CYGNSS Level 3 Storm Centric Grid Science Data Record Version 1.0

This dataset contains the Version 1.0 Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) Level 3 Storm Centric Grid (SCG) Science Data Record (SDR) which provides the average wind speed combined from aggregated wind speed measurements made by the entire CYGNSS constellation whose specular points are located near a storm of interest in latitude, longitude and time. Data are provided on both a 0.1x0.1 degree latitude by longitude equirectangular grid and storm centric coordinates obtained from the Delay Doppler Mapping Instrument (DDMI) aboard the CYGNSS satellite constellation. Storm centric coordinates are derived from the National Hurricane Center (NHC) Best Track dataset to produce a 6 hourly wind speed averaging window. A single netCDF-4 data file is produced for each storm. Each storm is uniquely identified by the year, storm basin, and a storm number. This dataset is intended for historical storm analysis, and as such, this dataset is periodically updated based on the availability of the NHC Best Track storm center information that is typically made available in April for the previous year's hurricane season. SCG files are produced for named storms, as defined by the NHC, that reach hurricane strength (i.e., having a maximum sustained wind speed of at least 65 knots). Due to the dependency on NHC Best Track data, the SCG files produced in this dataset are confined to storms in the Northern Hemisphere within the North Atlantic and East Pacific ocean regions. Wind speed inputs are provided by the CYGNSS Level 2 SDR Version 3.0 (https://doi.org/10.5067/CYGNS-L2X30 ).

Simulated Changes in Storm Morphology Associated with a Sea-Breeze Airmass

<p>This dataset contains all of the necessary namelists, input_sounding files (initial conditions) and code modifications to run the simulations that are presented in the paper&nbsp;Simulated Changes in Storm Morphology Associated with a Sea-Breeze Airmass.&nbsp;</p> <p>Below is the abstract for this paper:</p> <p>The central east coast of Australia is frequently impacted by large hail and damaging winds associated with severe convective storms, with individual events recording damages exceeding AU$1 billion. These storms present a significant challenge for forecasting due to their development in seemingly marginal environments. They have often been observed to intensify upon approaching the coast, with case studies and climatological analysis indicating that interactions with the sea breeze are key to this process. The relative importance of the additional lifting and vorticity along the sea-breeze front compared to the change to a cooler, moister airmass with stronger low-level shear behind the front has yet to be investigated. Here, the role of the sea-breeze airmass is isolated using idealized numerical simulations of storms developing in a horizontally homogeneous environment. The base-state substitution (BSS) modeling technique is utilized to introduce the sea-breeze airmass following initial storm development. Compared to a simulation without BSS, the storm is longer lived and more intense, ultimately developing into a supercell. Separately simulating the changes in the thermodynamic and wind fields reveals that the enhanced storm longevity and intensity are primarily due to the latter. The change in the low-level environmental winds slows gust front propagation allowing the storm to continue to ingest warm, potentially buoyant environmental air. At the same time, increased low-level shear promotes the development of persistent updraft rotation causing the storm to transition from a multicell to a supercell.</p>

Storms and the Depletion of Ammonia in Jupiter: I. Microphysics of Mushballs

<p>This is the supporting data for the article of the same name in JGR Planets</p> <p>Microwave observations by the Juno spacecraft have shown that, contrary to expectations, the concentration of ammonia is still variable down to pressures of tens of bars in Jupiter. We show that during strong storms able to loft water ice into a region located at pressures between 1.1 and 1.5 bar and temperatures between 173K and 188K, ammonia vapor can dissolve into water ice to form a low-temperature liquid phase containing about 1/3 ammonia and 2/3 water. We estimate that, following the process creating hailstorms on Earth, this liquid phase enhances the growth of hail-like particles that we call &lsquo;mushballs&rsquo;. We develop a simple model to estimate the growth of these mushballs, their fall into Jupiter&#39;s deep atmosphere and their evaporation. We show that they evaporate deeper than the expected water cloud base level, between 5&nbsp;and 27&nbsp;bar depending on the assumed abundance of water ice lofted by thunderstorms and on the assumed ventilation coefficient governing heat transport between the atmosphere and the mushball. Because the ammonia is located mostly in the core of the mushballs, it tends to be delivered deeper than water, increasing the efficiency of the process. Further sinking of the condensates is expected due to cold temperature and ammonia- and water-rich downdrafts formed by the evaporation of mushballs. This process can thus potentially account for the measurements of ammonia depletion in Jupiter&#39;s deep atmosphere.</p> <p>Notes on zip archive:</p> <p>The subdirectories correspond to the figures in the article.&nbsp;</p>

A storm of relevant project-related terms to support newcomers' onboarding

<p>Both distributed and collocated software teams use collaborative communication channels, such as instant messaging (IM) tools, to support software development and management tasks. Furthermore, when teams use IM tools, relevant software-related discussions end up stored in these tools&#39; log files. This research aims to investigate how we can extract and use projects&#39; knowledge from developers&#39; IM logs to support newcomers&#39; onboarding. We propose an approach based on data-mining techniques to automatically obtain frequent software-related discussions from the developer&#39;s IM logs, extracting what we call the Project&#39;s Frequent Knowledge (PFK). We assessed the proposed approach evaluating three newcomers&#39; knowledge acquisition regarding a software project. The results demonstrated that, on average, 70% of the frequent software-related discussions identified in this study were useful to determine the PFK, and newcomers were able to comprehend software related issues by analyzing the PFK. Our findings indicate the usefulness of the proposed approach to extract software knowledge from developers&#39; IM logs and support newcomers&#39; onboarding. Moreover, a conducted follow-up interview involving newcomers and the team&#39;s project manager revealed the feasibility of using PFK on knowledge transfer and acquisition.</p>
