Demographics of high marsh consumers from Breder trap transect collections in tidal creeks associated with long term fertilization experiments, Rowley, MA
At PIE, mummichog (Fundulus heteroclitus) use the spring-cycle high tides to access the flooded high marsh platform and eat invertebrate prey, coupling the high marsh and aquatic creek food webs by gathering energy produced on the high marsh and making it available to the aquatic food web. Changes in the geomorphology of saltmarsh creek edges greatly influence the survival, biomass, and resource use of mummichog populations. Here, we capture animals using Breder traps to quantify the communities accessing the high marsh at night during one of these high tides in July 2018 across 3 PIE creeks known to present different geomorphologic patterns in their low marsh zones. These data can be used for the assessment of the impact of low marsh geomorphology on consumer communities in PIE marshes. Mummichog captured in these Breder traps were further analyzed for gut content (LTE-TIDE-BrederTrap-GutContents). These data were included in part of the study “Habitat decoupling via saltmarsh creek geomorphology alters connection between spatially-coupled food webs” (Lesser et al. 2020) and were a portion of an MBL REU project.
SBC LTER: Beach: CO₂ flux, wrack subsidies, invertebrate community, and consumer respiration rates for Channel Islands sandy beaches
These data result from surveys of 14 sandy beach sites on four of California’s Channel Islands from 2016 to 2018. We quantified marine macrophyte wrack subsidies, macroinvertebrates, beach physical parameters, and sediment CO2 flux at each site in order to elucidate the role of marine wrack subsidies and wrack consumers on sandy beach sediment CO2 flux. We also measured the respiration rates of the six most common wrack consumer species in the laboratory. Data are contained in two tables: 1) Mean wrack cover, invertebrate community composition (species richness, abundance, and biomass), beach physical parameters, and sediment CO2 flux, and 2) respiration rates and biomass of each replicate individual for each of the six species.

<p>The agroBRIDGES Good Practices (GPs) is a compilation of 51 Good Practices prepared by TEAGASC in collaboration with other agroBRIDGES project partners, where the Good Practices, success cases and opportunities related to Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) across Europe are highlighted. Dataset on consumer acceptance of policy measures for sustainable food consumption
<p>This data was obtained from an online survey conducted with Swiss participants from the German-speaking parts of Switzerland. The survey was conducted in February 2023. Participants were recruited through a professional panel provider and quotas were used for age and gender. The final sample contained 453 respondents. In the first part of the survey, respondents provided basic sociodemographic information and reported how often they consumed meat and dairy products. In the second part, their knowledge regarding the environmental impact of food was assessed using an existing scale by Hartmann et al. (2021). Next, respondents indicated for 19 different policy measures how much they agreed with each of them. Finally, respondents answered several questions assessing their health consciousness and environmental attitudes using existing scales. The survey can be used and adapted to different contents, aiming to investigate public acceptance of policy measures for sustainable food consumption.</p>
Dataset on consumers' perception of different types of sustainability levies, Swiss agriculture and farmers and willingness to choose suboptimal potatoes in different settings
<p><em><span>This dataset includes survey data from 481 Swiss consumers. Data were collected in the German-speaking parts of Switzerland in February and March 2024. The survey includes three independent main parts. </span></em></p> <p><em><span>In a first part, we collected qualitative and quantitative data on participants’ perception of Swiss agriculture and farmers. Specifically, participants’ trust in crop and livestock production farmers and their perceived knowledge about production methods and their affect towards farmers was assessed. </span></em></p> <p><em><span>In a second part, we collected quantitative data on participants’ preference for different sustainability levies. For this, six different products were used (i.e., fresh/processed vegetables, dairy, and meat). For each of these six products, participants were shown four levy options from which they had to choose the one that they found most appealing. For vegetables, the options were: (A) reduction of risks related to plant protection products, (B) more support for local farmers, (C) support for environmental sustainability, and (D) sustainability projects in general. For the animal products, option (A) was an increase in animal welfare, whilst options (B), (C) and (D) were the same as for the vegetable products.</span></em></p> <p><em><span>In a third part, we collected qualitative and quantitative data on participants preferences for suboptimal or optimal potatoes. Here, a 2 × 2 experimental design (setting × information) was used. This means that participants were presented with either a supermarket or farm shop setting and with or without food waste information. Participants then chose between two potatoes: optimal potato A, suboptimal potato B, or neither. Both potatoes were equally expensive.</span></em></p>

From these, we calculated species energetic balances as net photosynthesis-to-respiration ratio (P/R<sub>r</sub>) for resources, or as ingestion-to-respiration ratio (I/R<sub>c</sub>) for consumers, using predicted values of each (per capita) rate from the models. We used energetic balances as an indicator of how species respond to increasing temperatures, defining intraspecific energetic mismatches when the energetic balance decreases.</p> <p>Second, we inferred interspecific thermal mismatches (inter-TM) by comparing individual energetic balances for both consumer-resource pairs, and identified the thermal mismatch regions, where: 1) trends of energetic balances contrast between the interacting species; and 2) both species reduce their energetic balance with increasing temperature. The inter-TMs were used to increase our qualitative understanding on the outcomes of thermal dependencies of interaction strength.</p> <p>Third, we calculated the natural logarithm of the consumer-resource energetic balance for each interacting pair as the ratio between consumer energetic balance and the resource energetic balance to get qualitative predictions on the trends of interaction strength with temperature.</p> <p>Finally, we measured experimentally thermal dependencies of interaction strength for each consumer-resource pair and verified if our predictions using the thermal mismatches fitted the trends of interaction strengths across temperatures.</p>

Compiled long-term community composition datasets of primary producers and consumers in both freshwater and terrestrial communities
This data package consists of two files to study long-term changes in communities across a range of systems (freshwater and terrestrial) and organism types (from short-lived (sub annual) to long-lived species) that are both primary producers and consumers. We compiled many datasets from publicly available archives (41 datasets are from 14 LTER sites). All datasets must have had a measure of species level abundance to calculate more derived community ecological metrics beyond species richness. These data can be used to study community dynamics over space and time.
CSM09 Small mammal host-parasite sampling data associated with the Consume herbivore exclusion plots across two burned and native-grazed watersheds at Konza Prairie
Data set contains summaries of the number of individuals of each species of small mammal captured (relative abundance) on each trapping grid. Each record contains date, treatment, grid, trap station, species, specimen number, recapture status, specimen disposition, external body measurements (where applicable), reproductive information, and miscellaneous associated comments. These sampling records are based on nightly captures during one 4-night trapping period in fall (October concurrent with annual bison roundup activites) for each of 4 permanent trapping grids established on two fire/grazing treatments (two grids per treatment). These treatments are both grazed by native grazers (bison) and include one treatment burned annually (N1A) and one treatment burned every 4 years (N4B). In each treatment, sampling grids are arranged as 5 x 10 permanent stakes spaced 10m apart and labeled numerically between 1-50 for grid A and 51-100 for grid B. One grid per treatment (grid A) is sampled using capture-mark-release methods and the other grid in each treatment (grid B) is sampled using specimen removal and subsequent whole body processing and curation.

Data to support "delta13C and delta15N values from a mesocosm experiment showing sea urchins mediate the availability of kelp detritus to benthic consumers"
The purple sea urchin Strongylocentrotus purpuratus is an important herbivore and detritivore in southern California giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) forests that grow on shallow rocky reefs (~3-20m depth) off southern California, including Santa Barbara where this study was done. To investigate the shredder activity of purple urchins, we assembled communities of common detritivores and suspension feeders from local reefs in mesocosms. Three species of brittle stars (Ophiopteris papillosa, Ophioplocus esmarki, and Ophiothrix spiculata), one vermetid gastropod (Thylacodes squamigerus), two barnacles (Chthamalus sp. and Megabalanus californicus), one polychaete worm (Chaetopterus sp.), and three sea cucumbers (Cucumaria piperata, Pachythyone rubra, and Cucumaria salma) were collected from the seafloor of local kelp forests at 5-15m depth in the Santa Barbara Channel. Ten of each species were placed in each of six 50 L (51x38x27 cm) flow-through unfiltered seawater tanks, each containing two concrete bricks for hard substrate on top of 3 cm of sand. Because sea urchins are highly mobile, capable of bulldozing other occupants, we isolated them above the experimental communities on plastic mesh (1cm). Mesh dividers were secured horizontally across each mesocosm 16 cm above the bottom. Ten individuals of each consumer species, along with 2-3 blades, totaling 47.3 g (±1.2 SE), of isotopically labeled kelp (see below) were placed on the floor of each tank, below the divider. On top of the mesh divider, we placed an additional 229.8 g (±6.1 SE) of enriched kelp blades, and in half of the tanks, 10 adult urchins (total mass 343.3 g ±1.3 SE) per tank. The kelp below the mesh ensured that the detritivores had direct access to degrading kelp detritus regardless of the urchin treatment, similar to the situation in the kelp forest, allowing us to more clearly ascertain the degree to which the detritivores were dependent on urchins for kelp detritus assimilation. SBC LTER: Land Ocean Reef: Carbon, Nitogen and Hydrogen isotopes for evaluating food sources for subtidal consumers, 2009-2010
Potentially important food sources to consumers on shallow subtidal reefs include phytoplankton-dominated seston, kelp-derived detritus, and for locations adjacent to sources of freshwater runoff, terrestrially-derived material. The SBC LTER is using stable carbon, nitrogen and deuterium isotope ratio analysis to evaulate the relative contribution of these sources to reef food webs. We collect seasonal samples from five core SBCLTER research reefs (Arroyo Hondo, Naples, Arroyo Burro, Goleta bay and Carpinteria), and areas adjacent. We routinely collect several types of samples: from giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera), red, brown and green algae, terrestrial material (Oak leaves), stream, sediment and ocean water particulate organic material, and a benthic polychaete worm (Diopatra). This information will be used to evaluate whether these isotopic values differ enough from one another to permit the use of mixing models to estimate the contribution of each source to the reef food web.
