The Bear Brook Watershed in Maine, USA: Long-term atmospheric deposition chemistry 1987 - 2012
This dataset includes ambient atmospheric deposition data for the Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM). The BBWM consists of two watersheds, the reference East Bear (EB), receiving ambient deposition, and the treated West Bear (WB), which received experimental elevated N+S deposition for 27 years. Ambient wet deposition was collected from 1987 to 2012 using AeroChem collectors, and the measured precipitation chemistry was interpolated to calculate monthly and annual fluxes.

Atmospheric pollutant concentrations and leaf chemistry variables collected along gradients of median household income and traffic density in Salt Lake Valley, UT
<p>We utilize traffic density and <i>Convolvulus arvensis </i>leaf chemistry<i> </i>to understand spatial patterns linking atmospheric pollution and household income in the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, USA. We hypothesize that traffic density will explain variation in atmospheric NO<sub>x</sub> and O<sub>3</sub> concentrations. In addition, we expect foliar <span>%N and nitrogen isotope ratios (</span>δ<sup>15</sup>N) to be elevated and carbon isotope ratios (δ<sup>13</sup>C) to be depleted on high traffic density roads<span>. These hypotheses were supported: we found the</span><span> highest</span><span> NO<sub>x</sub> and lowest O<sub>3</sub> concentrations on high-traffic density roads. Also, NO<sub>x</sub> concentrations were higher in low-income neighborhoods. Low-income neighborhoods contained a greater density of high-traffic roads than high-income neighborhoods. Foliar %N was highest in low-income neighborhoods and was correlated with NO<sub>x</sub> and O<sub>3</sub></span>, while δ<sup>15</sup>N was more depleted with increasing O<sub>3</sub>. These findings indicate that the distribution of high-traffic density roads plays a significant role in inequities in pollution exposure between high- and low-income neighborhoods, which is reflected in leaf chemistry.</p>

Advanced methods for uncertainty assessment and global sensitivity analysis of a Eulerian atmospheric chemistry transport model
<p>Atmospheric chemistry transport models (ACTMs) are extensively used to provide scientific support for the development of policies to mitigate against the detrimental effects of air pollution on human health and ecosystems. Therefore, it is essential to quantitatively assess the level of model uncertainty and to identify the model input parameters that contribute the most to the uncertainty. For complex process-based models, such as ACTMs, uncertainty and global sensitivity analyses are still challenging and are often limited by computational constraints due to the requirement of a large number of model runs. In this work, we demonstrate an emulator-based approach to uncertainty quantification and variance-based sensitivity analysis for the EMEP4UK model (regional application of the European Monitoring and Evaluation Programme Meteorological Synthesizing Centre-West). A separate Gaussian process emulator was used to estimate model predictions at unsampled points in the space of the uncertain model inputs for every modelled grid cell. The training points for the emulator were chosen using an optimised Latin hypercube sampling design. The uncertainties in surface concentrations of O<sub>3</sub>, NO<sub>2</sub>, and PM<sub>2.5</sub> were propagated from the uncertainties in the anthropogenic emissions of NO<sub>x</sub>, SO<sub>2</sub>, NH<sub>3</sub>, VOC, and primary PM<sub>2.5</sub> reported by the UK National Atmospheric Emissions Inventory. The results of the EMEP4UK uncertainty analysis for the annually averaged model predictions indicate that modelled surface concentrations of O<sub>3</sub>, NO<sub>2</sub>, and PM<sub>2.5</sub> have the highest level of uncertainty in the grid cells comprising urban areas (up to ± 7%, ± 9%, and ± 9% respectively). The uncertainty in the surface concentrations of O<sub>3 </sub>and NO<sub>2</sub> were dominated by uncertainties in NO<sub>x</sub> emissions combined from non-dominant sectors (i.e. all sectors excluding energy production and road transport) and shipping emissions. Additionally, uncertainty in O<sub>3</sub> was driven by uncertainty VOC emissions combined from sectors excluding solvent use. Uncertainties in the modelled PM<sub>2.5</sub> concentrations were mainly driven by uncertainties in primary PM<sub>2.5</sub> emissions and NH<sub>3</sub> emissions from the agricultural sector. Uncertainty and sensitivity analyses were also performed for five selected grid sells for monthly averaged model predictions to illustrate the seasonal change in the magnitude of uncertainty and change in the contribution of different model inputs to the overall uncertainty. Our study demonstrates the viability of a Gaussian process emulator-based approach for uncertainty and global sensitivity analyses, which can be applied to other ACTMs. Conducting these analyses helps to increase the confidence in model predictions. Additionally, the emulators created for these analyses can be used to predict the ACTM response for any other combination of perturbed input emissions within the ranges set for the original Latin hypercube sampling design without the need to re-run the ACTM, thus allowing fast exploratory assessments at significantly reduced computational costs.</p> <p>The upload contains the uncertainty and sensitivity data together with the analysis scripts.</p>

ATom: Merged Atmospheric Chemistry, Trace Gases, and Aerosols, Version 2
This dataset provides information on greenhouse gases and human-produced air pollution, including atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), tropospheric ozone (O3), and black carbon (BC) aerosols, collected during airborne campaigns conducted by NASA's Atmospheric Tomography (ATom) mission. This dataset includes merged data from all instruments plus additional data such as numbered profiles and distance flown. Merged data products have been created for seven different aggregation intervals (1 second, 10 seconds, and 5 instrument-specific intervals). In the case of data obtained over longer time intervals (e.g., flask data), the merge files provide (weighted) averages to match the sampling intervals. This comprehensive dataset will be used to improve the representation of chemically reactive gases and short-lived climate forcers in global models of atmospheric chemistry and climate.

This dataset includes merged data from all instruments plus additional data such as numbered profiles and distance flown. Merged data have been created for seven different sampling intervals. In the case of data obtained over longer time intervals (e.g. flask data), the merge files provide (weighted) averages to match the sampling intervals. ATom deploys an extensive gas and aerosol payload on the NASA DC-8 aircraft for a systematic, global-scale sampling of the atmosphere, profiling continuously from 0.2 to 12 km altitude. Flights occurred in each of 4 seasons from 2016 to 2018. Flights originate from the Armstrong Flight Research Center in Palmdale, California, fly north to the western Arctic, south to the South Pacific, east to the Atlantic, north to Greenland, and return to California across central North America. ATom establishes a single, contiguous, global-scale dataset. This comprehensive dataset will be used to improve the representation of chemically reactive gases and short-lived climate forcers in global models of atmospheric chemistry and climate. Profiles of the reactive gases will also provide critical information for the validation of satellite data, particularly in remote areas where in situ data is lacking. Complete aircraft flight information including, but not limited to, latitude, longitude, and altitude are also provided. This data release provides results from all instruments on all four ATom flight campaigns.
