Muscle fibres (thin arrow, in A and C) in the protuberances (thick arrow in A and C) extend to the lining of the foregut containing a filtration apparatus, the 'oyster basket', which appears as a dark region within the oesophagus or foregut (A). The epicuticle is perforated by a number of pores, visible dorsally and ventrally on the distal portion of the proboscis (A).
