The Global and National Energy Systems Techno-Economic (GNESTE) Database: Cost and performance data for electricity generation and storage technologies
<p>Here, we present a database which collates historical, current, and future cost and performance data and assumptions for the six most prominent electricity generation technologies; coal, gas, hydroelectric, nuclear, solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power, which together accounted for over 92% of installed generation capacity in 2022. In addition, we provide the same data for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS), regarded as critical to the integration of variable renewables such as wind and solar PV.</p> <p>The data are global in scope but with regional and national specificity, covers the years 2015 through to 2050, and span 5510 datapoints from 56 sources. The database enables modellers to select and justify model input data and provides a benchmark for comparing assumptions and projections to other sources across the literature to validate model inputs and outputs. It is designed to be easily updated with new sources of data, ensuring its utility, comprehensiveness, and broad applicability in future.</p>

Elevated energy costs of biomass production in mitochondrial-respiration deficient Saccharomyces cerevisiae

Data bundle uploaded by Pranas Grigaitis, p.grigaitis [at] vu.nl.</p> <p><em>Abstract</em></p> <p>Microbial growth requires energy for maintaining the existing cells and producing components for the new ones. Microbes therefore invest a considerable amount of their resources into proteins needed for energy harvesting. Growth in different environments is associated with different energy demands for growth of yeast <em>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</em>, although the cross-condition differences remain poorly characterized. Furthermore, a direct comparison of the energy costs for the biosynthesis of the new biomass across conditions is not feasible experimentally; computational models, on the contrary, allow comparing the optimal metabolic strategies and quantify the respective costs of energy and nutrients. Thus in this study, we used a resource allocation model of <em>S. cerevisiae</em> to compare the optimal metabolic strategies between different conditions. We found that <em>S. cerevisiae</em> with respiratory-impaired mitochondria required additional energetic investments for growth, while growth on amino acid-rich media was not affected. Amino acid supplementation in anaerobic conditions also was predicted to rescue the growth reduction in mitochondrial respiratory shuttle-deficient mutants of <em>S. cerevisiae</em>. Collectively, these results point to elevated costs of resolving the redox imbalance caused by <em>de novo</em> biosynthesis of amino acids in mitochondria. To sum up, our study provides an example of how resource allocation modeling can be used to address and suggest explanations to open questions in microbial physiology.</p>

Dataset for Metabolic Cost Calculations of Gait using Musculoskeletal Energy Models, a Comparison Study
<p>This data set contains raw and processed data of gait analysis experiments of level and inclined walking at two speeds for 12 participants. The slopes were uphill and downhill with 8% incline. The raw data contains the output of the force plates and marker data, as well as raw measurements from an K4B2 system. Mat files are processed data: measured metabolic rate, and measured and calculated metabolic cost, as well as kinetic and kinematic data of an averaged gait cycle: joint angles, velocities and moments, ground reaction forces, muscle activation, contractile element length and stimulation, and the duration of the gait cycle.</p>

Membrane lipid metabolism, heat shock response, and energy costs mediate the interaction between acclimatization and heat hardening response
<p>Thermal plasticity on different timescales, including acclimation/acclimatization and heat hardening response – a rapid adjustment for thermal tolerance after a nonlethal thermal stress, can interact on organisms to improve the resilience to thermal stress. However, little is known about the physiological mechanisms mediating this interaction. To investigate underpinnings of heat hardening responses after acclimatization in warm season, we measured thermal tolerance plasticity, compared transcriptomic and metabolomic changes after heat hardening at 33 or 37<sup>o</sup>C followed by recovery of 3 h or 24 h in an intertidal bivalve <i>Sinonovacula constricta</i>. The clams showed explicit heat hardening responses after acclimatization in warm season. The higher inducing temperature (37<sup>o</sup>C) caused a less effective heat hardening effect than the inducing temperature that was closer to seasonal maximum temperature (33<sup>o</sup>C). Metabolomic analysis highlighted the elevated contents of membrane glyceropholipids in all heat hardened clams, which may help to maintain structure and function of membrane. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) tended to be up-regulated after heat hardening at 37<sup>o</sup>C but not at 33<sup>o</sup>C, indicating that there was no complete dependency of heat hardening effects on up-regulated HSPs. Enhanced energy metabolism and decreased energy reserves were observed after heat hardening at 37<sup>o</sup>C, suggesting more energy costs during exposure to higher inducing temperature which may restrict heat hardening effects. These results highlighted the mediating role of membrane lipid metabolism, heat shock responses and energy costs in the interaction of heat hardening response and seasonal acclimatization, and benefit the mechanistic understanding of evolutionary change and thermal plasticity during global climate change.</p>
