Viewshed Analysis of the Pinakes from the Columns of the Heraion in Olympia

<p>This project aimed&nbsp;to conduct a 3D visibility analysis of the Pinakes at the Heraion of Olympia, using the open-source software Blender and QGIS. The project builds on previous work by other researchers on the pinakes at the site, and aims to use the 3D model to better understand the visibility of the pinakes from different viewpoints near the temple. The results were visualized using raster maps for the better understanding of the function of the Pinakes in the context of the Heraion.</p>

BiG RAPA Water Column HPLC Pigments from R/V Melville MV1015 in the South Pacific from Arica, Chile to Easter Island from November to December 2010 (C-MORE project)

<p>&ldquo;The South East Pacific (SEP) is characterized by very high nutrient concentrations in the waters adjacent to the Chilean coast, but very low nutrient concentrations (oligotrophic) in the mid- South Pacific Subtropical Gyre (SPSG), near Easter Island. The steep gradient in nutrient concentrations across the region affects the level of marine production, the composition of the microbial community, and the operation of major biogeochemical cycles in ways that are not fully understood. Despite the remarkable diversity of trophic conditions, strong gradients and even some unique singularities, the SEP is still the most sparsely sampled oceanic region of the global ocean from hydrodynamic, biological and biogeochemical points of view. The SPSG is also the most oligotrophic of all sub-tropical gyres. Previous expeditions and remote sensing studies have describes the nutrient and chlorophyll field, but there have been few simultaneous measurements of chemical properties with microbial community structure and function. This expedition is designed to investigate the impact of elemental nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, silicon, carbon) ratios on marine productivity and microbial community composition.&rdquo; This BiG RAPA dataset contains water column HPLC pigment data from samples collected via Niskin bottles attached to a CTD. Single column 1D radiative transfer simulations for a case study of multilayer mixed-phase cloud in Punta Arena Chile

<p>This data set&nbsp;contain the input files&nbsp;and output simulations from a single column 1D radiative transfer simulations using the&nbsp;<strong>R</strong>apid&nbsp;<strong>R</strong>adiative&nbsp;<strong>T</strong>ransfer&nbsp;<strong>M</strong>odel for&nbsp;<strong>G</strong>eneral Circulation Model (GCM) applications (RRTMG).&nbsp;The simulations are focused on a selected case study of multiple-layer mixed phase cloud observed in Punta Arenas Chile. The input parameters of the simulations are based on&nbsp;remote sensing observations, which were synergistically used with the Cloudnet and VOODOO algorithm to derive macro and microphysical properties of clouds. The atmospheric profiles of temperature, pressure, and ozone are from ERA5 (European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Re-Analysis) and values of surface albedo from CERES (Clouds and the Earth&#39;s Radiant Energy System) SYN1deg Ed. 4.1.</p>

Infectivity of the parasite Metschnikowia bicuspidata is decreased by time spent as a transmission spore, but exposure to phycotoxins in the water column has no effect

<p>Transmission from one host to another is a crucial component of parasite fitness. For some aquatic parasites, transmission occurs via a free-living stage that spends time in the water, awaiting an encounter with a new host. These parasite transmission stages can be impacted by biotic and abiotic factors that influence the parasite's ability to successfully infect or grow in a new host.</p> <p>Here we tested whether time spent in the water column and/or exposure to common cyanobacterial toxins impacted parasite transmission stages. More specifically, we tested whether the infectivity, within-host growth, and virulence of the fungal parasite <em>Metschnikowia bicuspidata </em>changed as a result of time spent in the water or from exposure to cyanotoxins in the water column. We exposed parasite transmission spores to different levels of one of two ecologically important cyanotoxins, microcystin-LR and anatoxin-a, and factorially manipulated the amount of time spores were incubated in water. We removed the toxins and used those same spores to infect one genotype of the common lake zooplankton <em>Daphnia dentifera</em>.</p> <p>We found that cyanotoxins did not impact parasite fitness (infection prevalence and spore yield per infected host) or virulence (host lifetime reproduction and survivorship) at the tested concentrations (10μg/L &amp; 30μg/L). However, we found that spending longer as a transmission spore decreased a spore's chances for successful infection: spores that were only incubated for 24 hours infected approximately 75% of exposed hosts, whereas spores incubated for 10 days infected less than 50% of exposed hosts.</p> <p>We also found a negative relationship between the final spore yield from infected hosts and the proportion of hosts that became infected. In treatments where spores spent longer in the water column prior to encountering a host, infection prevalence was lower (indicating lower per spore infectivity), but each infected host yielded more spores at the end of infection. We hypothesize that this pattern may result from intraspecific parasite competition within the host.</p> <p>Overall, these results suggest that transmission spores of this parasite are not strongly influenced by cyanotoxins in the water column, but that other aspects of spending time in the water strongly influence parasite fitness.</p>

Comparison between ozone column depths and methane lifetimes computed by 1-D and 3-D models at different atmospheric O2 Levels

<p>Recently, Cooke et al. (2022) used a 3-D coupled chemistry-climate model (WACCM6) to calculate ozone column depths at varied atmospheric O<sub>2</sub> levels. They argued that previous 1-D photochemical model studies, e.g., Segura et al. (2003), may have overestimated the ozone column depth at low pO<sub>2</sub>, and hence also overestimated the lifetime of methane. We have compared new simulations from an updated version of the Segura et al. model with those from WACCM6, together with some results from another 1-D and 3-D model. The discrepancy in ozone column depths is likely due to multiple interacting parameters, including lower boundary conditions, vertical and meridional transport rates, and different chemical mechanisms, especially the treatment of O<sub>2</sub> photolysis in the Schumann-Runge (SR) bands (175-205 nm). The discrepancy in tropospheric OH concentrations and methane lifetime between WACCM6 and the 1-D model at low pO<sub>2</sub> is reduced when absorption from CO<sub>2</sub> and H<sub>2</sub>O in this wavelength region is included in WACCM6. Including scattering in the SR bands may further reduce this difference. Resolving these issues can be accomplished by developing an accurate parameterization for O<sub>2</sub> photolysis in the SR bands and then repeating these calculations in the various models. Work is already underway to this end.</p>

Column size for direct displacement based design of base-isolated RC frame buildings

<p>In this paper, a method of computer-added program-based algorithm is introduced to evaluate the possible floor-wise column size for direct displacement-based design of base-isolated reinforced concrete frame buildings. The design storey drifts are kept low as base isolated buildings are mostly intended to achieve low storey drift fully-operational performance level under spectrum-compatible ground motions. Lead rubber bearing is used as base isolator and designed according to the UBC-97 maximum vertical load method. The frame deformation components considered in the algorithm are column tip displacement due to flexure, average column displacement due to shear, and joint rotation due to flexure and shear. It was observed that the proposed method effectively determines the storey-wise column size for various building plans, heights upto 9-storey and base displacement upto 350mm for target storey drift upto 0.25%.</p>

Keppel's Column (showing the wider setting)

3D model of Keppel's Column, Rotherham (UK). The column was completed in 1780, and commemorates the honourable acquittal of Admiral Keppel following his court-martial, after failing to engage the French off Brest in 1778. It stands on a prominent hill to the south of the Wentworth Estate, and at 35 metres high is the tallest of the four Wentworth follies. The monument is now in a dangerous condition and is kept locked.
