Model and observational data for Morrison et al. (2020) JAMES paper entitled "Confronting the challenge of modeling cloud and precipitation microphysics"
This dataset was used to generate plots for a paper conditionally accepted in the Journal of Advances in Modeling Earth Systems (JAMES), an AGU journal. It comprises four different data sources: WRF simulations, radar observations, an idealized steady-state column model called the Bayesian Observationally-Constrained Statistical Scheme (BOSS), and idealized column rainshaft model using bin microphysics. The WRF simulations consist of output from a set of 11 runs using either bulk or bin microphysics schemes. The version of WRF is V3.9.1. To limit storage requirements, we have only saved a single time-slice of output at hour 6 of the simulations, along with the namelist.input file to generate these runs. The observational data are gridded and rotated composite NEXRAD reflectivity measurements from central Oklahoma. BOSS model output consists of microphysical parameter probability density functions and profiles of (as described in the meta-file for these data). The idealized bin microphysics rainshaft model output consists of profiles of drop mean size, reflectivity factor, precipitation rate, and drop concentration at two different time slices (described in the meta-data file for these data). We are requesting these data be added to the managed NCAR repository so they may be accessible to the community per AGU publication policy and in accordance with a U.S. DOE grant that partially supported this work.

<p>This is the video supplement for the manuscript "The impact of mesh size and microphysics scheme on the representation of mid-level clouds in the ICON model in hilly and complex terrain". It includes compiled videos from allsky cameras at two different field sites (CLOUDLAB (hilly terrain, HT) and CROSSINN (complex terrain, CT)) for in total four case studies (named by their dates). For each case study, we compiled a video of the cloud cover from the model for the 1 km and 65 m resolution, both with a one-moment (1M) and two-moment (2M) microphysics scheme. </p> <p> </p>

GPM GROUND VALIDATION UND CITATION CLOUD MICROPHYSICS GCPEX V2
The GPM Ground Validation UND Citation Cloud Microphysics GCPEx dataset includes instrument measurements of cloud microphysics, state of atmosphere parameters. bulk aerosols, three-dimensional winds, and turbulence. These measurements were taken by the University of North Dakota's (UND) Cessna Citation aircraft, an in situ platform used during the GCPEx campaign. The GPM Ground Validation UND Citation Cloud Microphysics GCPEx data are stored as a separate file for each flight, including both a primary file containing direct and derived parameters, and raw data for each cloud instrument aboard the Citation. This dataset contains measurements collected across 12 data missions from January 19, 2012 through February 24, 2012. Navigation files for this dataset were updated July 2015.
NAMMA CLOUD MICROPHYSICS (CAPS-PIP) V1
The NAMMA Cloud Microphysics (CAPS-PIP) dataset consists of particle size distributions from the Clouds, Aerosol and Preciptaition Spectrometer (CAPS) and the Precipitaiton Imaging Probe (PIP) from August 19, 2006 to September 12, 2006. These instruments yield precipitation, hydrometeor and aerosol sizes ranging from 0.55 - 100 microns. Data is in the form of images and ascii tables. These data files were generated during support of the NASA African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (NAMMA) campaign, a field research investigation sponsored by the Science Mission Directorate of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). This mission was based in the Cape Verde Islands, 350 miles off the coast of Senegal in west Africa. Commencing in August 2006, NASA scientists employed surface observation networks and aircraft to characterize the evolution and structure of African Easterly Waves (AEWs) and Mesoscale Convective Systems over continental western Africa, and their associated impacts on regional water and energy budgets.
