Data from: Environmental conditions during development affect sexual selection through trait-fitness relationships

<p>Sexual selection can be shaped by spatial variation in environmental features among populations. Differences in sexual selection among populations generated through the effects of the environment could be shaped via four paths: differences in mean absolute fitness, differences in the means or variances of phenotypes, or differences in the absolute fitness-trait function relationship. Because sexual selection only occurs during the adult life stage, most studies have focused on identifying environmental features that influence these metrics of fitness and trait distributions among adults. However, these adult features could also be affected by environmental factors experienced in early life stages that then shape the trajectory for sexual selection during the adult life stage. Here we investigated how among-population variation in environmental conditions during the juvenile (larval) stage of two species of <i>Enallagma</i> damselflies shapes sexual selection on male body size. We found that environmental factors related to predation pressures, lake primary productivity, and habitat availability have a role in shaping spatial variation in sexual selection. This acts mainly through how the environment affects absolute fitness-body size associations, not spatial variation in mean fitness or body size means and variances. These results demonstrate that the underpinnings of sexual selection in the wild can arise from environmental conditions during pre-reproductive life stages.</p>

BBN designed to develop future land-use scenarios for the Sierra Nevada under different environmental and management conditions

<p>Land-use change (deforestation for crops and pastures, reforestation, firewood removal, etc.) constitutes one of the primary drivers of global change, since human activity is to a greater or lesser degree altering the vegetation cover of the planet. The combined effects of climate change and shifts in land use determine the distribution and structure of the vegetation of the Sierra Nevada, and the associated ecosystem services. The surface cover of tree formations in Sierra Nevada has expanded from 15% to 51.23% over the last 60 years. Similarly, a densification of the scattered tree cover and the natural forests and a decline in the surface area occupied by cultivated fields (from 17.8% to 4.72%) has occurred in the last six decades (Zamora, et al, 2016). Therefore, it is important to ascertain future land use change and its effects on the vegetation cover.&nbsp;</p><p>The main purpose of this model is to facilitate the land-use management of Protected Areas (PAs) based on ecosystem services (ES). A BBN is being designed to develop future land-use scenarios for the Sierra Nevada under different environmental and management conditions. Afterwards, we will implement these scenarios in other ES assessment models. The analysis of ES trade-offs in several scenarios will help managers to predict the state of ES and their relations in the future.</p>

DCASE 2024 Challenge Task 7 Development Dataset : Environmental Sound Scene Synthesis

<h1><strong>Description</strong></h1> <p>This dataset comprises embeddings and captions utilized as the development dataset for <a href="https://dcase.community/challenge2024/task-sound-scene-synthesis"><strong>DCASE 2024 Challenge Task 7</strong></a>, focusing on 'Environmental Sound Scene Synthesis.' The embeddings are derived from 60 different 4-second audio files formatted as mono 32-bit 32kHz, and are contained in the 'embeddings.tar.xz' file. Captions corresponding to each audio file can be found in 'caption.csv'. This dataset does not comprise the audio files, only the embeddings. Three different types of embeddings are provided: VGGish (vggish), MS-CLAP (clap-2023), and PANNs CNN14 Wavegram-Logmel (panns-wavegram-logmel). Only PANNs CNN14 Wavegram-Logmel (panns-wavegram-logmel) embeddings are used for evaluation in the challenge. Environmental heterogeneity shapes physiological traits in tropical direct-developing frogs

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>1. Tropical ectotherm species tend to have narrower physiological limits than species from temperate areas. As a consequence, tropical species are considered highly vulnerable to climate change since minor temperature increases can push them beyond their physiological thermal tolerance. Differences in physiological tolerances can also be seen at finer evolutionary scales, such as among populations of ectotherm species along elevation gradients, highlighting the physiological sensitivity of such organisms.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>2. Here we analyze the influence of elevation and bioclimatic domains, defined by temperature and precipitation, on thermal sensitivities of a terrestrial direct-developing frog (<i>Craugastor loki)</i> in a tropical gradient. We address the following questions: <i>i</i>) Does preferred temperature vary with elevation and among bioclimatic domains? <i>ii</i>)<i> </i>Do thermal tolerance limits, i.e. critical thermal maximum and critical thermal minimum vary with elevation and bioclimatic domains?, and <i>iii</i>) Are populations from high elevations more vulnerable to climate warming? </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>3. We found that along an elevation gradient body temperature decreases as environmental temperature increases. The preferred temperature tends to moderately increase with elevation within the sampled bioclimatic domains. Our results indicate that the ideal thermal landscape for this species is located at mid-elevations, where the thermal accuracy (<i>db</i>) and thermal quality of the environment (<i>de</i>) are suitable. The critical thermal maximum is variable across elevations and among the bioclimatic domains, decreasing as elevation increases. Conversely, the critical thermal minimum is not as variable as the critical thermal maximum. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>4. Populations from the lowlands may be more vulnerable to future increases in temperature. We highlight that the critical thermal maximum is related to high temperatures exhibited across the elevation gradient and within in each bioclimatic domain, therefore, it is a response to high environmental temperatures.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Data from: Development and validation of targeted environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding for early detection of 69 invasive fishes and aquatic invertebrates

<p>Invasive species are of concern due to their impacts on ecosystems and economies, but they pose significant control challenges. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is a powerful tool in the detection of aquatic organisms at low densities due to high sensitivity and ease of collection. Aquatic eDNA analyses have increased worldwide and are generally either applied to a few target species (quantitative PCR) or for broad taxonomic applications (metabarcoding).  Here we describe the development and testing of a hybrid approach that utilized high sensitivity PCR primer sets and high-throughput sequencing (HTS), referred to as <em>targeted metabarcoding</em>, to detect 69 fishes and invertebrates. We identified target species based on reports of globally important invasive species and developed two independent PCR primers for each species (CO1 and a second mtDNA region). We assessed sensitivity and eDNA interference for all 138 primers (2 per species, 69 species) using standard end-point PCR and tested them on 10 eDNA samples spiked with various amounts of one or more of the target species' DNA.  The sensitivity of the 138 primer sets ranged between 1.5×10<sup>-5</sup> and 2.64 ng template DNA (mean = 0.069 ng). Primers were also tested for interference effects using plankton eDNA to simulate field conditions. The inclusion of interfering plankton DNA reduced the sensitivity for most primer sets by one or more orders of magnitude (range 0 to 3). Overall, our targeted metabarcoding resulted in the detection of ~ 98% of species in the DNA spiked samples, and, perhaps more importantly, the HTS read count was positively related to the quantity of spiked DNA (P &lt; 0.002).  We envision this technique being particularly useful for the early detection of species at low population densities; however, there are diverse applications of targeted metabarcoding for monitoring aquatic community composition and quantifying ecosystem change and health.</p>

Linking individual and species-level leaf traits with ontogenetic development stage to explain tree performance under competition and environmental contexts

<p><span>To verify how species traits and individual traits link ontogenetic size, external biotic and abiotic factors to influence tree performance. In a temperate natural forest in northeastern China, we measured dynamic performance, size, as well as competition, topography, and soil variables as biotic and abiotic variables for all 1320 trees of 17 species in 62 monitoring plots from 2010-2020. For each individual tree, we also measured five typical functional traits representing leaf size and elemental content: leaf area, specific leaf area, leaf dry matter content, leaf nitrogen content, and leaf carbon : nitrogen ratios. These traits are not only strongly associated with performance, but trade-offs between traits have previously been shown to express plant acquisitive-conservative strategy characteristics. Reconceptualized based on previous understanding of trait-based approach (Fig. 1). We first tested the direct explanatory effects of species traits and individual traits on performance in multifactorial contexts.</span> <span>We first tested the direct explanatory effects of species traits and individual traits on performance in multifactorial contexts. Subsequently, we analyzed the moderating and mediating effects of these two levels of traits in explaining ontogenetic size, external competition, and environmental influences on performance. Development of Environmentally-Friendly Stabilization Methods for Transportation Infrastructure Based on Geopolymers

Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;Geopolymers (GPs) have received much attention as an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative to conventional chemical additives, since they can be processed at room temperatures from aqueous solutions by utilizing waste materials (e.g. fly ash) or abundant natural sources (e.g. clay). A collaborative research study is carried out by teams from Texas A&amp;M University (TAMU) and University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) to investigate the effectiveness of GPs for stabilizing base and subgrade materials by considering the strength and shrink-swell characteristics. Two types of clay, obtained from the North Dallas area, were mixed with a potassium-based GP synthesized from metakaolin and silica fume, at a ratio of 8 wt% of dry geopolymer to dry soil, and cured for a period of 7 days. Moisture-density relationship tests conducted show that treated soils have a higher optimum moisture content and lower maximum dry density as compared to untreated soils. Treated soils exhibited significant reduction in shrinkage and swell properties as compared to untreated soils. Additionally, unconfined compression strength tests also show an increase in strength of treated soils.&quot;</p>
