HEartS Professional Survey: Charting the effects of COVID-19 on working patterns, income, and well-being among arts professionals in China (October 2020, August 2021)

These data were collected using the HEartS Professional China survey from performing arts workers in China in October 2020 and August 2021. HEartS Professional China is an adaptation of the HEartS Professional surveys which were used in 2020-2021. All the surveys were designed as multi-strategy data collection tools with two main purposes: (1) to chart working patterns, income, sources of support, and indicators of mental and social well-being to identify trends in the effects of the lockdown at the time and (2) to explore the individual work and wellbeing experiences of performing arts professionals in their own words, to identify the subjective effects of lockdown in terms of challenges and opportunities. The survey covers six areas: 1) demographics; (2) information on illness or self-isolation related to COVID-19; (3) work profiles and income; (4) changes to work profiles and income as a result of the pandemic, as well as sources of support; (5) open-response questions about work and wellbeing experiences of lockdown including challenges and opportunities; and (6) validated measures of health, wellbeing, and social connectedness. The HEartS Professional surveys are adaptations of the HEartS Survey which charts the Health, Economic, and Social impacts of the ARTs (https://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.3r2280gdj).

Using machine learning to distinguish between authentic and imitation Jackson Pollock poured paintings: Art images

Jackson Pollock's abstract poured paintings are celebrated for their striking aesthetic qualities. They are also among the most financially valued and imitated artworks, making them vulnerable to high-profile controversies involving Pollock-like paintings of unknown origin. Given the increased employment of artificial intelligence applications across society, we investigate whether established machine learning techniques can be adopted by the art world to help detect imitation Pollocks. The low number of images compared to typical artificial intelligence projects presents a potential limitation for art-related applications. To address this limitation, we develop a machine learning strategy involving a novel image ingestion method which decomposes the images into sets of multi-scaled tiles. Leveraging the power of transfer learning, this approach distinguishes between authentic and imitation poured artworks with an accuracy of 98.9%. The machine also uses the multi-scaled tiles to generate novel visual aids and interpretational parameters which together facilitate comparisons between the machine's results and traditional investigations of Pollock's artistic style.

Comparison of State-of-the-Art Reactive Auto-Scaler in 3 Different Environments

We investigate the hypothesis "The scaling behavior of a standard, reactive, CPU utilization-rule-based auto-scaler depends on the environment". Hence, we implement such an auto-scaler for scaling a CPU-intensive application as a benchmark in three different environments: (i) a private Cloud, (ii) AWS EC2 and (iii) IaaS cloud of the Distributed ASCI Supercomputer 4 (DAS-4).

Indian Art Music Tonic Datasets

Introduction

These datasets comprise audio excerpts and manually done annotations of the tonic pitch of the lead artist for each audio excerpt. Each excerpt is accompanied by its associated editorial metadata. These datasets can be used to develop and evaluate computational approaches for automatic tonic identification in Indian art music. These datasets have been used in several articles mentioned below. A majority of these datasets come from the CompMusic corpora of Indian art music, for which each recording is associated with a MBID. With the MBID other information can be obtained using the Dunya API. We here provide an overview of the tonic identification datasets.

Datasets

The statistics about the datasets for tonic identification is listed in the table below. These six datasets are used in [1] for a comparative evaluation. To the best of our knowledge these are the largest datasets available for tonic identification for Indian art music. These datases vary in terms of the audio quality, recording period (decade), the number of recordings for Carnatic, Hindustani, male and female singers and instrumental and vocal excerpts. For a detailed information about these datasets we refer to Chapter 3 of this thesis.

All the datasets (annotations) are version controlled. To know how the features are extracted visit the companion page for the publication.

The audio files corresponding to these datsets are made available on request for only research purposes. To obtain the files, please refer to this Zenodo entry.

Annotation Format

The tonic annotations are availabe both in tsv and json format.

TSV: <relative path to audio><tab><tonic(Hz)><tab><Carnatic or Hindustani><tab><artist_name><tab><gender of the singer><vocal or instrumental>

JSON: {
       'artist': <name of the lead artist if available>,

       'filepath': <relative path to the audio file>,

        'gender': <gender of the lead singer if available>,

        'mbid': <musicbrainz id when available>,

        'tonic': <tonic in Hz>,

        'tradition': <Hindustani or Carnatic>,

        'type': <vocal or instrumental>
     }

where keys of the main dictionary are the filepaths to the audio files (feature path is exactly the same with a different extension of the file name).

Using this dataset

If you use this dataset in a publication, please cite:

Gulati, S., Bellur, A., Salamon, J., Ranjani, H.
