Can wildland fire management alter 21st-century subalpine fire and forests in Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, USA

In subalpine forests of the western United States that historically experienced infrequent, high-severity fire, whether fire management can shape 21st-century fire regimes and forest dynamics to meet natural resource objectives is not known. Managed wildfire use (i.e., allowing lightning-ignited fires to burn when risk is low instead of suppressing them) is one approach for maintaining natural fire regimes and fostering mosaics of forest structure, stand age, and tree-species composition, while protecting people and property. However, little guidance exists for where and when this strategy may be effective with climate change. We simulated most of the contiguous forest in Grand Teton National Park, WY to ask: (1) How would subalpine fires and forest structure be different if fires had not been suppressed during the last three decades? (2) What is the relative influence of climate change versus fire management strategy on future fire and forests? We contrasted fire and forests from 1989-2098 under two fire management scenarios (managed wildfire use and fire suppression), two general circulation models (CNRM-CM5 and GFDL-ESM2M), and two representative concentration pathways (8.5 and 4.5). We found little difference between management scenarios in the number, size, or severity of fires during the last three decades. With 21st-century warming, fire activity increased rapidly, particularly after 2050, and followed nearly identical trajectories in both management scenarios. Area burned per year between 2018-2099 was 1,700% greater than in the last three decades (1989-2017). Large areas of forest were abruptly lost; only 65% of the original 40,178 ha of forest remained by 2098. However, forests stayed connected and fuels were abundant enough to support profound increases in burning through this century. Our results indicate that strategies emphasizing managed wildfire use, rather than suppression, will not alter climate-induced changes to fire and forests in subalpine land

Modelling 21st-century refugia and the impact of climate change on Amazonia's largest primates

Edaphic and vegetation conditions can render climatically suitable sites inadequate for a species to persist, constraining the amount of suitable habitat and the possibilities of tracking preferred climatic conditions as they shift in response to climate change. We combined climatic and remotely sensed data to model current and future distributions of nine extant taxa of ateline primates across the Amazon basin. We used the models to identify and quantify potential range changes and refugia of suitable habitats from the present to the latter half of the 21st century. We applied an ensemble forecasting approach for species distribution models using 596 spatially rarefied occurrences. We parameterised these models by combining reflectance data from a basin‐wide Landsat TM/ETM+ image composite, three sets of bioclimatic layers containing data for the current period, and two different (moderate and worst-case) climate change scenarios for 2041-2070. Eight out of nine taxa are likely to experience pronounced range losses, with seven of them predicted to lose over 50% of their currently suitable habitats irrespective of climate change scenarios. Modelled ateline richness exhibited a broad decrease in high-richness areas and a possible redistribution along the northernmost parts of western Amazonia. Refugia from 21st-century climate change for the whole complex was mostly concentrated in western Amazonia, especially in its southern part. We identified hotspots of vulnerability to climate change and 21st-century refugia for all Amazonian atelines while accounting for habitat characteristics that are important to guarantee the continued existence of suitable habitats for these strictly arboreal taxa. Increasing the understanding of climate change impacts on Amazonia's largest primates can help to inform spatial conservation planning decisions and management to sustain forest-dwelling biodiversity over large areas such as Amazonia.

Data from: Glacial ice supports a distinct and undocumented polar bear subpopulation persisting in late 21st-century sea-ice conditions

Polar bears are susceptible to climate warming because of their dependence on sea ice, which is declining rapidly. We present the first evidence for a genetically distinct and functionally isolated group of polar bears in Southeast Greenland. These bears occupy sea-ice conditions resembling those projected for the High Arctic in the late 21st century, with an annual ice-free period that is >100 days longer than the estimated fasting threshold for the species. Whereas polar bears in most of the Arctic depend on annual sea ice to catch seals, Southeast Greenland bears have a year-round hunting platform in the form of freshwater glacial mélange. This suggests that marine-terminating glaciers, although of limited availability, may serve as previously unrecognized climate refugia. Conservation of Southeast Greenland polar bears, which meet the criteria for recognition as the world's 20th polar bear subpopulation, is necessary to preserve the genetic diversity and evolutionary potential of the species.

Defeating the 21st century demon 'Cybercrime' on corporate bodies in Nigeria: is security intelligence a weapon? A quantitative study

This paper unveils the role of security intelligence in facilitating the war against cybercrime in organizations. it introduces the term cybercrime and security intelligence with financial organizations in Nigeria as the focus of the paper. Since the invention of information and communication technology in Nigeria, citizens have become fascinated and engrossed. Unfortunately, it opened the door for people with malicious intent to attack individuals, organizations, and nations. Thus, the paper views the problem of information vulnerability, finds out the level of cybercrime in financial entities, establishes the type of cybercrime, and assesses security intelligence awareness among staff and customers. The paper employed the simple-random sampling technic, using a primary and secondary source of information, analyzing with frequency counts, percentages, and charts for the demographic variables, and the use of chi-square through SPSS data processing. The Discussion of findings states the ubiquity of cybercrime among financial organizations. It reveals that phishing scams, website spoofing, piracy, ransomware, and Hacking are the top cyber-crime types commonly used. Thus, the administration of security intelligence can reduce internal and external threats in an organization. Furthermore, the paper states that security intelligence intervention is independent of the nature of cybercrime across the organization. However, the paper recommends that organizations need to enlighten their staff and customers with measures to safeguard information against cybercrime with the usage of security intelligence techniques or any other proactive measures.

Early 21st century accelerated glacier shrinkage and associated climatic drivers in Bhaga basin, north-western Himalaya

This study investigates the glacier changes in the Bhaga basin, western Himalaya during the last five decades based on various satellite imagery: Corona KH4 (1971), Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+; 2000), Linear Imaging Self-Scanning Sensor (LISS IV; 2013), Sentinel 2 (2016 and 2018). We compare glacier changes on spatial and temporal scales and their dependency on local topographic settings (elevation, slope, aspect, debris cover, presence of glacial lakes) and climatic fluctuations. Long-term (1900-present) reanalysis climatic datasets were evaluated to monitor the temperature and precipitation trend of the region. Glacier mapping from 2013 (LISS IV) images yielded 306 glaciers (>0.2 km²) with a total area of 360.3 ± 4.0 km², of which 55.7 ± 0.6 km² was covered by debris. Glaciers in the Bhaga basin lost -7.9 ± 1.5% (-0.17% yr¯¹) of ice during 1971-2018 with a significant heterogeneous rate within tributary watersheds. The number of analyzed glaciers increased by nine due to fragmentations. In recent decades (2000-18), the deglaciation rate has increased significantly (-0.25% yr¯¹) compared to previous decades (1971-2000; -0.12% yr¯¹). The retreat rate has been observed to be much lower than previously reported. Heterogeneous ice loss was mostly controlled by the size, altitudinal range, orientation, and debris cover. Analysis and inter-comparison of multiple gridded climatic data during the last century shows a drastic change in climatic trends around 2000 in western Himalaya. Asian Precipitation-Highly Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation (APHRODITE) data reveals an increasing trend in temperature (0.019° C yr¯¹) and a significant decreasing trend in precipitation (-1.969 mm yr¯¹) after 1990. The observed glacier change in the Bhaga basin is in similarity to the observed climatic trend for the western Himalaya.
