Environmental Education During the COVID-19 Pandemic Dataset

Data files that support the capstone thesis Environmental Education during the COVID-19 Pandemic by Margaret Janz.

The COVID-19 pandemic that hit the United States in March 2020 quickly caused the entire nation to rethink how we work and how we approach education. Informal environmental education in particular faced unique challenges during this time yet found ways to adapt their educational programming. This thesis will explore the questions: How did organizations alter and adapt their programming to meet public health guidelines during the pandemic? and What successes and challenges did organizations face in offering these programs? To answer these questions, a survey was distributed to organizations that offer environmental education programs. Results echo and expand on the existing literature on pandemic education. Organizations offered many virtual programs both synchronously and asynchronously and also found new ways to offer in person events. Programs that involved some interaction with other people and those that took place in person or outdoors were most successful, while asynchronous virtual materials were considered less so. Organizations faced many challenges in offering programming including financial barriers, technology troubles, and difficulty staying current on public health recommendations. Despite the difficulties and learning losses, respondents felt there may have been some benefits to the changes in their programming and many will continue to offer their adapted programs in the future.

DIALLS Dataset of evaluations of Open Educational Resources – The Cultural Literacy Learning Programme resources

This dataset was used to support the development of the DIALLS project’s (Dialogue and Argumentation for cultural Literacy Learning in Schools, www.dialls2020.eu/) teaching and learning materials as open access online educational resources (OER). It consists of quantitative data (i) evaluating the three OER (i.e., professional development (PD) materials, lesson plans (LP), Scale of Progression for Cultural Literacy Learning (SPCLL)) and (ii) assessing the discussion forum as a platform for building a DIALLS community of practice. N = 140 teachers from Germany, UK, Portugal, and Israel participated in the surveys over the course of six months (September 2020 to February 2021).

For each country, there are four datasets from the surveys. For data collection, the surveys have been translated into the partner countries’ language, open feedback is translated from the respective languages and now in English (i.e., Translation from German, English, Portuguese, Hebrew).

Based on Kirkpatrick and Kirkpatrick’s (2006) evaluation model and the Value Creation Framework (VCF) (Wenger et al., 2011), the surveys have been developed and the discussion forum designed. From this, items regarding the materials’ application, content, design, and value were included in the assessment of the quality of PD materials, lesson plans, and SPCLL. The quality of the discussion forum was assessed regarding its motivation, participation, topic, and value.

Considering the context, the dataset is relevant to the following areas of research: Communities of Practice, OER, Teachers’ professional development.

The dataset is organised in 1 file (merged quantitative data from all four surveys and all four partners). A detailed description of the dataset can be accessed in a PDF file. Further, the provided codebook in the "variable view window" in SPSS explains the variables and values.

A QUASI-EXPERIMENTAL STUDY TO IMPROVE DIABETIC CONTROL FOR THE UNDERSERVED POPULATION THROUGH EDUCATION AND SCREENINGS

Diabetes is a growing epidemic in the underserved population. Type 2 diabetes is one of the largest health concerns affecting Americans. Over 37 million Americans are diagnosed with diabetes and over 7 million are undiagnosed. One out of three Americans have prediabetes, but only 12% are aware of this condition.1 Diabetes can lead to serious health conditions including cardiac, renal, retinal and vascular conditions. A step towards controlling diabetes is performing an HbA1C test, but many people are not adequately screened or educated on the risk of diabetes. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) recognizes a HbA1c as an evidence-based tool used in monitoring diabetes and diabetic determination.

More than 28 million Americans are considered underserved with approximately 9% of Americans are classified as diabetics.1 Only 68% of this population are considered compliant with their diabetic treatment.9 The lack of diabetic control is caused by the inability to seek healthcare and a lack of diabetic supplies, screenings and treatment.7 The ADA determined that the underserved population suffering with diabetes is impacted 48 times more than any other population.

COVID-19 Impact on European Higher Education Survey Data

This dataset consists of the results of the first European-Union-wide survey on the potential long-term impacts of COVID-19 on higher education (Huth, M. & Cominola, A., 2022 forthcoming), evaluating over 800 responses from students and faculty members of higher education institutions located in 17 different European countries. The data consists of variables related to the actual pre-pandemic, pandemic and intended future frequency of use of various educational tools and formats, as well as students and faculty members' attitude toward retaining digital teaching formats and media post-pandemic. The data is shared in SPSS file format (.sav) and as a .CSV file. A detailed item bank label overview is attached in excel format. The attitude related items consists of Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) construct variables following items used by Rizun et al. (2021) and Vladova et al. (2021). Following guidelines (Hair et al. 2019; Henseler, Ringle, and Sarstedt 2015) to establish discriminant validity before analysing the TAM variables in a structural equation model, the objective had to be disregarded. The data might still yield interesting descriptive insights nonetheless, which is why they are published here along with the variables used in the forthcoming publication by Huth and Cominola (2022).

Framework for virtual education of COVID-19 vaccines for Mandarin-speaking learners: An educational intervention module

Background: In the United States, patients with limited English proficiency face significant barriers to comprehending and acting upon health-related information, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The ability of health professionals to communicate COVID-19-related information to Mandarin-speaking patients has proved critical in discussions about vaccine efficacy, side effects, and post-vaccine protection.

Methods: The authors created a one-hour educational module to help Mandarin-speaking medical students better convey COVID-19 vaccine information to Mandarin-only speakers. The module is composed of an educational guide, which introduced key terminology and addressed commonly asked questions, and pre- and post-surveys. The authors recruited 59 Mandarin-speaking medical students from 31 U.S. academic medical centers, all of whom had previously completed a medical Mandarin elective. The module and surveys were distributed and completed in August 2021. Data analysis measured the change in aggregate mean for subjective five-point Likert-scale questions and change in percent accuracy for objective knowledge-based questions.

Results: The educational module significantly improved participants' subjective comfort level in discussing the COVID-19 vaccine in English and Mandarin. The largest improvement in both English and Mandarin was demonstrated in the participant's ability to explain differences between the COVID-19 vaccines, with an aggregate mean improvement of 0.39 for English and 1.48 for Mandarin. Survey respondents also demonstrated increased percent accuracy in knowledge-based objective questions in Mandarin.

Conclusions: This module provides Mandarin-learning medical students with skills to deliver reliable information to the general population and acts as a model for the continued development of educational modules for multilingual medical professionals.

Post COVID-19 trends in simulation use within diagnostic radiography and radiation therapy education.

The authors developed and deployed an online survey among diagnostic radiography and/or radiation therapy educators with experience in pre-registration training (academic, clinical or combined). The aim of this study was to capture global trends and activity on simulation-based education (SBE) in medical imaging and radiation therapy education. Simulation is a well-established component of medical radiation science training that embraces a wide range of activities and resources all aiming to provide a safe environment in which to practice clinical skills. The survey instrument design was informed by a prior review of the literature, a previous international survey conducted by members of the research team1 and experience within the research team. It comprised two open and 27 closed questions designed to ascertain data across four domains: type of training environment of the respondent (n=13), access to and use of simulation within the participants’ institution (n=13) and possible future trends in simulation (n=3). Data captured in this study was compared with similar data from Bridge and colleagues previous survey in 2020.1 There is an opportunity for this dataset to add to the evidence base on the evolving landscape of the use of SBE in radiography/radiation therapy education. Such information has the potential to inform future practices and to create best-practice standards in the adoption of simulation-based educational resources and activities in diagnostic radiography and radiation therapy.

Reference:

Bridge P, Shiner N, Bolderston A, et al.
