Photosynthetic data on experimentally warmed tree species in northern Minnesota, 2009-2011, used in the paper Reich et al Nature 2018.
To test how climate warming and variation in soil moisture supply will jointly influence photosynthesis of southern boreal forest tree species we measured gas exchange rates of 11 species in an open-air warming experiment at two sites in northern Minnesota, USA. The experiment ran for three years and used juveniles of 11 temperate and boreal tree species under ambient and seasonally warmed (+3.4 degC above- and belowground) conditions. We measured in situ light-saturated net photosynthesis (Anet) and leaf diffusive conductance (gs) on numerous days across the three growing seasons. Soil and plant temperatures and soil moisture were continuously measured from sensor arrays.

During the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s, Costa Rica’s old growth forests were being cut to clear land for cattle pastures and large-scale agriculture. Timber concessions were also growing pine, gmelina, and other non-native trees for harvesting. The Costa Rican government was developing plans for a reforestation program and for a Payment for Environmental Services program to combat forest loss. At this time there were no data available on the growth of native trees species. The TRIALS project (starting with the CANADA Plot) was designed by OTS (Organization for Tropical Studies) and the DGF (Dirección General Forestal) to measure the growth and survival of native tree seedlings planted on abandoned pasture lands at the La Selva Biological Station. Data from these seedlings formed the basis of the reforestation law and the Payments of Ecosystem Services (PES) plan and this model was replicated in many other areas of Costa Rica.

Aboveground component weights (weight and dry) for the major tree species found in interior Alaska
Calculation of forest biomass requires the use of equations that relate the mass of a tree or its components to physical measurements that are relatively easy to obtain. Presented is the available data for various tree components (foliage, bark, stemwood, etc) of the five major tree species of interior Alaska. The tree components sampled and the number of sampled trees by species varied between the studies presented. Information collected by a number of researchers from a number of studies preformed from 1972 to 2004 are combined into one dataset.

Tree regeneration after fire: Delta 1994 burn surveys, live seedling counts, by species
Data for this study were collected in 2001 and 2002 by Jill Johnstone (University of Alaska Fairbanks) and Eric Kasischke (University of Maryland). Sites were located within the perimeter of the 1994 burn southeast of Delta Junction Alaska, USA, bordering the Alaska Highway to the North and the Gerstle River to the West. Sites were selected from satellite classifications prepared by Eric Kasischke to represent different levels of burn severity and post-fire vegetation canopy greenness (NDVI). Site selection was constrained by road access, and only areas where all trees had been killed by the fire were selected. At each site, a central point was located in an area of visually homogeneous vegetation. Five parallel transects, each 50 m long, were laid out as follows: 1) the first transect started at the central point and followed a randomly-selected compass direction, 2) two additional transects were established parallel to the first, but at a random distance from the central transect up to 25 m distant. Vegetation was sampled in a 2-m wide belt centered on each transect, and soil samples were made at intervals along the transect line. Vegetation measurements included: a) basal diameters of all pre-fire trees greater than 1.3 m in height, b) counts of all post-fire tree seedlings, and c) basal diameters of tree seedlings and willows, measured in a randomly chosen 5x2 m portion of each transect. General notes were made on visual percent cover of different vegetation growth forms at the site. Destructive measurements of tree seedlings and willows made in 2001 were used to develop allometric equations to predict dry biomass from basal diameter. Measurements of soil organic layer depth were made at 5 m intervals with the use of a spade to excavate small chunks of sod. Input data for the analysis of changes in functional structures of Japanese tree species by species loss simulation
<p>The dataset was used in Kusumoto, Shiono & Kubota (2020). It includes functional structure indices (community means, functional richness, and Rao's quadratic entropy) for 514 Japanese timber and non-timber tree species at 10-km grid cell level. The community means were based on specific leaf area and leaf nitrogen content, respectively. Functional richness and Rao's Q were based on wood density and tree height. There functional metrics were calculated for the observed species assemblages and simulated assemblages at 10-km grid cell level. The simulated assemblages were computed by removing species in each grid cell at 5 levels of species loss (10%, 20%, 30%, 40% and 50%) with two scenarios: random loss and ordered loss depending on species successional niche score (i.e. later successinal species are preferentially lost).
