Acoustic and temporal birdsong measurements
<p>In tropical birds, survival is dependent on the ability to effectively communicate with others against a background of high ambient noise. The Acoustic Niche Hypothesis proposes that the deterrent selective force of signal masking has caused animals sharing a habitat to partition their calling behaviour amongst the acoustic bandwidths available, so as to minimise interference between one another. Whether and why species share the so-called 'acoustic space' remains a gap in our understanding of animal ecosystems. The aim of this study was to investigate differences between the acoustic structure of avian communities in two spatially distinct habitats in the montane tropical forests of the Caparaó National Park in south-eastern Brazil, and to test whether the distribution of birdsong at each conformed to the ANH. Birdsong from nine hours of passive acoustic recordings at each study site were analysed using principal component analyses. The results contradicted the ANH, revealing strikingly similar patterns of synchronised vocal behaviour. No correlation was evident between the acoustic and temporal partitioning behaviour of songbirds. This study provides a novel comparative analysis of the acoustic dynamics in two separate and diverse avian communities and support for theories of synchronized vocal behaviour in such groups.</p>

<p>Database of the acoustic parameters measured in the “Principal” Theater of Valencia (Spain). There was one sound source position located in the middle of the proscenium and twenty-three positions of the microphone in the room. Measurements were done twice, the first one with the stage opening curtain opened (points from 1 to 23) and the second one with it closed (points from 23 to 46). The database can be used to analyze the acoustic behavior of the theater, and to do an acoustic model of the room. </p>

A practical approach to measuring the acoustic diversity by community ecology methods
<p>The study of the diversity of animal signals on within- and among-species levels is the key to uncover mechanisms that shape the evolution of communication systems. However, the methods used to quantify acoustic diversity (like repertoire size) lack to grasp several aspects of acoustic diversity. Here, we propose a new framework for the study of animal communication, in which we decompose the acoustic diversity with the methodological toolbox from community ecology.</p> <p>We explore how different diversity estimates reflecting different aspects of acoustic diversity can be applied to characterise the complexity of acoustic signals. We propose that this approach can be used in a wide range of animal taxa to derive further insights about the function and evolution of communication systems besides the traditional methods.</p> <p>To illustrate the use of our approach in a case study, we used the song of collared flycatcher (<em>Ficedula albicollis)</em> as a model system. Based on three frequency and time variables, we calculated three diversity indies (FRic, FEve, and FDiv) to characterise the distribution of song elements (syllables) in the acoustic parameter space. We aimed to uncover the interrelations of diversity indices, reveal the degree of among-individual consistency, and investigate their relationships with certain aspects of individual quality.</p> <p>We found that the chosen diversity indices were largely independent from each other and showed different consistency patterns that were timescale dependent indicating different signalling potential of individual-specific attributes. We also found that FEve strongly related to the age of males. Our case study showed that decomposing the diversity into different components can reveal additional biologically meaningful aspects of birdsong.</p>

N-S and E-W components of the current (averaged by cruise cycle) as measured by a shipboard Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) aboard the CCE LTER process cruise in the California Current region, 2007.
Underway measurements by the ADCP are made (about every 15 mins) on cruises to determine how fast water is moving across an entire water column, then averaged by cruise cycle. The ADCP measures the absolute speed of water currents with sound waves (Doppler effect) at multiple depths within the water column, and profile data are available immediately. For these data, the N-S and E-W components of the current were averaged by cycle.
