Spatial personalities: a meta-analysis of consistent individual differences in spatial behavior
<p>Individual variation in behavior, particularly consistent among-individual differences (i.e., personality), has important ecological and evolutionary implications for population and community dynamics, trait divergence, and patterns of speciation. Nevertheless, individual variation in spatial behaviors, such as home range behavior, movement characteristics, or habitat use has yet to be incorporated into the concepts or methodologies of ecology and evolutionary biology. To evaluate evidence for the existence of consistent among-individual differences in spatial behavior – which we refer to as "spatial personality" – we performed a meta-analysis of 200 repeatability estimates of home range size, movement metrics, and habitat use. We found that the existence of spatial personality is a general phenomenon, with consistently high repeatability (r) across classes of spatial behavior (r = 0.67 - 0.82), taxa (r = 0.31 - 0.79), and time between repeated measurements (r = 0.54 - 0.74). These results suggest: (1) repeatable spatial behavior may either be a cause or consequence of the environment experienced and lead to spatial personalities that may limit the ability of individuals to behaviorally adapt to changing landscapes; (2) interactions between spatial phenotypes and environmental conditions could result in differential reproduction, survival, and dispersal, suggesting that among-individual variation may facilitate population-level adaptation; (3) spatial patterns of species' distributions and spatial population dynamics may be better understood by shifting from a mean field analytical approach towards methods that account for spatial personalities and their associated fitness and ecological dynamics.</p>

Pergola: boosting visualization and analysis of longitudinal data by unlocking genomic analysis tools - C. elegans unc-16 and N2 motion behavior dataset
<p>Dataset contains <em>Caenorhabditis</em> <em>elegans </em>motor behaviors originally used in this publication <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/nmeth.2560">10.1038/nmeth.2560</a> and downloaded from the available <a href="http://wormbehavior.mrc-lmb.cam.ac.uk/">DB</a> which points to Zenodo. The dataset consists in two worm strains, 20 individuals from a mutant unc-16 strain with reduced mobility and 40 individuals from a control N2 strain. The behavioral measures derived from each individual worm trajectory were available in a HDF5-formatted file (Hierarchical Data Format Version 5) that has been included in this dataset.</p> <p>The data set consist in:</p> <p>- a "mappings" folder containing all the mappings used by the pergola in the pipeline to convert data.</p> <p>- a "N2" folder containing the 40 HDF5 files with the measures derived from the N2 worms.</p> <p>- a "N2" folder containing the 20 HDF5 files with the measures derived from the unc-16 worms.</p>
Interaction-Based Behavioral Analysis in Twitter Social Network
<p>Literature studies usually use data sets consisting of data collected from many different metrics and user counts collected over different time periods. The data set used in this article was formed using completely up-to-date data obtained as a result of metrics measured in terms of scope and efficiency, sufficient and effective user counts, and filtering processes. To classify users correctly and make the classification performance high—in addition to parameters used in the literature such as tweets, account age, follower rank, average retweets and average likes—other parameters such as diameter, density, reciprocity, centralization and modularity were used. These metrics are the parameters that focus on a different area to reveal many aspects in which social network users interact. The data used to create the data set was collected from Twitter. The metric data forming the data set was extracted using Twitter Rest API V1.1 supporting search/tweet endpoints by means of the SocialBlade and Netlytic platforms.</p>

Data from: Multiple benefits drive helping behavior in a cooperatively breeding bird: an integrated analysis
Several hypotheses exist to explain the seemingly altruistic helping behavior of cooperative breeders, although the general utility of these hypotheses remains unclear. While the potential importance of inclusive fitness benefits (kin selection) is traditionally widely appreciated, it is increasingly recognized that direct benefits may be more important than assumed. We use an integrative two-step framework to assess support for current hypotheses in purple-crowned fairy-wrens, a species where subordinates vary in relatedness to breeders and helping increases productivity. After establishing that assumptions of pay-to-stay and social prestige hypotheses (predicting that helping functions as 'paying rent' to stay on the territory or as a signal of individual quality, respectively) were not met, and that parentage by subordinates is extremely rare, we tested whether subordinates adjusted nestling feeding rates following the predictions of the kin selection and group augmentation hypotheses. Benefits of kin selection result from investment in relatives, and group augmentation benefits accrue when subordinates invest more in their own future helpers, for example when they have a better chance of inheriting the breeding position. We found that subordinates fed siblings more than unrelated nestlings, indicating that kin selection could facilitate cooperation. Moreover, the effect of relatedness on feeding effort varied depending on the probability of inheriting a breeding position, suggesting that active group augmentation can explain investment by unrelated subordinates. This statistical interaction would have gone undetected had we not considered both factors simultaneously, illustrating that a focus on single hypotheses could lead to underestimation of their importance in explaining cooperative breeding.
Data from: A comparative analysis of the behavioral response to fishing boats in two albatross species
Anthropogenic food resources have significantly modified the foraging behavior of many animal species. They enhance large multi-specific aggregations of individuals, with strong ecological consequences. It is challenging to predict how individuals or species can differ in their reaction to these resources. For instance, there are wide variations in seabird species abundance behind fishing boats, and individual variations in interaction rates. Whether this is reflecting variations in fine-scale encounter rates or rather variations in attraction strength is poorly quantified. Here we compare the response of Wandering (WA) and Black-browed (BBA) albatrosses to fishing boats operating in sub-Antarctic waters. We use GPS tracking data from both birds and boats (Vessel Monitoring System). Attraction distances were similar between the 2 species (up to 30 km). BBA foraged further from fishing grounds and encountered boats less frequently than WA, but once they encountered a boat BBA were more strongly attracted (80% vs. 60% chance) and had a higher level of active interaction, compared to WA. Furthermore, in the absence of boats, BBA were rarely observed foraging over the habitat where the fisheries mainly operate, in contrast with WA. We thus report qualitative and quantitative differences in the response of these 2 species to the same fishing fleet. WA, the larger, more dominant and more generalist species was unexpectedly less attracted to fishing vessels. Comparing our results with previously published studies, we suggest that energetic requirements of individuals may be a crucial predictor for assessing risks of interactions with anthropogenic food resources.
