A genetically isolated dingo population in western Victoria, Australia, reveals greater structuring of the Australian dingo
<p>The Australian dingo is a relatively recent anthropogenic addition to the Australian fauna, which spread rapidly across the continent and has since widely interbred with modern dogs. Genetic studies of dingoes have given rise to speculation about their entry to the continent and subsequent biogeographic effects, but few studies of their contemporary population structure have been conducted. Here we investigated the dingo ancestry and population structure of free-living dogs in western Victoria and contrasted it with a wider southern Australian sample. We wished to determine whether their geographic isolation was mirrored in genetic isolation. To address this question, we analysed genetic data using Bayesian clustering and discriminant analysis of principal components, and summarised genetic diversity at the population and individual levels. Upon finding low genetic diversity in western Victoria, we tested for a recent genetic bottleneck. The broader southern Australia sample (n=1,138) comprised mostly hybrid animals, with ~30% dingoes. All western Victorian individuals (n= 59) appeared to be hybrids with high dingo ancestry. The population showed no evidence of admixture with other populations and no recent bottleneck. Based upon our characterisation of this unusual mainland population, we sound caution for future studies assuming homogeneity of dingoes across the continent.</p>

Morphological data from: Strong species structure but weak geographical structure in demersal Lake Victoria cichlids
<p><span>Studying phenotypic and genetic differentiation between very young species can be very informative with regard to learning about processes of speciation. Identifying and characterizing genetic species structure and distinguishing it from spatial genetic structure within a species is a prerequisite for this and is often not given sufficient attention. Young radiations of cichlid fish are classical speciation study systems. However, it is only during the past decade that population genomics based on next-generation sequencing has begun to provide the power to resolve species and distinguish speciation from spatial population structure for the youngest of these radiations. The Lake Victoria haplochromine cichlids constitute the youngest large cichlid fish radiation, probably less than 20,000 years old. Earlier work showed that communities of rocky reef cichlids are composed of many reciprocally monophyletic species despite their very recent origins. Here, we build on this work by studying assemblages of offshore demersal cichlids, adding analyses of within-species spatial structure to the sympatric species structure. We sampled seven multispecies communities along a 6km-long transect from one side of the Mwanza Gulf to the other side. We investigated whether phenotypically diagnosed putative species are reciprocally monophyletic and whether such monophyly is stable across species geographic ranges. We show that all species are genetically strongly differentiated in sympatry, that they are reciprocally monophyletic and that monophyly is stable across distribution ranges. We found </span>significant differentiation between geographically distinct populations in two species, but no or weak isolation-by-distance. We further found subtle but significant morphological differences between all species and a linear relationship between genomic and morphological distance which suggests that differences in morphology begin to accumulate after speciation has already affected genome-wide restrictions of gene flow. </p>

Vessel traffic observations and associated waterbird surveys, March 2020 – February 2021, Roberts Point and Ogden Point, Victoria, BC, Canada
<p>The coastal waters of southern British Columbia, Canada, encompass habitat of international conservation significance to coastal and marine birds, including sizeable areas designated in the early 1900s as Migratory Bird Sanctuaries (MBS) to protect overwintering waterfowl from hunting near urban centres. Two of these, Shoal Harbour (SHMBS) and Victoria Harbour (VHMBS), have seen significant marine infrastructure development in recent decades and experience considerable vessel traffic. We conducted a pilot study using shore-based observers to develop small-vessel baselines for the winter months when regional waterbird numbers are highest. During our surveys, we recorded considerable inter-site variability in vessel traffic characteristics, with one site (SHMBS) a source of nearly twice as many vessels in total as the other (VHMBS). For waterbirds, hourly 3-minute 'snapshot' surveys, combined with daily tallies of incidental observations, showed that community composition also varied by locality, with one site dominated by gulls (Laridae), cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), and seaducks (Tribe Mergini), and the other by gulls, cormorants, and alcids (Alcidae). Our results demonstrate that fine-scale local variability must be taken into account when managing for vessel traffic disturbance of waterbirds, particularly at sites of high human population density and increasing coastal development. Streamflow data records for catchments in Victoria, Australia
<p>We provide here the observed monthly total streamflow (q) and precipitation (p) records at 161 unregulated catchments in Victoria, Australia. All observations are in units of millimeters per month. The number of missing days of streamflow per month is also provided as a measure of data quality (see “gap days”). </p> <p>This data is sourced from <a href="https://doi.org/10.1126/science.abd5085">Peterson et al. (2021)</a>, wherein the data is provided within the R package, <a href="https://github.com/peterson-tim-j/HydroState">HydroState</a>. Its original use was for investigating non-recovery of streamflow after droughts and catchment resilience.</p> <p>The precipitation data is the area-weighted catchment average depth and was derived using the R package, <a href="https://github.com/peterson-tim-j/AWAPer">AWAPer</a> (see <a href="https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/abs/10.1002/hyp.13637">Peterson et al., 2019</a>). The compilation of the streamflow data was led by Dr Margarita Saft and the observed data was sourced from <a href="https://data.water.vic.gov.au/">https://data.water.vic.gov.au/</a>. For additional details of the data see <a href="https://www.science.org/doi/suppl/10.1126/science.abd5085/suppl_file/abd5085_peterson_sm.pdf">Peterson et al. (2021) – Supplemental file</a>.</p> <p>Also provided here are the following GIS shapefiles of the study catchments: boundaries, stream gauge location, state boundary, major lakes and watercourse of Victoria. The spatial data files were derived from <a href="https://www.data.vic.gov.au/">https://www.data.vic.gov.au/</a>. The units of area and elevation therein are square meter and meter, respectively.</p> <p>The files here were used in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2021WR031508">Goswami et al. (2022)</a> and were uploaded to Zenodo to comply with the journal data availability requirements.</p> <p>Update: Temperature and PET datasets of the 161 catchments were added to support analysis carried out in a follow up paper, Goswami et al 2023.</p>
