Empowering Communities in Cybersecurity: Building Capacity Together for Digital Security Workshop
<p>This event is part of our broader research objective to develop a cybersecurity capacity building framework for rural communities in the Indo-Pacific region. Funded and supported by the Oceania Cyber Security Centre (OCSC), based in Melbourne, Australia.</p> <p>The OCSC, a not-for-profit organisation jointly owned by eight Victorian universities, specialises in cybersecurity assessment, evaluation, and research. Their focus on building regional capabilities encompasses national cybersecurity capacity assessments, independent evaluations, localized research, and educational programs. </p> <p>This workshop, held at Claro Hotel on February 22, 2024, and collaboratively organised with Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Universitas Hasanuddin, Universitas Negeri Makassar, and Politeknik Negeri Ujung Pandang. It serves as a forum bringing together participants from diverse backgrounds, such as education, healthcare, banking, and more, to discuss the challenges and opportunities in cybersecurity. The participants were divided into two groups and given cybersecurity cases to discuss. The primary goal of this workshop is to develop an effective framework to enhance cybersecurity capacity in the community.</p> <p>In this workshop, we value the contributions and feedback from participants, which help us understand their perceptions and awareness of cybersecurity. The focus group discussions, lasting 60-90 minutes, provided valuable insights into how to increase awareness and skills in cybersecurity across various sectors.</p> <p>After the workshop, we summarised the discussion outcomes and concluded the key findings generated. This provided a more comprehensive view of the challenges and opportunities in cybersecurity, laying the groundwork for further steps in enhancing community cybersecurity capacity.</p> <p> </p>

Intention to Use Cybersecurity in SMEs: Improving SMEs' Performance
<p><span>This study prompted by observation where there are a considerable percentage of SMEs had not yet adopted cybersecurity, while witnessing a substantial number of cyberattacks being faced in SMEs. This study aims to explore the level of interest and motivation among Small-Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in adopting cybersecurity to reduce and prevent cyberattacks. This research model uses Structural Equation Model (SEM) and SmartPLS 4.0 as statistical tools. By using Purposive Sampling Method data was collected via an online questionnaire with 129 respondents from 26 April to 26 May 2024, consisting of people who play a part in SMEs that have not adopted cybersecurity. The proposed model has eight variables: Intention to Use Cybersecurity (INT), Observability (OBSR), Competitive Pressure (CP), Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Perceived Usefulness (PU), Compatibility (COMP), Technological Readiness (TR), and Trialability (TRI). The result stated that six out of ten hypotheses are accepted, and the rest are rejected.</span></p>

Data from: Health IT, hacking, and cybersecurity: national trends in data breaches of protected health information
Objective: The rapid adoption of health information technology (IT) coupled with growing reports of ransomware, and hacking has made cybersecurity a priority in health care. This study leverages federal data in order to better understand current cybersecurity threats in the context of health IT. Materials and Methods: Retrospective observational study of all available reported data breaches in the United States from 2013 to 2017, downloaded from a publicly available federal regulatory database. Results: There were 1512 data breaches affecting 154 415 257 patient records from a heterogeneous distribution of covered entities (P < .001). There were 128 electronic medical record-related breaches of 4 867 920 patient records, while 363 hacking incidents affected 130 702 378 records. Discussion and Conclusion: Despite making up less than 25% of all breaches, hacking was responsible for nearly 85% of all affected patient records. As medicine becomes increasingly interconnected and informatics-driven, significant improvements to cybersecurity must be made so our health IT infrastructure is simultaneously effective, safe, and secure.
