Assessing the impact of static and fluctuating ocean acidification on the behavior of Amphiprion percula

<p>Attached is the complete raw data from Vaughan and Dixson 2021 &lsquo;Assessing the impact of static and fluctuating ocean acidification on the behavior of&nbsp;<em>Amphiprion percula</em>&rsquo;.&nbsp;</p> <p>Data collected from the behavioral lateralization trials has been inputted into the file &lsquo;Vaughan_2020_Lateralization_Raw&rsquo;. Column A indicate the CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;treatment group, where &ldquo;SPD&rdquo; = Static Present Day, &ldquo;SFD&rdquo; = Static Future Day, &ldquo;FPD&rdquo; = Fluctuating Present Day, and &ldquo;FFD&rdquo; = Fluctuating Future Day. Each individual fish used from each treatment group (n=30) is displayed in Column B. Column C shows the binary results, in order, of each fish&rsquo;s turns in the T-maze, and was scored as 0 (right turn) or 1 (left turn) for a total of 10 turns. The total number of turns to the right and left are provided in Column D-E. The relative lateralization (<em>L</em><sub>R</sub>) of each fish was calculated {L<sub>R</sub>&nbsp;= [(Turn to the right &ndash; Turn to the left)/(Turn to the right + Turn to the left)]&nbsp;&lowast;&nbsp;100} in Column F. Absolute lateralization&nbsp;(<em>L</em><sub>A</sub>) is provided in Column G.</p> <p>Chemosensory response data has been inputted into the file &lsquo;Vaughan_2020_Chemosensory_Raw&rsquo;. Column A and B display treatment group and fish ID (n=20) as outlined above. The cue used in trial of either Tang (nonpredator) or Cod (predator) is provided in Column C, and the control in Column D. Numbers in these are used solely for the purpose of data analysis. The side of the cue in the flume is provided in Column E, and corresponds with the cue labelled in Column C. Buckets containing either the cue or control were placed above the flume and color coded as &ldquo;BS&rdquo; (blue side) and &ldquo;RS&rdquo; (red side), as the person scoring the trials was blinded. This also helped account for the switch (from one side of the flume to the other) that occurs halfway through each trial. Columns F-G represent results from the first 2min recording period, and Columns H-I represent results from the second 2min recording period. The total tallies from each fish are provided in Column J; the totals from each side are calculated in Columns K-L, and then sorted by either cue or control in Columns M-N. Proportions and percentages in cue and control are calculated and provided in Columns O-P and Q-R, respectively.&nbsp;</p> <p>Carbonate chemistry data is compiled and provided in the &lsquo;Vaughan_2020_Carbonate_Chemistry&rsquo;. Measurements were taken each week (Column A) of each treatment group (as stated above, Column B). Column C reflects the time recordings were taken in the fluctuating treatments to hit the high, mid and low CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;points at &ldquo;6:30&rdquo;, &ldquo;12:30&rdquo; and &ldquo;18:30&rdquo;. Measurements of static treatment groups were taken at randomly selected times to get the reflection of the carbonate chemistry of these treatments, but for the purpose of clarity in this document they are listed as &ldquo;Static&rdquo;. Measurements were taken from a subset of tanks each that rotated each week (Column D). Our target pH<sub>NBS</sub>&nbsp;values (i.e. what was programmed into the APEX System) are listed in Column E. Columns F-H displayed pH<sub>NBS</sub>&nbsp;(taken with APEX probes), temperature&nbsp;&deg;C (taken with a portable Mettler Toledo probe) and salinity (taken with a refractometer). Water samples were analyzed spectrophotometrically to provide pH<sub>T</sub>&nbsp;and dissolved inorganic carbon, with values provided in Columns I-J. Using the program CO2SYS, total alkalinity and&nbsp;<em>p</em>CO<sub>2</sub>&nbsp;were calculated, with values provided in Columns K-L.</p>

Data from: A dynamic state model of migratory behavior and physiology to assess the consequences of environmental variation and anthropogenic disturbance on marine vertebrates

Integrating behavior and physiology is critical to formulating new hypotheses on the evolution of animal life-history strategies. Migratory capital breeders acquire most of the energy they need to sustain migration, gestation and lactation before parturition. Therefore, when predicting the impact of environmental variation on such species, a mechanistic understanding of the physiology of their migratory behavior is required. Using baleen whales as a model system, we developed a dynamic state variable model that captures the interplay among behavioral decisions, energy, reproductive needs and the environment. We applied the framework to blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus) in the Eastern North Pacific Ocean, and explored the effects of environmental and anthropogenic perturbations on female reproductive success. We demonstrate the emergence of migration to track prey resources, enabling us to quantify the trade-offs among capital breeding, body condition, and metabolic expenses. We predict that periodic climatic oscillations affect reproductive success less than unprecedented environmental changes do. The effect of localized, acute anthropogenic impacts depended on whales' behavioral response to the disturbance; chronic, but weaker, disturbances had little effect on reproductive success. Because we link behavior and vital rates by modeling individuals' energetic budgets, we provide a general framework to investigate the ecology of migration and assess the population consequences of disturbance, while identifying critical knowledge gaps.

Data from: Sex, synchrony and skin contact: integrating multiple behaviors to assess pathogen transmission risk

<p>Direct pathogen and parasite transmission is fundamentally driven by a population's contact network structure, its demographic composition, and is further modulated by pathogen life history traits. Importantly, populations are most often concurrently exposed to a suite of pathogens, which is rarely investigated, because contact networks are typically inferred from spatial proximity only. Here, we use five years of detailed observations of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (<i>Tursiops aduncus</i>) that distinguish between four different types of social contact. We investigate how demography (sex, age) affects these different social behaviors. Three of the four social behaviors can be used as a proxy for understanding key routes of direct pathogen transmission (sexual contact, skin contact, and aerosol contact of respiratory vapor above the water surface). We quantify the demography-dependent network connectedness, representing the risk of exposure associated with the three pathogen transmission routes, quantify co-exposure risks and relate them to individual sociability. Our results suggest demography-driven disease risk in bottlenose dolphins, with males at greater risk than females, and transmission route-dependent implications for different age classes. We hypothesize that male alliance-formation and the divergent reproductive strategies in males and females drive the demography-dependent connectedness and hence exposure risk to pathogens. Our study provides evidence for the risk of co-exposure to pathogens transmitted along different transmission routes and that they relate to individual sociability. Hence, our results highlight the importance of a multi-behavioral approach for a more complete understanding of the overall pathogen transmission risk in animal populations, as well as the cumulative costs of sociality.</p>

Data from: Assessing reproductive behavior important to fisheries management: a case study with red drum, Sciaenops ocellatus

Spawning site selection and reproductive timing affect stock productivity and structure in marine fishes but are poorly understood. Traditionally, stock assessments measure reproductive potential as spawning stock biomass or egg production and do not include other aspects of reproductive behavior. Red drum make an excellent case study to assess these other aspects, as (1) they are highly fecund, pelagic spawners, like most exploited marine fishes; (2) their life cycle is delineated between nursery (estuarine) and adult (coastal and offshore) habitat; and (3) they are managed at these two spatial scales. This study was conducted from August 2012 to December 2013 and integrates data from multiple methods and spatial scales. Aerial surveys were used for large-scale monitoring of aggregations off two known estuarine nursery areas, Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor, Florida, USA. Capture-based sampling in Tampa Bay coastal (n = 2581) and estuarine waters (n = 158) was used to assess reproductive state and to confirm coastal spawning. To assess spatial dynamics, we acoustically tagged two population components in the Tampa Bay system, subadults from the estuary (n = 20) and adults from the coastal spawning site (n = 60). Behavioral plasticity was seen in subadult recruitment to coastal habitat, with some subadults maturing and recruiting before or during the spawning season and others (14 of 20 acoustically tagged fish) recruiting at the end of the 2012 spawning season. Both adults and recruited subadults (n = 29) were consequently detected in the Charlotte Harbor array, 132 km to the south. Spawning-site fidelity to the Tampa Bay spawning site occurred at both the population and individual scales. Aggregations consistently occurred in Tampa Bay coastal waters during the spawning season, and approximately two-thirds of tagged adults returned in the 2013 spawning season. A similar proportion of subadults returned to the Tampa Bay spawning site, exhibiting natal homing. However, these first-time spawners arrived later than repeat spawners and were detected over shorter time periods. This study, and others like it, demonstrates how integrating data from individuals tracked over space and time with more traditional population-based sampling is changing our understanding of ecological processes that affect marine fish productivity and our ability to manage for sustainablity.

Assessing the impact of central and peripheral obstructions on visual behavior: insights from gaze-contingent eye-tracking studies

<p>This dataset is a collection of image stimuli, as well as gaze tracks collected using visual field masks, such as central and peripheral scotoma, in order to assess the way people with visual field loss process visual stimuli in digital environments.</p> <h3><strong>This dataset is structured as follows :</strong></h3> <ul> <li>Stimuli: 125 fullHD images (1920x1080) used during the experiment trials; 4 fullHD images used during the training phase.</li> <li>Trials_metadata: <ul> <li>Psychopy_outputs: various callbacks and logs files from the Psychopy experiment</li> <li>trials_metadata: .csv files containing metadata such as stimuli order and timestamps.</li> </ul> </li> <li>Raw_eyetracking_outputs: subfolders containing the raw .edf files output by the Eyelink 1000+ eye-tracker. .edf files are divided into groups of 25 successive stimuli displayed.</li> <li>Raw_gaze_points: .csv files, containing the raw gaze points locations for each subject, stimulus and mask. Blinks, invalid coordinates and out-of-bounds gaze points are already removed from these files.</li> <li>Fixations: .csv files (one per image per participant) containing eye fixations locations extracted from the raw gaze points using a I-VT algorithm with a saccade velocity threshold of 45 deg/s.</li> </ul> <h2><br><strong>Experiment</strong></h2> <h3>Images</h3> <p>This database consists of 100 images collected from personal collections and various public image datasets, such as the CityScapes and the KITTI-360 datasets, covering a variety of themes, including landscapes, people, actions, and nature.<br>Images had a 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution (FullHD) and were shown on a screen with the same resolution.&nbsp;</p> <h3>Eye-tracking data collection</h3> <p>The stimuli were presented to a group of 37 observers, with normal or corrected-to-normal vision. We used a table-mounted EyeLink 1000 Plus eye-tracker, working at a fixed rate of 1000Hz, with a chin rest to ensure data accuracy. Participants were informed that they would observe images both with and without simulated visual field impairments, and the two types of masks used were described. They were also told that the only task is to view the images freely.&nbsp;</p> <p>To familiarize participants with the different types of masks, four training images (distinct from the trial dataset) were provided in the training phase, with each image presented in the three conditions -- peripheral mask, foveal mask, and control (no mask) -- with varying mask sizes.&nbsp;<br>In the trial phase, stimuli were displayed in a random order, with a randomly generated playlist ensuring no three consecutive stimuli were of the same image. A uniform gray screen was displayed between each stimulus.&nbsp;</p> <p>Viewing distance was set to be 90cm.<br>Eye-tracker calibration was carried out using a 9-point calibration protocol, i.e., 9 points were sequentially and randomly shown on the screen, where the observer should fixate their gaze.&nbsp;<br>Additionally, calibration was performed after every 25 displayed images.</p> <p>Each image was presented to the observers for a 5-second period.</p> <p>Each image in the database was presented to the observers under different conditions :<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; - The image without any obstruction, referred to as the control condition (C).&nbsp;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; - Peripheral mask (P) simulating a tunnel vision, with two circular mask size variations (one individual mask for each eye): 1.5&deg; and 4.5&deg; radius of field of view, referred to as P1 and P2, respectively.&nbsp;<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; - Foveal mask (F) simulating a central scotoma, also with two size variations: 1.5&deg; and 4.5&deg; radius of obstruction, referred to as F1 and F2, in that order.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Blowing in the wind: Experimental assessment of clinging performance and behavior in Anolis lizards during hurricane-force winds

<p>1. Extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, can be ecologically devastating and cause widespread mortality. Recent studies in <em>Anolis</em> lizards report hurricane-induced phenotypic shifts and selection favoring morphological variation related to clinging performance. Although it is difficult to observe organismal responses during extreme events in nature, we can experimentally simulate the high-speed winds associated with hurricanes to evaluate the putative mechanism underlying observed patterns of natural selection.</p> <p>2. In this study, we used two laboratory experiments to better understand the clinging performance and behavior of <em>Anolis</em> lizards when experiencing hurricane-force winds. We assessed the physical ability of lizards when using the combined function of their claws, limbs, toepads, and other traits to resist forces pulling them off a perch. We also evaluated the combination of this physical clinging ability of lizards and their behavioral responses to avoid being blown off a perch during high winds. We assessed behavior that could decrease exposure of lizards to wind and increase their clinging ability.</p> <p>3. Clinging force measurements revealed variation in performance among species and substrates not reflected in clinging times for lizards experiencing hurricane-force winds, revealing the importance of behavior when experiencing high winds. The most arboreal species (<em>A</em>. <em>carolinensis</em>) had substantially longer clinging times on rough substrates compared to the other species, presumably due to its larger toepads for increased clinging as well as its shorter limbs that reduced drag.</p> <p>4. Under high-speed winds, lizards commonly shifted to the more protected leeward side of dowels, especially on broad and rough substrates, presumably to reduce exposure. This reveals how behavior can mediate factors influencing clinging ability during hurricanes and, in conjunction with ecologically relevant variation in morphology and substrate properties, contribute to clinging performance.</p> <p>5. Our experiments reveal that behavior strongly influences clinging performance during high winds beyond that predicted by physical traits alone. Thus, microhabitat selection of perches and the position of a lizard on its perch during a hurricane will likely have important consequences for clinging performance. This may alter how selection acts on morphological traits and influence the susceptibility of different species to these extreme weather events.</p>
