Prairie manure application impacts on floral abundance, plant growth, plant community structure, insect and spider community abundance and activity density in experimental plots in Ames, Iowa (2021-2022).

This dataset contains results from a two-year field experiment at Iowa State University’s Horticulture Research Station to evaluate the effects of dairy manure application on native prairie plant and insect communities. We established replicated 4 m² plots across two field types, an established tallgrass prairie and a tilled crop field, and applied four manure treatments (weekly, biweekly, once per season, and control) using liquid slurry from a local dairy farm. Plant responses were monitored through weekly measurements of mortality, ground cover, floral abundance, plant height, and visual obstruction. Insect communities were sampled biweekly using vacuum suction for foliage and flower visitors and pitfall traps for ground-dwelling arthropods. Collected insects were identified to order, with Hymenoptera and Carabidae further resolved to family or genus.

Virgin Islands National Park: Coral Reef: Decadal-scale changes in community structure from 1987 to 2011

These time series data sample percent cover of Scleractinian corals by genus measured from photo quadrats. Percent cover is given for each quadrat, each site, each year from 1987 to 2011. Counts of juvenile corals conducted in situ and small colonies less than 4 cm diameter are pooled from all sites. Supplementary data include in situ seawater temperature daily mean from 1989 to 2011. These data were used to create the figures in Edmunds, P.J., 2013, Decadal-scale changes in the community structure of coral reefs in St. John, US Virgin Islands, Marine ecology Progress Series. doi:10.3354/meps10424

This dataset contains a summary of plant species composition and abundance data from thinleaf alder sites along the Tanana River floodplains in 2006. This includes stem counts by species (or genus) for all woody plants less then 2m in height (both separated by dbh size class and combined), stem counts by species for all woody plants greater then 2m in height, percent cover of each forb and graminoid species, mosses, and lichens, and percent of bare ground. The presence or absence of moose and snowshoe hare feces are also indicated.

A multi-scaled approach to evaluating the fish community structure within southern Appalachian streams, 2011

There is considerable uncertainty regarding the relative roles of stream habitat, landscape characteristics, and interspecific interactions in structuring stream fish assemblages. Thus, I evaluated the relative importance of environmental characteristics and species interactions, at local and landscape scales, on fish occupancy within the upper Little Tennessee River basin, Georgia, and North Carolina. Using a quadrat sample design, fishes were collected at 525 channel units among 48 study reaches during two consecutive years. I evaluated the relative support for the influence of local- and landscape-scale factors on fish occupancy using multi-scaled,hierarchical, multi-species occupancy models.

Community structure of aquatic vertebrates and macroinvertebrates in relation to hydrologic variables in the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park, Florida USA: Ongoing since 2012

The purpose of this project is to characterize the community structure of aquatic fauna (macroinvertebrates and fishes) and floating mats (including periphyton) across the heterogenous landscape of the NE Shark River Slough in Everglades NP. The community structure (abundance, biomass, and species composition) of floating mat, emergent vascular plants, fishes, and macroinvertebrates, and the spatial distribution of the latter in relation to hydrology, are among the key performance measures targeted for monitoring. The aim of our study is to provide a baseline characterization of these parameters so that the impact of future management activities (e.g., Modified Water Deliveries and Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) can be assessed. The study area is sampled during the late wet season (September through November) to capture data when all sites are innundated with water and aquatic animal standing stocks are typically at their maximum. We document landscape-scale patterns in the NE Shark River Slough from this comprehensive sampling.

MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Community structure outdoor flume data in support of Edmunds 2019 Marine Biology

This dataset contains data in support of Edmunds, P.J., S.S. Doo, R.C. Carpenter, 'Changes in coral reef community structure in response to year-long incubations under contrasting pCO2 regimes', Marine Biology, 2019, doi:10.1007/s00227-019-3540-2. Here, the effects of ocean acidification (OA) on back reef communities from Mo'orea, French Polynesia (17.492S, 149.826W), were tested from 12 November 2015 to 16 November 2016 in outdoor flumes maintained at various mean pCO2 levels. Change in mass and percent cover were recorded monthly. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2018). This work represents a contribution of the Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) LTER Site.
