The concurrent assessment of agronomic, ecological, and environmental variables enables better choice of agroecological service crop termination management
<p>1. Although organic farming was originally promoted as an alternative farming system to address agronomic, environmental, and ecological issues, its conventionalisation has led to an intensification and specialisation of production. In light of this, several studies have questioned the environmental benefits of organic farming as well as its agronomic viability. Thus, there is a need to improve organic vegetable systems to reduce their environmental impact without affecting their productivity. To tackle this challenge, European farmers and researchers have recently started to focus on agroecological service crops (ASCs). However, few studies have simultaneously evaluated the agronomic, environmental, and ecological aspects of ASC management under different European pedo-climatic conditions.</p> <p>2. We evaluated effects of the ASC management strategies: no-till roller crimping (NT-RC) and green manuring (T-GM) on cropping system performance using agronomic, environmental, and ecological indicators, to exemplify the need for multidimensional analysis to understand management implications for addressing environmental and agronomic challenges. We combined the results from eleven organic vegetable field trials conducted in seven European countries over a period of two years to test for general trends.</p> <p>3. Our results provide solid evidence that NT-RC management across different pedo-climatic conditions in Europe enhances the activity density of ground and rove beetles, and improves both the potential energy recycling within the system and weed control. However, in NT-RC plots lower cash crop yield and quality, energetic efficiency of production, and activity density of spiders was observed compared to T-GM.</p> <p>4. Synthesis and applications: Multidimensional analyses using agronomic, environmental, and ecological indicators are required to understand the implications of agricultural management in agroecosystem functioning. Introducing agroecological service crops combined with the use of no-till roller crimping is a promising strategy for improving agronomic performance (e.g., fewer weeds) and reducing environmental (e.g., increasing the potentially recyclable energy), and ecological (e.g., enhancing the activity density of beneficial taxa such as ground and rove beetles) impacts. However, our study also indicates a need for agronomic and environmental improvements while promoting a wider acceptance of this strategy.29-Nov-2021 --</p>
Data from: Local and landscape scale woodland cover and diversification of agroecological practices shape butterfly communities in tropical smallholder landscapes
<p>The conversion of biodiversity-rich woodland to farmland and subsequent management has strong, often negative, impacts on biodiversity. In tropical smallholder agricultural landscapes, the impacts of agriculture on insect communities, both through habitat change and subsequent farmland management, is understudied. The use of agroecological practices has social and agronomic benefits for smallholders. Although ecological co-benefits of agroecological practices are assumed, systematic empirical assessments of biodiversity effects of agroecological practices are missing, particularly in Africa.</p> <p>In Malawi, we assessed butterfly abundance, species richness, species assemblages and community life-history traits on 24 paired woodland and smallholder-managed farmland sites located across a gradient of woodland cover within a 1 km radius. We tested whether habitat type (woodland vs. farmland) and woodland cover at the landscape scale interactively shaped butterfly communities. Farms varied in the implementation of agroecological pest and soil management practices and flowering plant species richness.</p> <p>Farmland had lower butterfly abundances and approximately half the species richness than woodland. Farmland butterfly communities had, on average, a larger wingspan than woodland site communities. Surprisingly, higher woodland cover in the landscape had no effect on butterfly abundance in both habitats. In contrast, species richness was higher with higher woodland cover. Butterfly species assemblages were distinct between wood- and farmland and shifted across the woodland cover gradient.</p> <p>Farmland butterfly abundance, but not species richness, was higher with higher flowering plant species richness on farms. Farms with a higher number of agroecological pest management practices had a lower abundance of the dominant butterfly species, but not of rarer species. However, a larger number of agroecological soil management practices was associated with a higher abundance of rarer species. </p> <p><em>Synthesis and applications</em>: We show that diversified agroecological soil practices and flowering plant richness enhanced butterfly abundance on farms. However, our results suggest that on-farm measures cannot compensate for the negative effects of continued woodland conversion. Therefore, we call for more active protection of remaining African woodlands in tandem with promoting agroecological soil management practices and on-farm flowering plant richness to conserve butterflies whilst benefiting smallholders.</p>

Drivers of diversity and community structure of bees in an agroecological region of Zimbabwe
<p>Worldwide bees provide an important ecosystem service of plant pollination. Climate change and land-use changes are among drivers threatening bee survival with mounting evidence of species decline and extinction. In developing countries, rural areas constitute a significant proportion of the country's land but information is lacking on how different habitat types and weather patterns in these areas influence bee populations.</p> <p>This study investigated how weather variables and habitat-related factors influence the abundance, diversity, and distribution of bees across seasons in a farming rural area of Zimbabwe. Bees were systematically sampled in five habitat types (natural woodlots, pastures, homesteads, fields, and gardens) recording ground cover, grass height, flower abundance, and types, tree abundance and recorded elevation, temperature, light intensity, wind speed, wind direction, and humidity. Zero-inflated models, censored regression models, and PCAs were used to understand the influence of explanatory variables on bee community composition, abundance, and diversity.</p> <p>Bee abundance was positively influenced by the number of plant species in flower (P < 0.0001). Bee abundance increased with increasing temperatures up to 28.50C but beyond this, the temperature was negatively associated with bee abundance. Increasing wind speeds marginally decreased the probability of finding bees.</p> <p>Bee diversity was highest in fields, homesteads, and natural woodlots compared to other habitats, and the contributions of the genus Apis were disproportionately high across all habitats. The genus Megachile was mostly associated with homesteads while Nomia was associated with grasslands.</p> <p>Synthesis and applications. Our study suggests that some bee species could become more proliferous in certain habitats thus compromising diversity and consequently ecosystem services. These results highlight the importance of setting aside bee-friendly habitats that can be refuge sites for species susceptible to land-use changes.</p>
Promoting conservation agriculture through push-pull technology as an agroecological transition.
<p>Abstract <br>Low soil fertility, weeds, pests, and climatic change severely threaten crop productivity and agricultural <br>sustainability, especially in SSA. Despite decades of research finding adequate technical solutions for most <br>situations of food systems, the problem of low food productivity has persisted. In an effort to counter this, <br>intensive agricultural systems have been mooted including the high application of agrochemicals to control <br>weeds, and pests and increase production. However, these initiatives have not lasted beyond the project cycle <br>and they have instigated land degradation through unsustainable practices. As a solution, conservation <br>agricultural practices have been promoted among small-scale farmers. These practices focus on minimizing soil <br>disturbance, crop diversification, and cover cropping. Push-pull technology is an aspect of conservation <br>agriculture where intercropping a cereal crop with a repellent plant, such as desmodium and planting an <br>attractive trap plant, such as brachiaria or Napier grass as a border crop around this intercrop. This paper aimed <br>at reviewing existing literature to establish the linkage between conservation agriculture components, push-pull <br>technology, and a sustainable agroecological transition. A list of questions directed the discussion where push<br>pull technology has been proven to be an aspect that promotes conservation agriculture. It has been able to <br>increase crop yields, reduced tillage, established a cover crop on the farm, and further, PPT has a regenerative <br>aspect through the integration of livestock husbandry providing organic manure that and together with the <br>nitrogen fixation ability of the grass, improve soil fertility, conserved soil moisture, and reduce erosion. This <br>reduces the use of inorganic input, and machinery making farming economical for small-holder farmers. </p>

Data from: Quantifying genotype x environment effects in long-term common wheat yield trials from an agroecologically diverse production region
Multienvironment trials (METs) are used to investigate the performance of crop genotypes. To efficiently generate reliable performance estimates, the magnitude and patterns of genotype × environment interaction (G×E) in MET data must be known. We quantified G×E in fall-planted common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) in California, with the goal of increasing the reliability and efficiency of statewide variety testing activities. Linear mixed models and the genotype main effects plus G×E interaction effects (GGE) biplot method were used to analyze MET data for 211 common wheat genotypes, the MET consisted of 9 locations and 14 seasons. The representativeness and discriminating power of the MET locations were tested, and estimates of the optimum number of test locations were made. The analyses did not find evidence for significant, repeatable, crossover G×E. The genotype and G×E effects were of a similar magnitude, and the G×E effects were relatively strong compared with other sources of variance but were dominated by seasonal effects, with potentially repeatable genotype-by-location (G×L) effects being relatively weak. The GGE analyses did not detect repeatable G×L patterns across seasons. As a result, we conclude that the cereal production regions of California consist of a single, but unstable, mega-environment for common wheat grain yield. The test location evaluation found few significant differences between test locations in terms of how well they represent the target production environment. We estimate that the number of test locations could be reduced while maintaining trial accuracy, which would improve the resource use efficiency of statewide trial activities without sacrificing information about variety-specific common wheat yield performance.
