Data from: Historical demography of four gecko species specializing in boulder cave habitat – its implications in the evolutionary dead end hypothesis and conservation

Specialization in narrow ecological niches might not only help species to survive in competitive or unique environments but also contribute to their extermination over evolutionary time. Although the "evolutionary dead end" hypothesis has long been debated, empirical evidence from species with detailed information on niche specialization and evolutionary history is still rare. Here we used a group of four closely related Cnemaspis gecko species that highly depend on granite boulder caves in the Mekong Delta to illuminate the potential impact of ecological specialization on their evolution and population dynamics. Isolated by the unsuitable habitat of a flood plain, these boulder-dwelling geckos are among the most narrowly distributed Squamata species in the world. We applied several coalescence-based approaches combined with the RAD-seq technique to estimate their divergence times, gene flow and demographic fluctuations during the speciation and population differentiation processes. Our results showed long-term population shrinkage in the four geckos and limited gene flow during their divergence. The results suggest that the erosion and fragmentation of the granite boulder hills have had great impacts on these populations' divergences and population declines. We argue that the specialist gecko's habitat specialization has facilitated the fine-scaled speciation in these granite rocky hills; in contrast, specialization might also have pushed these species toward the edge of extinction. Our study also emphasizes the conservation urgency of these vulnerable, cave-dependent geckos.

Howden Hill boulder

Nice big boulder proud above the ground with what seems like eight cup-marks, of different sizes, on its top surface. But is it (I hear you ask) a true example of prehistoric rock art? The depressions have clearly been subject to much erosion and weathering by rain, wind and frost, possibly over a great number of years. All traces of their human origins (such as peck marks) would of course have disappeared and there are no rings around any of the cups or other additions that would prove a human was involved in at least their initial formation. There are, however, good examples of prehistoric cup-marked boulders in the vicinity, arguably better preserved under turf. Bronze Age cairns are nearby. The alternative view of their formation is one of geology and weathering. Fluting and basins are often seen on exposed sandstone, particularly on upturned boulders and standing stones. What is the effect of weathering on known rock art: over-deepening and enlargement of existing hollows, or a smoothing of the surface? Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

Non-exhaustive record of locations of Shap granite (Sg) boulders and Shap microgranite (Sa) clasts in the Lake District region, UK.

<p><strong><em>Non-exhaustive record (~10,000) of locations of Shap granite (Sg) boulders and Shap microgranite (Sa) clasts. Search area was limited from: in the NE, the eastern margin of Gaythorn Plain; in the NW, Shap Pink Quarry; in the SE, Farleton Fell and; in the SW, the locale of Kendal (approximate coordinates of the study area: NE: 54.499850&deg; -2.519770&deg;; NW: 54.468401&deg; -2.685596&deg;; SE: &nbsp;54.226849&deg; &nbsp;-2.519770&deg;; SW: 54.227170&deg; &nbsp;-2.770000&deg;)</em></strong></p> <p>The northern limit to the study area was selected to exclude the northern plume, which disrupted the earlier eastern plume over Crosby Ravensworth Fell.&nbsp; The western limit was selected to enclose the known western limit of the Mint plume. The eastern limit was selected to enclose the known eastern limit of the Lune plume.&nbsp; The southern limit was selected to enclose the broadening of the Mint&nbsp;plume in the vicinity of Kendal.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <p>A comprehensive field survey was made of lower Borrowdale and northwards.&nbsp; The western Sg plume down the Mint valley south to Kendal, and the area of Lune Gorge, south of Dillicar, were surveyed cursorily, mainly checking published locations and adding additional locations encountered during this exercise.&nbsp; Prior reports for the Mint valley show a well-defined narrow plume, so to reduce the workload, a more complete record of locations has yet to be compiled.&nbsp; Similarly, from prior reports, boulder locations are few in the region around Kendal and east to the southern portion of the Lune valley and the overall distribution, before clearances, was recorded adequately in the 19th C.</p>

Camas Luinie - cup marked boulder (ScRAP 2241)

A small road travels seven miles inland from Loch Duich near the village of Dornie and ends at the small settlement of Camas-Luinie. This stone lies in an enclosed area above the road just before the village is reached (NG 94496 29091). It is intensely covered in cup marks over part of its surface. I counted just over 90, although it becomes difficult to distinguish actual cups from the natural surface. Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

dry creekbed boulder

Made with 3df zephyr free, using 50 images. I discovered this large rock in a dried-up seasonal creek about a mile from home. I had a camera on me, and decided to try to scan it. this is by far the largest object I have ever tried with zephyr, and it took a lot of fiddling around with the controls to get a usable file size. However, I'm quite pleased with the results, and plan to try some other larger objects in the near future! Source: Objaverse 1.0 / Sketchfab

UGA Petroglyph Boulder

This is one of two boulders with petroglyphs on dispaly in front of Baldwin Hall on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens. The large, granite boulder modeled here has been known to settlers in[ Forsyth County](http://abob.libs.uga.edu/bobk/rockpet.html) since around the mid-19th century. This stone was gifted to the University in 1963 and has been the subject of much speculation since. There is no direct knowledge of what the symbols represent, though it is believed that they may depict constellations. Today, you can visit the beautiful UGA campus and see these petroglyphs for yourself. If you happen to be in Florida, keep an eye out for our [Archaeology Works: Stars](http://fpan.us/workshops/archworks.php) program which features this fascinating object. Loch Vale Watershed Research Project site, station Boulder County, CO (FIPS 8013), study of county area in units of squareKilometers on a yearly timescale

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Loch Vale Watershed Research Project (LVW) contains county area measurements in squareKilometers units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.
