Data reported in: Effects of ozone isotopologue formation on the clumped-isotope composition of atmospheric O2
<p>Tropospheric 18O18O is an emerging proxy for past tropospheric ozone and free-tropospheric temperatures. The basis of these applications is the idea that isotope-exchange reactions in the atmosphere drive 18O18O abundances toward isotopic equilibrium. However, previous work used an offline box-model framework to explain the 18O18O budget, approximating the interplay of atmospheric chemistry and transport. This approach, while convenient, has poorly characterized uncertainties. To investigate these uncertainties, and to broaden the applicability of the 18O18O proxy, we developed a scheme to simulate atmospheric 18O18O abundances (quantified as ∆36 values) online within the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model. These results are compared to both new and previously published atmospheric observations from the surface to 33 km. Simulations using a simplified O2 isotopic equilibration scheme within GEOS-Chem show quantitative agreement with measurements only in the middle stratosphere; modeled ∆36 values are too high elsewhere. Investigations using a comprehensive model of the O-O2-O3 isotopic photochemical system and proof-of-principle experiments suggest that the simple equilibration scheme omits an important pressure dependence to ∆36 values: the anomalously efficient titration of 18O18O to form ozone. Incorporating these effects into the online ∆36 calculation scheme in GEOS-Chem yields quantitative agreement for all available observations. While this previously unidentified bias affects the atmospheric budget of 18O18O in O2, the modeled change in the mean tropospheric ∆36 value since 1850 C.E. is only slightly altered; it is still quantitatively consistent with the ice-core ∆36 record, implying that the tropospheric ozone burden increased less than ~40% over the twentieth century.</p>
Improving gross primary production estimation accuracy on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau considering the effect of atmospheric CO2 fertilization
<p>This GPP dataset was generated by the improved GPP estimation model which introduced atmospheric CO2 fertilization effect and canopy-to-leaf CO2 concentration gradients into the CASA model. The dataset was provided in TIF format at a month interval. The valid value ranges from 0 to 1000, and the background filled value is set to NoData. The scale factor of the data is 1. Each TIF file represents a month GPP at a daily cumulative value (unit: g C m-2 month-1).</p>

Contrasting effects of Miocene and Anthropocene levels of atmospheric CO2 on silicon accumulation in a model grass
<p>Grasses are hyper-accumulators of silicon (Si) which they acquire from the soil and deposit in tissues to resist environmental stresses. Moreover, given the high metabolic costs of herbivore defensive chemicals and structural constituents (e.g. cellulose), grasses may substitute Si for these components when carbon (C) is limited. Indeed, high Si uptake grasses evolved in the Miocene when atmospheric CO2 concentration was much lower than present levels. It is; however, unknown how pre-industrial CO2 concentrations affect Si accumulation in grasses. Using <em>Brachypodium distachyon</em>, we hydroponically manipulated Si-supply (0.0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2 mM) and grew plants under Miocene (200 ppm) and Anthropocene levels of CO2 comprising ambient (410 ppm) and elevated (640 ppm) CO2 concentrations. We showed that regardless of Si-treatments, the Miocene CO2 levels increased foliar Si concentrations by 47% and 56% relative to plants grown under ambient and elevated CO2, respectively. This is due to higher accumulation overall, but also the reallocation of Si from the roots into the shoots. Our results suggest that grasses may accumulate high Si concentrations in foliage when carbon is less available (i.e. pre-industrial CO2 levels) but this is likely to decline under future climate change scenarios, potentially leaving grasses more susceptible to environmental stresses</p>

Large-eddy simulation of an atmospheric bore and associated gravity wave effects on wind farm performance in the Southern Great Plains
<p>Animations from weather radars (observations) and simulations (modeling) of an atmospheric bore and associated gravity waves during the AWAKEN field campaign from a case study on 06 June 2023. The first animation is reflectivity from the NEXRAD WSR-88D system at the Oklahoma City radar site (KTLX) operated by the National Weather Service. The second animation is wind speed at 95, 145, and 270 m agl from the Texas Tech X-Band radars at the AWAKEN site. The third and fourth animations are for simulation results using the Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF) with two domains. The third animation is vertical velocity at 1 km agl and potential temperature at 200 m agl on domain d01, which has a horizontal grid spacing of 300 m. The fourth animation is hub-height wind speed and perturbation pressure along with simulated power output for 3 wind turbines in each of the four rows on domain d01, which has a horizontal grid spacing of 20 m. The wind turbines are NREL 2.8 MW turbines parameterized using a generalized actuator disk. </p> <p>These animations are included as supplementary material for the manuscript "Large-eddy simulation of an atmospheric bore and associated gravity wave effects on wind farm performance in the Southern Great Plains" submitted to <em>Wind Energy Science</em>. </p>
