Mean annual Secchi depth measurements in the period starting in 1969 provide a measure of water column transparency in the CalCOFI inshore and offshore areas, 1969 - 2004.
The Secchi depth provides a measure of water turbidity. Measurements are made as part of the California Fisheries Cooperative Investigations (CalCOFI). Secchi depth is measured on each station on each cruise. The mean annual is obtained by averaging stations over time and at stations defined as either inshore or offshore.

Cruise measurements (temperature, salinity, density, chlorophyll, C14, phosphate, silicate, nitrate, nitrite) collected from CTD casts aboard CalCOFI cruises in the California Current, and averaged annually and by cruise, from 1984 - 2019 (updated periodically).

Measurements were made of iron (Fe) and the potential for phytoplankton iron limitation on CalCOFI survey cruises (2002-2004) in coastal transition zones of the southern California Current System. This is a weak upwelling regime that is relatively low in nutrients and chlorophyll. The majority of seawater samples from the mixed layer were collected using a pole sampler, others were collected using a trace metal clean Teflon pump system. Profiles for dissolved Fe analysis were collected using GO Flo bottles attached to a synthetic line and the seawater samples were filtered under ultra-pure conditions. Dissolved Fe was measured using an FeLume flow injection analysis system. Changes in phytoplankton (Chla response to Fe+) and nutrient parameters upon iron addition were also investigated.

Based on twelve quarterly cruises over three years, the relative importance and absolute biomass of phytoplankton retained on an 8 mu m-pore membrane filter increased as the depth of the nitricline decreased, even though biomass of macrozooplankton (potential grazers) also increased as the nitricline shoaled. Field observations are carried out to gain understanding of cetacean ecology and habitat. Visual monitoring for cetaceans has been conducted on quarterly CalCOFI cruises since July 2004 using standard line-transect protocol (Burnham et al. 1980;Buckland et al. 1993; Barlow 1995). Visual observers watch during daylight hours, when weather permits (Beaufort sea states 0 to 5 and visibility greater than 1 nautical mile) and while the ship transits between CalCOFI stations.
Size group (pico, nano, micro) and group total carbon estimates from cell counts via epifluorescent microscopy (EPI) of heterotrophic and autotrophic plankton from CCE-CalCOFI Augmented cruises in the California Current System, 2004 - 2011 (ongoing).

Samples to estimate the nano- and microplankton (0.2-2.0-µm and 2.0-20-µm size, respectively) are collected at various depths via Niskin bottles, preserved, stained, and filtered onto a membrane filter and mounted on a glass microscope slide aboard the quarterly CalCOFI survey cruises (since 2004, ongoing). Slides are then frozen at -80°C for subsequent imaging and analysis in the laboratory onshore. Carbon biomass is computed from cell biovolumes.

The data included in this dataset are bird and mammal observations from aboard research cruises. There are six tables of data: a transect log and observation log pairing for each of the three types of cruises. California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) cruises are conducted quarterly off the coast of southern and central California. National Marine Fisheries (NMFS) cruises are a part of the Rockfish Recruitment Survey off the coast of southern and central California. Data were also collected aboard North Pacific Continuous Plankton Recorder (NPCPR) cruises from June 2002 through May 2006. Observations of birds and mammals include both number and behavior in addition to temporal and spatial information recorded along the cruise transect. Data are collected in order to research the interdependent aspects of the marine environment, including the effects of natural and human based climate change, and the broad implications and influences of ocean currents, weather patterns, fishing practices and coastal development on marine food webs and ecosystem processes. A team of two observers search for cetaceans in a 90 degree field of view from the bow to beam of the ship, alternating between 18 and 50 power binoculars and the naked eye.
