Audience data from 17 research data repositories between 2015 and 2020

The file compiles audience data from 17 research data repositories between 2015 and 2020. It was generated as part of a study to quantify the consultation of data deposited in scientific repositories. This study gave rise to a paper at the seventh conference "Digital Document and Society" (Document numérique & Société), held on 28 and 29 September 2020 in Nancy (France).

This table gathers the following information for each of the 17 repositories:

Number of data available in the repository;

Number of pages views per month and per year;

Number of users per month and per year;

Number of downloads per month and per year;

Number of data citations in the scientific literature per year.

The collection method is described in the above-mentioned paper.

Data from: Territorial defence in a network: audiences only matter to male crabs primed for confrontation
Territorial contests often occur in the presence of conspecifics not directly involved in the interaction. Actors may alter their behaviour in the presence of this audience, an 'audience effect', and audiences themselves may alter their behaviour as a result of observing an interaction, a 'bystander effect'. Previous work has documented these effects by looking at each in isolation, but to our knowledge, none has investigated their interaction; something that is more likely to represent a realistic scenario for species where individuals aggregate spatially. We therefore have a somewhat limited understanding of the extent and direction of these potentially complex indirect social effects on behaviour. Here we examined how audience and bystander effects work in tandem to modify resident male aggressive behaviour towards intruders in European fiddler crabs, Afruca tangeri. We found that male crabs with an audience showed greater aggressive behaviour towards an intruder compared to males without an audience, but only if they had acted as a bystander to an aggressive signalling interaction prior to the intrusion. Indeed, bystanding during aggressive interactions elevated aggressive responses to intruders maximally if there was an audience present. Our results suggest that bystanding had a priming effect on territory-holding males, potentially by providing information on the immediate level of competition in the local neighbourhood, and that same-sex audiences only matter if males have been primed. This study highlights the fundamental importance of considering broader interaction networks in studying real-world dyadic interactions and of including non-vertebrate taxonomic groups in these studies.
Data from: Attacked ravens flexibly adjust signalling behaviour according to audience composition
A fundamental attribute of social intelligence is the ability to monitor third party relationships, which has been repeatedly demonstrated in primates, and recently also in captive ravens. It is yet unknown how ravens make use of this ability when dealing with different types of social relationships simultaneously during complex real-life situations. Free-ranging non-breeder ravens live in societies characterized by high fission-fusion dynamics and structured by age, pair-bond status, and kinship. Here, we show that free-ranging ravens modify communication during conflicts according to audience composition. When being attacked by dominant conspecifics, victims of aggression signal their distress via defensive calls. Victims increased call rates when their kin were in the bystander audience, but reduced call rates when the bystanders were bonding partners of their aggressors. Hence, ravens utilize social knowledge flexibly and likely based on their own need, i.e. alert nearby allies, and avoid alerting nearby rivals.
