Variable Geometry Turbines Industrialization for a Circular Economy of Distributed Wind Energy
<p>In this work we present a novel VAWT with passive variable geometry (PVG), which combines variable radius and variable pitch of the free blades. The turbine was optimized through extensive numerical simulations, with a final design featuring short start-up time, high steady-state efficiency, low construction complexity, and low material costs. A crucial reduction of nearly 50% in the blades' mass was obtained through the use of compression moulded composites. A full-scale physical prototype was tested in a dedicated wind tunnel facility, where the typical intermittent air flow of the UBL was replicated. The turbine was connected to standard power electronics found in the solar photovoltaic market. The measured electrical power output closely matches the numerical simulations, suggesting that our PVG design can achieve a 64% increase in the capacity factor compared to a fixed-geometry turbine. Thanks to this engineering breakthrough we believe that, for the first time, wind installations in the UBL can be competitive on the energy market. We conclude our contribution by discussing industrialization and sustainability aspects of our PVG-VAWT technology, and by projecting a deployment scenario towards the uptake of a distributed urban wind market.</p>

Industrial legacies in a rapidly changing Arctic
<p><strong>The file <em>Industrial_Legacies_Data.zip</em> contains the database and source codes used to investigate the impact of permafrost thaw on industrial legacies in the Arctic:</strong></p> <ul> <li>The "Data" folder contains several subfolders that are named by the figures in the paper "Thawing permafrost poses environmental threat to thousands of sites with legacy industrial contamination". In each of these folders all data files are provided to reproduce the underlying analysis and the figure itself.</li> <li>Furthermore the "Geospatial_DataCollection" folder contains the complete database used to analyze and visualize the occurences of industrial contamination in the Arctic.</li> <li>The "Scripts" folder contains several scripts that are again named by the figures in the paper. These scripts can be used to reproduce the analysis and to create the figures in the folder "Figures" and "Supplementary_Figures". Furthermore there are two scripts ("PermanentTalikYearAnalysis.py" and "TalikYearToShapefile.py") that were used to analyze the spatio-temporal talik development in the model domain.</li> </ul> <p><strong>The file <em>PanArctic_Simulations.zip</em> includes the source code of the CryoGrid permafrost model (Julia Language v. 0.6.4) and a start script with all parameters and forcing data (JSON) required to run the model for industrial sites located in the Arctic permafrost region.</strong></p> <p>Software:</p> <p>The Julia Language v.0.6.4 was used to run the simulations with the one-dimensional, transient permafrost model CryoGridLite. Furthermore, we used Python 3.7.4 for most of the data analysis and visualization.<br> The point process modelling used to relate industrial and contaminated sites and to create intensity maps of contaminated sites in the Arctic permafrost region is based on R version 3.6.3.</p>
Market interview data with industrial players
<p>The data is collected based on the designed interview guide with industry stakeholders such as professional buyers. The interviews are conducted in collaboration with the project partners in Spain, Brazil, and partly in South-Africa and the USA. The data will be analyzed for the four different countries representing the four zones of the Atlantic Ocean: 1) Brazil, 2) South Africa, 3) Spain 4) USA. The data will be analyzed for the professional buyers’ awareness and (interest for) trade of low trophic species and sustainable products.</p>

Industry funding of patient organisations in the United Kingdom: A retrospective study of commercial determinants, funding concentration and disease prevalence
<p><strong>Objectives</strong> – To assess the relationship between UK-based patient organisation funding and companies' commercial interests in rare and non-rare diseases in 2020.</p> <p><strong>Design</strong> – Retrospective analysis of the value and volume of payments from pharmaceutical companies to patient organisations in the UK matched with data on the conditions supported by patient organisations and drugs in companies' approved portfolios and research and development pipelines.</p> <p><strong>Setting</strong> – UK.</p> <p><strong>Participants</strong> – 74 pharmaceutical companies making payments to 341 UK-based patient organisations.</p> <p><strong>Main outcome measures</strong> – Alignment between the commercial interests of pharmaceutical companies and the disease area focus of patient organisations; difference in the volume and value of payments to patient organisations broken down by prevalence of conditions; industry funding concentration, measured as the number of companies funding each patient organisations, the share of overall industry funding coming from each contributing company and the share of industry funding of each organisation comprised by the single highest payments.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong> – 1,422 payments were made by 74 companies to 341 patient organisations. Almost all funds (90%) from pharmaceutical companies were directed to patient organisations that are aligned with companies' approved drug portfolios and research and development pipelines. Despite rare diseases affecting less than 5% of the UK population, more than 20% of all payments were directed to patient organisations which target such conditions. Patient organisations focusing on rare diseases relied on payments from fewer companies (p-value = 0.0031) compared to organisations focusing on non-rare diseases.</p> <p><strong>Conclusions</strong> – Companies predominantly funded patient organisations operating in therapeutic areas relevant to companies' portfolio or drug development pipeline. Patient organisations focusing on rare diseases received more funding relative to the number of patients affected by these conditions and relied more heavily on payments from fewer companies compared to organisations targeting non-rare diseases. Increased independence of patient organisations could help avoiding conflicts of interest.</p>
Data and code info for: Reducing single-use cutlery with green nudges: Evidence from China's food delivery industry
<p>The rising consumer demand for online food delivery has significantly increased the consumption of disposable cutlery, leading to much greater plastic pollution worldwide. This study investigates the impact of green nudges on single-use cutlery consumption in China. Collaborating with Alibaba's food delivery platform Eleme (similar to Uber Eats and DoorDash), we analyzed detailed customer-level data and found that the green nudges — changing the default to "No Cutlery" and rewarding consumers with "green points" — increased the share of "No Cutlery" orders by 648%. The aggregate environmental benefits are significant: if the green nudges were applied to all of China, more than 21.75 billion sets of single-use cutlery could be saved every year, equivalent to a 20.4% of plastic waste reduction in the food delivery industry or a 6.12% reduction in China's total municipal plastic waste.</p>

Distribution of heavy metals in coastal sediments under the influence of multiple factors: A case study from the south coast of an industrialized harbor city (Tangshan, China)
<p><span>This research investigated the spatial distribution of heavy metals, including mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), arsenic (As), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and zinc (Zn), in surface sediments from the coastal area near to an industrial harbor (the Tangshan Harbor, China) with 161 sediment samples. The results showed that the distribution patterns of Cr, Cu, Zn, Ni, and Pb were similar to each other, high in the northwest, southeast, and southwest regions of the study area and low in the northeast region, which corresponded well with components of sedimental sizes. The uncontaminated specimen proportions for Hg, Cd, Cu, As, Ni, Pb, Cr, and Zn were 6.8%, 4.3%, 31.1%, 28.6%, 42.9%, 64.6%, 44.7%, and 50.3%, respectively. Based on principal component analysis (PCA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF), four distinct sources of pollution were quantitatively attributed, including agricultural activities (22.08%), fossil fuel consumption (24.14%), steel production (29.78%), and natural sources (24.00%). Hg (80.29%), Cd (82.31%) and As (65.33%) in the region's coastal sediments were predominantly contributed by fossil fuel, steel production and agricultural</span> <span>sources, respectively. Cr (40.00%), Cu (43.63%), Ni (47.54%), and Zn (38.98%) were primarily of natural lithogenic origin, while Pb mainly came from the mixed sources of agricultural activities (36.63%), fossil fuel (36.86%), and steel production (34.35%). Multiple factors played important roles in the selective transportation of sedimentary heavy metals, especially sediment properties, and hydrodynamic sorting processes in the study area.</span></p>
Data from "Unraveling Cross-Border Climate Risks through Climate Storylines:An example from Europe's Cocoa Industry"
<p>The following files were used in the analysis in the article "Unraveling Cross-Border Climate Risks through Climate Storylines: An example from Europe's Cocoa Industry." The traditional assessment of climate change's impact on agriculture, confined by geographical borders, is insufficient due to global trade, allowing climate risks to affect multiple nations. This study uses cacao as an example to highlight cross-border climate risks, showing their implications for the EU's chocolate industry. Concentrating on cacao supply from Ivory Coast and Ghana, the study models various warming scenarios, revealing reduced cacao yields in both countries. Under RCP2.6, Ivory Coast could lose around 7% of cacao production by 2050, rising to 23% at RCP8.5. Ghana might experience losses of 39% by 2050, with a potential extreme loss of 86%. A no-deforestation import policy further affects production, reducing about 24% in the Ivory Coast and 16% in Ghana. These losses possibly cause EU supplies to decrease by 8% by 2050 in the long term and up to 20% in an extreme year. Predicted cacao price hikes of 30% by 2050 will cost the EU 2.5 billion euros annually by 2050. Extreme drought might elevate prices by 115% (RCP8.5), resulting in an additional annual expense of 10 billion euros for the EU. Findings indicate importance of addressing cross-border dimension in climate risk studies. These risks intensify with higher warming degrees, compounded by concentrated crop production, making countries dependent on these commodities highly susceptible to simultaneous, multi-location crop failures. Presently, EU trade agreements lack provisions for such scenarios. Given the increased likelihood of such shocks under a warming climate, more significant investment into disaster management strategies and policies is advisable.</p>
