Glacial deep ocean deoxygenation driven by biologically-mediated air-sea disequilibrium

This repository contains data used in the Cliff et al. (2020) Nature Geoscience paper entitled "Glacial deep ocean deoxygenation driven by biologically-mediated air-sea disequilibrium". All results described in the paper can be recreated from these data.

PIC_O2_experiments.mat contains data for the preindustrial (PIC) set of experiments.

LGM_x10SO_O2_experiments.mat contains data for the LGM set of experiments.

Each file contains 3-D, annual mean fields of oxygen and other variables for the 9 experiments discussed in the paper (an equilibrium run plus the final steady state solutions for 8 perturbation runs). The fields are stored as cell arrays of length 9, with the first element containing the equilibrium solution and the subsequent 8 the perturbation runs. The variable 'experiments' is a cell array of length 9 whose elements are strings describing the corresponding experiments. The following fields are provided (all in units of [mol/m^3]):

O2: Dissolved oxygen
O2pre: Preformed oxygen
O2eq: Preformed solubility equilibrium oxygen

O2_phy: Dissolved oxygen from the physics-only experiments
O2pre_phy: Preformed oxygen from the physics-only experiments
O2eq_phy: Preformed solubility equilibrium oxygen from the physics-only experiments

PO4: Dissolved inorganic phosphate
PO4pre: Preformed phosphate

PO4_phy: Dissolved inorganic phosphate from the physics-only experiments
PO4pre_phy: Preformed phosphate from the physics-only experiments

AOU: Apparent Oxygen Utilization
Csoft: Respired carbon

In addition, the following variables are provided:

RCO: carbon to oxygen Redfield ratio
RCP: carbon to phosphorus Redfield ratio
RPO: phosphorus to oxygen Redfield ratio

x: longitude ([degrees east])
y: latitude ([degrees north])
z: depth ([m])
dv: volume of grid boxes ([m^3])

Late Cretaceous (Cenomanian-Turonian) ocean deoxygenation variability in response to idealized orbital configurations

This dataset contains ocean and ocean biogeochemistry outputs (NetCDF files) from modeling experiments with realistic Cenomano-Turonian paleogeography and various set of idealized Earth' orbit confiurations (Eccentricity, Obliquity, Precession) . The set of simulation targets the ocean oxygenation response to variation in orbital parameters (Sarr et al. 2022) . The simulations have been run using the IPSL-CM5A2 General Circulation Model (Sepulchre et al. 2020 - IPSL-CM5A2 – an Earth system model designed for

multi-millennial climate simulations, GMD) and offline version of PISCESv2 model (Aumont et al., 2015 - PISCES-v2: an ocean biogeochemical model for carbon and

ecosystem studies, GMD). It includes 6 ocean-atmosphere simulations and 6 ocean biogeochemistry simulations. Data are monthly averages over the last 100 years of the simulations.

Re-aware Global Ocean Deoxygenation During the Past 140 Years

The intensifying global ocean deoxygenation has significant impacts on the oceanic ecological equilibrium. Gaps persist in understanding the dynamic evolution of global ocean oxygen throughout the 20th century due to the spatiotemporal sparsity of measurements and systematic biases within Earth system models. Here, we propose a novel spatiotemporal embedded artificial intelligence model that integrates diverse ocean datasets to construct a high-precision, monthly-resolved global ocean oxygen dataset spanning the past 140 years. Our quantitative analyses revealed a decline in global ocean oxygen content from 234.5 ± 0.4 Pmol in 1871 to 230.6 ± 0.4 Pmol in 2010, with a sharp drop of −1402.2 ± 173.6 Tmol per decade post-1980, attributing 98.5% of total oxygen loss in the past three decades alone. Our investigation further underscored that the critical temperature at the sea surface beyond which ocean oxygen begins to rapidly decrease is approximately 18°C. Forward-looking projections underlined the potential for a decline exceeding 10% in global ocean oxygen content relative to pre-1900 levels, under uncontrolled anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions by the end of the 21st century. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of historical dynamics and future trajectories in global ocean oxygen, as well as a deeper knowledge of ocean deoxygenation and its underlying mechanisms.
