The Choice is Yours? How Algorithm Bias Impacts Fairness and Accessibility of Knowledge

Episode Summary

In this episode we talked about 'almighty' algorithms with Carlos Castillo, Lorenzo Porcaro, Marzieh Karimihaghighi, David Solans, and Francesco Fabbri from the Web Science & Social Computing Research Group, and the department of Engineering in Information & Communication Technologies, in Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. We discussed how bias can enter into algorithm systems, how bias is measured, and what systems are impacted by it.

Episode Links

Web Science and Social Computing Research Group

Carlos Castillo

Marzieh Karimihaghighi

David Solans

Francesco Fabbri

Lorenzo Porcaro

Engaging the Business and Tourism Industry in Visualizing Sea Level Rise Impacts to Transportation Infrastructure in Waikiki, Hawaii

Transportation planners in coastal communities plan for future hazards and risks of sea-level rise (SLR), and often, they communicate risk in public meetings via PowerPoint presentations with charts as well as two-dimensional (2D) maps that visualize information using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies. The project investigates the use of immersive technology to communicate SLR risk, including the development of an immersive three-dimensional (3D) model of the Waikiki neighborhood of Honolulu, Hawaii. According to the project’s original methodology, participants would have experienced the model using virtual reality (VR). However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team pivoted to creating and implementing an internet-based survey instrument with embedded 2D charts and video of the animated 3D model. The flooding projections were derived from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data. NOAA supplies the SLR Viewer, a screening-level tool that uses the best-available national projections to map areas vulnerable to current and future flood risks.

Data from: Differential impact of severe drought on infant mortality in two sympatric neotropical primates

Extreme climate events can have important consequences for the dynamics of natural populations, and severe droughts are predicted to become more common and intense due to climate change. We analysed infant mortality in relation to drought in two primate species (white-faced capuchins, Cebus capucinus imitator, and Geoffroy's spider monkeys, Ateles geoffroyi) in a tropical dry forest in north-western Costa Rica. Our survival analyses combine several rare and valuable long-term data sets, including long-term primate life-history, landscape-scale fruit abundance, food-tree mortality, and climate conditions. Infant capuchins showed a threshold mortality response to drought, with exceptionally high mortality during a period of intense drought, but not during periods of moderate water shortage. In contrast, spider monkey females stopped reproducing during severe drought, and the mortality of infant spider monkeys peaked later during a period of low fruit abundance and high food-tree mortality linked to the drought. These divergent patterns implicate differing physiology, behaviour, or associated factors in shaping species-specific drought responses. Our findings link predictions about the Earth's changing climate to environmental influences on primate mortality risk and thereby improve our understanding of how the increasing severity and frequency of droughts will affect the dynamics and conservation of wild primates.

In vitro Evaluation of Biofield Treatment on Enterobacter cloacae: Impact on Antimicrobial Susceptibility and Biotype

This research work investigated the influence of biofield treatment on Enterobacter cloacae (ATCC 13047) against antimicrobial susceptibility. Two sets of ATCC samples were taken in this experiment and denoted as A and B. ATCC A sample was revived and divided into two parts Gr. I (control) and Gr. II (revived); likewise, ATCC B was labeled as Gr. III (lyophilized). Group II and III were given with biofield treatment. The control and treatment groups of E. cloacae cells were tested with respect to antimicrobial susceptibility, biochemical reactions pattern and biotype number. The result showed significant decrease in the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value of aztreonam and ceftazidime (≤ 8 μg/mL), as compared to control group (≥ 16 μg/mL). It was observed that 9% reaction was altered in the treated groups with respect to control out of the 33 biochemical reactions. Moreover, biotype number of this organism was substantially changed in group II (7731 7376) and group III (7710 3176) on day 10 as compared to control (7710 3376). The result suggested that biofield treatment had an impact on E. cloacae with respect to antimicrobial susceptibility, alteration of biochemical reactions pattern and biotype.

Source:

https://www.trivedieffect.com/science/in-vitro-evaluation-of-biofield-treatment-on-enterobacter-cloacae-impact-on-antimicrobial-susceptibility-and-biotype

https://www.omicsonline.org/open-access/in-vitro-evaluation-of-biofield-treatment-on-enterobacter-cloacae-impact-onantimicrobial-susceptibility-and-biotype-2155-9597-1000241.php?aid=60445

IMPACT OF US BROWN SWISS GENETICS ON MILK QUALITY FROM LOW-INPUT HERDS IN SWITZERLAND: INTERACTIONS WITH SEASON

This study aimed to investigate the effect of, and interactions between, US Brown Swiss genetics and season on milk yield, basic composition and fatty acid profiles, from cows on low-input farms in Switzerland. Milk samples (n=1,976) were collected from 1,220 crossbreed cows with differing proportions of BS, Braunvieh and Original Braunvieh genetics on 40 farms during winter-indoor and summer-grazing seasons. Cows with more Brown Swiss genetics produced more milk in winter but not in summer, possibly because of underfeeding high-yielding cows on low-input pasture-based diets. Cows with more Original Braunvieh genetics produced milk with higher concentrations of (i) nutritionally desirable trans-9 palmitoleic, eicosapentaenoic and docosapentaenoic acids, throughout the year, and (ii) vaccenic and α-linolenic acids, total omega-3 fatty acids concentrations and a higher omega-3/omega-6 ratio during the summer-grazing period only. This suggests that overall milk quality could be improved by re-focusing breeding strategies on the cows’ ability to respond to local dietary environments and seasonal changes in feeding regimes.

Impact of spatio-temporal shade dynamics on winter wheat growth and yield

During two growing seasons (2013-2014, 2014-2015), an artificial shade structure was installed on the experimental farm of Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech to evaluate winter wheat growth, productivity and quality under shade. During both seasons, global radiation (MJ/m²/days) at crop canopy level was measured with quantum sensors (CS300- Campbell Scientific Inc., USA – accuracy ± 5 % for the daily global radiation) and recorded every minute by a data logger (CR1000 - Campbell Scientific Inc., USA). These data are compiled at a daily time scale for each treatment (CS: constant shade, PS: periodic shade, NS: no shade) into the tables “GR_2013_2014.txt” and “GR_2014_2015.txt”.

During the cropping season, we sampled winter wheat to assess aboveground biomass, dry matter dynamics, final yield, yield components (thousand grain yield, grain size, and spike per m²) and grain protein content. These data are compiled in the two tables “sampling_2013_2014.txt” and “sampling_2014_2015.txt”. Samples were taken from three adjacent sowing lines of 40 cm. To assess dry matter distribution (g/m²), wheat plants were subdivided into spikes (DM_Spike_g_m2) and straw (DM_Straw_g_m2), dried and weighed. The final yield is expressed in t/ha at 0% humidity (Yield_t_ha_0%). We assessed the proportion of grain size using 3 sieves: 2.2, 2.5, 2.8 mm (Grain_weight_seive_2.2mm, Grain_weight_seive_2.5mm, Grain_weight_seive_2.8mm). Thousand grain weight at 0% humidity was calculated on subsamples from the harvested plots (TGW_g_0%). Protein content (%) analysis was performed with near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy technique (Protein_content_%).

Detailed information on the experimental design will be available in the following paper: “Impact of spatio-temporal shade dynamics on wheat growth and yield, perspectives for temperate agroforestry” in European Journal of Agronomy.
