Data from: Searching for diamonds in the apomictic rough: a case study involving Boechera lignifera (Brassicaceae)
The genus Boechera is one of the most difficult species complexes in North America, with about 70 sexual diploids and hundreds of apomictic taxa representing diverse combinations of nearly every known sexual genome. In this study, we set out to clarify the taxonomy of Boechera lignifera, which currently includes a small number of sexual diploid populations in addition to the widespread apomictic diploid upon which the name is based. Using data from cytological studies, microsatellite DNA analyses, geography, and morphology, we demonstrate that the apomictic populations are genetically quite divergent from the sexual diploids. We propose the name Boechera kelseyana to accommodate the sexual diploid taxon, which occurs entirely south of the geographic range of B. lignifera. Boechera kelseyana is consistently separable from B. lignifera based on pollen and seed morphology, the length and proximal orientation of fruiting pedicels, differences in the branching and orientation of trichomes on the lowers stems, and the number of flowers and cauline leaves on unbranched fertile stems.

Analysis 1 : Explanation note: A. STRUCTURE bar plots with the highest likelihood for K = 5, 6, and 8 respectively. Instability was consistently noted across iterations at all values of K. B. An MDS plot demonstrates distinctness in TL-ro in three dimensions and TL-su in two dimensions. Calculations for optimal K were ambiguous and inconsistent, as were clustering patterns with regard to the B. constancei clusters (TL-co, PLSI-co and CD-co), particularly with regard to TL-co. MDS plots do not represent analyses, but are a visual interpretation of the dataset. TL-su and TL-ro are the most distinct and coherent clusters based on allele sharing distance.
Data from: Boechera, a model system for ecological genomics
The selection and development of a study system for evolutionary and ecological functional genomics (EEFG) depends on a variety of factors. Here we present the genus Boechera as an exemplary system with which to address ecological and evolutionary questions. Our focus on Boechera is based on several characteristics: 1) native populations in undisturbed habitats where current environments reflect historical conditions over several thousand years; 2) functional genomics benefitting from its close relationship to Arabidopsis thaliana; 3) inbreeding tolerance enabling development of recombinant inbred lines, near-isogenic lines, and positional cloning; 4) interspecific crosses permitting mapping for genetic analysis of speciation; 5) apomixis (asexual reproduction by seeds) in a genetically tractable diploid; and 6) broad geographic distribution in North America, permitting ecological genetics for a large research community. These characteristics, along with the current sequencing of three Boechera species by the Joint Genome Institute, position Boechera as a rapidly advancing system for EEFG studies.
