Linking individual and species-level leaf traits with ontogenetic development stage to explain tree performance under competition and environmental contexts

<p><span>To verify how species traits and individual traits link ontogenetic size, external biotic and abiotic factors to influence tree performance. In a temperate natural forest in northeastern China, we measured dynamic performance, size, as well as competition, topography, and soil variables as biotic and abiotic variables for all 1320 trees of 17 species in 62 monitoring plots from 2010-2020. For each individual tree, we also measured five typical functional traits representing leaf size and elemental content: leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf nitrogen content, and leaf carbon : nitrogen ratios. These traits are not only strongly associated with performance, but trade-offs between traits have previously been shown to express plant acquisitive-conservative strategy characteristics. Reconceptualized based on previous understanding of trait-based approach (Fig. 1). We first tested the direct explanatory effects of species traits and individual traits on performance in multifactorial contexts.</span> <span>We first tested the direct explanatory effects of species traits and individual traits on performance in multifactorial contexts. Subsequently, we analyzed the moderating and mediating effects of these two levels of traits in explaining ontogenetic size, external competition, and environmental influences on performance. Replication Package for "How Developers Engage with Static Analysis Tools in Different Contexts"

<p>This is the replication package for the paper &quot;How Developers Engage with Static Analysis Tools in Different Contexts&quot;.</p> <p>We include all the artifacts necessary to replicate the results obtained in our paper. Specifically, we provide (i) the survey questions together with all the valid answers we received including the demographics of our respondents, (ii) the most relevant statements that we extracted from the&nbsp;interviews&nbsp;including the demographics of our interviewees, (iii) the results of the card sorting performed on the development activities where our participants adopt Static Analysis Tools, (iv) all the data related to Krippendorff&rsquo;s Alpha calculation for the performed card sorting, and (v)&nbsp;mapping of ASATs to the &quot;rules&quot; categories defined by Novak et al. (2010) and script for calculating occurrence, definition, and enforcement of the different ASAT types together with input and output data. Furthermore, we include the&nbsp;list of links to Reddit posts and inspected open-source projects together with their inspection data and the scripts for computing the inter-rater agreement during the inspection. Finally, we provide the Github features computed&nbsp;for each project and script for generating the sets of projects.</p>

Early Childhood Development of Communicative Competence in Two Urban African Contexts

<p>The study assessed the communicative competencies of 2-3 year-old children, and parental perceptions of influences on their child&rsquo;s development, in two contrasting neighbourhoods of Zambia&rsquo;s multilingual capital city, Lusaka: a low-income, high density neighbourhood, and a more affluent low-density area. An adapted version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventory was administered individually to each parent. Parents then participated in semi-structured focus group discussions. Parental reports revealed a bilingual or plurilingual lexical repertoire in these young children, with fluid intermingling between English and indigenous Bantu languages, notably ciNyanja, the city&rsquo;s lingua franca. Alternative methods of scoring the inventory showed that children of affluent families knew more English words, while children of low-income families knew more Bantu language words. The two groups were equal on an &lt;/i&gt;overall score&lt;i&gt; that included words known in any language. Recent changes in national educational policy prioritise local language instruction over English. The two groups of parents expressed different attitudes towards this policy, reflecting cultural values and child socialisation practices. Young children in the high-density area were encouraged to play more freely with neighborhood peers. We recommend greater acceptance of linguistic fluidity by early education instructors as a powerful cognitive resource for the growth of communicative competence.</p>

Development of compact transcriptional effectors using high-throughput measurements in diverse contexts

<p>HT-recruit and CRISPR HT-recruit processed datasets&nbsp;</p> <p>Abstract: <span>Transcriptional effectors are protein domains known to activate or repress gene expression, however, a systematic understanding of which effector domains regulate transcription robustly across genomic, cell-type, and DNA-binding domain (DBD) contexts is lacking. Here, we develop dCas9-mediated high-throughput recruitment (HT-recruit), a pooled screening method for quantifying effector function at endogenous target genes, and test effector function for a library containing 5,092 nuclear protein Pfam domains across varied contexts. We also map context dependencies of effectors drawn from unannotated protein regions using a larger library containing 114,288 sequences tiling chromatin regulators and transcription factors. We find that many effectors depend on target and DBD contexts, such as HLH domains that can act as either activators or repressors. To enable efficient perturbations, we select context-robust domains, including ZNF705 KRAB, that improve CRISPRi tools to silence promoters and enhancers. We engineer a compact human activator NFZ by combining several domains, which enables efficient CRISPRa with better viral delivery, and inducible control of CAR T-cells. Together, this effector-by-context functional map reveals context-dependence across human effectors and guides effector selection for manipulating transcription.</span></p>

Effect of Light Wavelength on Soybean Growth and Development in a Context of Speed Breeding

<p>Soybean breeding involves crossing and inbreeding for multiple generations to develop genetically-stable lines. The long generation times and the absence of easily-scalable double-haploid technologies cause early generations to be the major bottleneck in soybean breeding. Here we tested the effect of red and blue lights (RB) and full spectrum white lights (FS) generated by light emitting diode (LED) panels, coupled with 12 h light (29 °C) / 12 h darkness (27 °C) photothermal conditions, on the growth and development of soybean lines and breeding materials of diverse maturity groups in a context of speed breeding. We observed that RB light, when compared to FS light, reduced plant height by an average of 17.3 cm but did not affect vegetative biomass, pods and seeds per plants, nor the ability to meet a minimum of one seed per plant. Overall, the RB light treatment reduced days after planting (DAP) to physiological maturity (R7) by 1.5 d as compared to FS. The period between planting and the harvest of seeds (cycle time) of mid- and late-maturity soybean ranged from 63 to 81 d in the greenhouse, as compared to approximately 120 d typically observed in field conditions. Also, DAP to R7 was dependent on soybean maturity group. The use of RB lights, coupled with photothermal conditions herein reported, would allow to advance up to 5 generations of US-adapted soybean under a controlled environment, instead of the 1-3 generations currently possible. This methodology is simple and easily scalable for it maintains stable growing conditions throughout the crop cycle and it allows for simultaneous planting and harvesting within the same growth room. This could have a significant impact in genetic gain of U.S. soybean breeding programs.</p>

Data from: Social and emotional contexts predict the development of gaze following in early infancy

<p>The development of gaze following begins in early infancy and its developmental foundation has been under heavy debate. Using a longitudinal design (<i>N</i> = 118), we demonstrate that attachment quality predicts individual differences in the onset of gaze following, at 6 months of age, and that maternal postpartum depression predicts later gaze following, at 10 months. In addition, we report longitudinal stability in gaze following from 6 to 10 months. A full path model (using attachment, maternal depression, and gaze following at 6) accounted for 21 % of variance in gaze following at 10 months. These results suggest an <i>experience-dependent</i> development of gaze following, driven by the infant's own motivation to interact and engage with others (the <i>social-first</i> perspective).</p>
