Comparing and Combining Existing and Emerging Data Collection and Modeling Strategies in Support of Signal Control Optimization and Management (Project M2)

For decades, traffic signal management agencies have used signal timing optimization tools combined with fine-tuning of signal timing based on field observations in their updates of time-of-day signal timing plans. These traditional signal optimization methods and tools use very limited amount of data and depend on default values in the signal timing optimization/simulation tools to estimate network performance under different signal optimization strategies. In recent years, new data collection technologies are emerging including high resolution controller data, more advanced detection technologies such as video image detection that are based on vehicle tracking and possible integration with microwave detectors, automatic-vehicle based identification technologies, third party crowdsourcing data, connected vehicles, and connected automated vehicles data. The objective of the proposed study is to propose methods and algorithms to combine data collected from existing and emerging sources with enhanced models and optimization algorithms to optimize and manage signal operations. The results from applying the developed methods and algorithms will be compared with traditional signal timing and optimization methods currently used by transportation agencies.

DragonDrop: passive dynamics and control strategies of aerial righting in the dragonfly
Dragonflies perform dramatic aerial manoeuvres when hunting prey or chasing rivals but glide leisurely with wings virtually fixed. This makes dragonflies a great system to explore how to minimize the trade-off between manoeuvrability and stability. We challenged the dragonfly by dropping it from selected inverted attitudes and digitised the 6-degrees-of-freedom aerial recovery kinematics via custom motion capture techniques. From these kinematic data we then performed rigid-body inverse dynamics to reconstruct the forces and torques involved in the righting behaviour. We found that inverted dragonflies typically recover themselves with the shortest rotation from the initial body inclination. Additionally, they exhibited a strong tendency to pitch up with their head leading out of the manoeuvre. Surprisingly, anaesthetised dragonflies could also complete the aerial righting. Such passive righting disappears in recently dead dragonflies but can be partially recovered by waxing their wings to mimic the wing posture of the anesthetised dragonflies. Our inverse dynamics model and wind tunnel experiments support the idea that certain wing postures readily provide stability and may explain the dragonfly's rotational preference. This work demonstrates for the first time that aerodynamically stable body configuration exists in gliding insects, and an active insect can leverage this passive stability as needed.
Data from: Human movement, cooperation, and the effectiveness of coordinated vector control strategies
Vector-borne disease transmission is often typified by highly focal transmission and influenced by movement of hosts and vectors across different scales. The ecological and environmental conditions (including those created by humans through vector control programmes) that result in metapopulation dynamics remain poorly understood. The development of control strategies that would most effectively limit outbreaks given such dynamics is particularly urgent given the recent epidemics of dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses. We developed a stochastic, spatial model of vector-borne disease transmission, allowing for movement of hosts between patches. Our model is applicable to arbovirus transmission by Aedes aegypti in urban settings and was parametrized to capture Zika virus transmission in particular. Using simulations, we investigated the extent to which two aspects of vector control strategies are affected by human commuting patterns: the extent of coordination and cooperation between neighbouring communities. We find that transmission intensity is highest at intermediate levels of host movement. The extent to which coordination of control activities among neighbouring patches decreases the prevalence of infection is affected by both how frequently humans commute and the proportion of neighbouring patches that commits to vector surveillance and control activities. At high levels of host movement, patches that do not contribute to vector control may act as sources of infection in the landscape, yet have comparable levels of prevalence as patches that do cooperate. This result suggests that real cooperation among neighbours will be critical to the development of effective pro-active strategies for vector-borne disease control in today's commuter-linked communities.
Data from: Plant economic strategies of grassland species control soil carbon dynamics through rhizodeposition
1. The plant economics spectrum is increasingly recognized as a major determinant of plant species effects on terrestrial ecosystem functioning related to carbon cycling. However, the role of plant economic strategies in the effects of living root activity on soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics through rhizodeposition remains unexplored, despite SOC being the largest terrestrial carbon pool. 2. Using a continuous 13C-labeling method allowing partitioning of plant and soil sources to carbon fluxes and pools, we studied here the linkages between plant economic strategies and SOC cycling processes in a 'common garden' greenhouse experiment. It includes a panel of 12 grassland species selected along a gradient of economic traits and belonging to three functionnal groups (C3 grasses, forbs and legumes). 3. All species induced an acceleration of native SOC mineralization but this rhizosphere priming effect (RPE) substantially differed across species and varied eleven-fold by the end of the experiment (from +26 to +295 % relative to unplanted soil). Interspecific variation in RPE was primarily linked to plant photosynthetic activity associated to species economic strategies of light and CO2 resource acquisition and processing. Fast-growing acquisitive species, such as legumes, featured large RPE, in relation with their high canopy photosynthesis coupled to high leaf photosynthetic capacity and large net primary productivity allocated aboveground. This large RPE was further associated with high root metabolic activity, rhizodeposition and soil microbial activity. In contrast, fine-root growth and economic traits related to soil resource foraging ability were poor predictors of RPE. 4. The formation of new root-derived SOC varied nine-fold across species and was similarly positively related to the net primary productivity allocated aboveground. Fast-growing acquisitive species with a high photosynthetic activity induced a disproportionately large RPE relative to SOC formation. 5. Synthesis. Overall, our study demonstrates that rhizodeposition is a major mechanism through which plant economic strategies of grassland species control soil carbon dynamics. Acquisitive versus conservative species were associated with high versus low rates of photosynthesis and rhizodeposition, in turn leading to fast versus slow SOC turnover. This emphasizes the importance of considering rhizosphere processes for understanding plant species effects on soil biogeochemistry.
Data from: Genetic structure of introduced American mink (Neovison vison) in Patagonia: colonisation insights and implications for control and management strategies
Context: Biological invasions have caused dramatic changes in native biodiversity and ecosystem function. Studies of genetic variation and evolutionary changes are useful for understanding population dynamics during biological invasions, and shed light on management, prevention and restoration strategies. Aims: This study aimed to investigate the structure and genetic variability of American mink (Neovison vison), an invasive species in southern South America, introduced for fur farming in the 1930s. Methods: Samples from 153 mink were obtained from 12 locations in southern Chile to sequence the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region and to genotype 11 polymorphic microsatellite loci. Key results: The highest mtDNA diversity was detected in Puerto Cisnes, suggesting multiple introductions and/or the most probable area where mink was first introduced. The latter is also supported by microsatellite data, because a high percentage of individuals from different locations were assigned to this location. All other locations showed low or no mtDNA diversity, possibly due to founder effect. The results also indicate marked population structure, with three genetic clusters coincident with the main historical introduction points, with low dispersal among them. Conclusions: The results suggest that control strategies for American mink in southern Chile should be concentrated on these three genetically differentiated management units, and particularly on source populations and locations with low effective population size and restricted connectivity. Implications: Genetic approaches have been used for the management of numerous alien species worldwide. Recommendations delivered here for American mink control could also be implemented in other regions and for other invasive species with similar genetic diversity distribution and connectivity.
