Dataset from "How does a warm and low-snow winter impact the snow cover dynamics in a humid and discontinuous boreal forest? Insights from observations and modeling in eastern Canada"

<p>The dataset presented below is described in the publication &ldquo;<em>How does a warm and low-snow winter impact the snow cover dynamics in a humid and discontinuous boreal forest? An observational study in eastern Canada.</em>&rdquo; from Bouchard et al. (submitted) in the journal Hydrology and Earth System Science.</p> <p>The original dataset includes <strong>monitoring data</strong> collected at Montmorency Forest (47.29&deg;N, 71.17&deg;W) from 15 October 2020 to 15 June 2021 (W20-21) and from 15 October 2021 to 15 June 2021 (W21-22) in a medium-size gap, the small-size gap and under the canopy. The study site is a balsam fir &ndash; whit birch stand on a 12&deg; slope of north-east aspect. In the monitoring dataset you can find at the hourly timestep:</p> <ul> <li>Snow depth (cm)</li> <li>Soil temperature at 20 cm, 10 cm and 5 cm below ground surface (&deg;C)</li> <li>Soil-snow interface temperature (&deg;C)</li> <li>Snow temperature every 15 cm from the ground surface (&deg;C)</li> <li>Snow surface temperature (&deg;C)</li> <li>Air temperature (&deg;C)</li> <li>Relative humidity (%)</li> <li>Soil volumetric water content at 15 cm below the ground surface (0 &ndash; 1)</li> </ul> <p>The dataset also includes <strong>snow pit observations</strong> taken at Montmorency Forest during W20-21 and during W21-22. Each winter, four (4) snow pits were dug inside medium-size gaps, small-size gaps and at subcanopy locations. Snow pit measurement dates are presented in Bouchard et al. (submitted). Each snow pit includes the vertical profile of:</p> <ul> <li>Snow stratigraphy</li> <li>Snow temperature</li> <li>Snow density</li> <li>Snow specific surface area (SSA)</li> </ul> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The snow pit height corresponds to the upper boundary of the topmost snow layer in the stratigraphy profile. For density measurements, the height value corresponds to the center of the 3-cm thick box cutter. For the SSA, the value is measured optically at the top of the sample. This value is representative of the top 1 cm of the snow sample, as this is the typical e-folding depth of 1310 nm radiation in snow. Grain type codes for the snowpack stratigraphy correspond to the <em>International Classification for Seasonal Snow </em>(Fierz et al., 2009):</p> <ul> <li>PP: precipitation particles&nbsp;</li> <li>DF: decomposed and fragmented precipitation particles</li> <li>RG: rounded grains</li> <li>FC: faceted crystals</li> <li>FCxr: rounding faceted particles</li> <li>DH: depth hoar</li> <li>MFpc: melt forms &ndash; rounded polycrystals</li> <li>MF: melt forms &ndash; clustered rounded grains</li> <li>MFcr: melt forms &ndash; melt-freeze crusts</li> <li>IF: ice formations</li> </ul>

Data from: Linking resource availability and heterogeneity to understorey species diversity through succession in boreal forest of Canada

Understorey vegetation hosts the majority of species diversity and contributes greatly to ecosystem functioning in natural systems. Although patterns of understorey abundance, species diversity and composition associated with forest stand development are well researched, mechanisms driving these patterns remain largely speculative. We sampled fire origin stands of varying stand ages and overstorey compositions on mesic sites of the boreal forest of Canada and used structural equation modeling (SEM) to link time since fire (stand age), light availability and heterogeneity, substrate heterogeneity and soil nitrogen to understorey vegetation cover and species diversity. The most parsimonious model for total understorey cover showed a positive direct effect of stand age (r = 0.43) and an indirect effect via mean light level (0.18) and shrub cover (-0.11), with a positive total effect (0.50); the percent broadleaf canopy had a direct negative effect (-0.22) and an indirect effect via shrub cover (-0.11). The model for total understorey species richness showed an indirect effect of stand age via mean light (0.24), light heterogeneity (0.10), and substrate heterogeneity (0.07), with a positive total effect (0.52); percent broadleaf canopy had an indirect effect via light heterogeneity (0.09), and substrate heterogeneity (-0.10). Soil nitrogen did not significantly influence either understorey cover or species richness. The models for vascular plants followed similar trends to those for total understorey cover and species richness; however, there was an opposite indirect effect of light heterogeneity for both cover and species richness of non-vascular plants. Shrub cover had positive direct and negative direct and indirect effects on both vascular and non-vascular cover and species richness. Our findings indicate that understorey cover and species diversity are driven by time since disturbance, light availability as influenced by overstorey and shrub layers, but with important additional effects mediated by light and substrate heterogeneity. Non-vascular understorey vegetation is more strongly determined by time since disturbance than vascular vegetation, and negatively affected by broadleaf tree abundance. The overall results highlight the importance of colonization, light availability and heterogeneity, substrate specialization and growth dynamics in determining successional patterns of boreal forest understorey vegetation.

Plot level biomass by components for small black spruce trees growing on the wetlands of the Boreal and Taiga Plains of Canada

<p>Tree mensuration data and biomass component data, collected from destructive sampling of 679 trees (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.10632743), were scalled-up to the plot level, resulting in 58 black spruce boreal wetland plots within the Boreal Plains and Taiga Plains of Canada.&nbsp; This dataset contains plot level biomass by components for small black spruce trees growing on the wetlands of the Boreal and Taiga Plains of Canada.</p> <p>This&nbsp; dataset has been used to develop a new set of yield curves (i.e., total volume as a function of total stand age) as well as novel total volume-to-biomass conversion models to predict stem wood, stem bark, branch, and foliage biomass of the small black spruce trees.&nbsp;</p> <p>The novel equations are key to modelling treed peatlands in the Canadian Model for Peatlands (CaMP) and thus contribute to improving accuracy in modelled C stocks and flux estimates for Canada&rsquo;s treed peatlands.</p>

Individual tree biomass by components for small black spruce trees growing on the wetlands of the Boreal and Taiga Plains of Canada

<p>New tree mensuration data and biomass component data from destructive sampling of 679 trees, were collected at 58 black spruce boreal wetland sites within the Boreal Plains and Taiga Plains of Canada. These data have been used to:</p> <p>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Develop individual small black spruce trees allometric models. These models will focus on relationships between basal and breast height diameter, years-to-breast height, and height as function of basal diameter or breast height diameter, taper equation, and individual tree volume compilation.<br>&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Develop individual small black spruce trees biomass models. These equations will focus on estimating biomass of single trees based on diameters (basal and breast height diameter) and/or height).&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>
