Data Bundle for PyPSA-Eur: An Open Optimisation Model of the European Transmission System

PyPSA-Eur is an open model dataset of the European power system at the transmission network level that covers the full ENTSO-E area. It can be built using the code provided at https://github.com/PyPSA/PyPSA-eur.

It contains alternating current lines at and above 220 kV voltage level and all high voltage direct current lines, substations, an open database of conventional power plants, time series for electrical demand and variable renewable generator availability, and geographic potentials for the expansion of wind and solar power.

Not all data dependencies are shipped with the code repository, since git is not suited for handling large changing files. Instead we provide separate data bundles to be downloaded and extracted as noted in the documentation.

This is the full data bundle to be used for rigorous research. It includes large bathymetry and natural protection area datasets.

While the code in PyPSA-Eur is released as free software under the MIT, different licenses and terms of use apply to the various input data, which are summarised below:

corine/*

CORINE Land Cover (CLC) database

Source: https://land.copernicus.eu/pan-european/corine-land-cover/clc-2012/

Terms of Use: https://land.copernicus.eu/pan-european/corine-land-cover/clc-2012?tab=metadata

natura/*

Natura 2000 natural protection areas

Source: https://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/natura-10

Terms of Use: https://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/natura-10#tab-metadata

gebco/GEBCO_2014_2D.nc

GEBCO bathymetric dataset

Source: https://www.gebco.net/data_and_products/gridded_bathymetry_data/version_20141103/

Terms of Use: https://www.gebco.net/data_and_products/gridded_bathymetry_data/documents/gebco_2014_historic.pdf

je-e-21.03.02.xls

Population and GDP data for Swiss Cantons

Source: https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/en/home/news/whats-new.assetdetail.7786557.html

Terms of Use:

https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/en/home/fso/swiss-federal-statistical-office/terms-of-use.html

https://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/de/home/bfs/oeffentliche-statistik/copyright.html

nama_10r_3popgdp.tsv.gz

Population by NUTS3 region

Source: http://appsso.eurostat.ec.europa.eu/nui/show.do?dataset=nama_10r_3popgdp&lang=en

Terms of Use:

https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/about/policies/copyright

GDP_per_capita_PPP_1990_2015_v2.nc

Gross Domestic Product per capita (PPP) from years 1999 to 2015

Rectangular cutout for European countries in PyPSA-Eur, including a 10 km buffer

Kummu et al. PyPSA-Eur Datasets for MyPyPSA-Ger

Datasets from PyPSA-Eur model for usage in MyPyPSA-Ger model

Supplementary Data: Code, Input Data and Model data: PyPSA-Eur: An Open Optimisation Model of the European Transmission System

Supplementary Data (preliminary version)

PyPSA-Eur: An Open Optimisation Model of the European Transmission System

Authors: J. Hörsch, F. Hofmann, D. Schlachtberger, T. Brown

and

The role of spatial scale in joint optimisations of generation and transmission for European highly renewable scenarios

Authors: J. Hörsch, T. Brown

The files in this record contain the scripts to build a PyPSA model of the European Electricity System including renewable feed-in from wind, solar and hydro installations derived from reanalysis weather data satellite irradiation. The model PyPSA-Eur is described in the above publication.

Scripts

To use the scripts, you need the following free software Python libraries:

PyPSA for the modelling framework

vresutils for various helper functions to build the model instance

atlite to process weather data into power system data

snakemake to organise the execution of the software

and other standard libraries from the Python Package Index (PyPI), such as pandas, pyomo, countrycode, etc.

snakemake requires that all code runs with Python version 3. The code setup is known to work with the following versions: PyPSA 0.12.0, pandas 0.21.1, numpy 0.14.0, scipy 0.19.1, pyomo 5.2. You may need to downgrade your libraries to these versions for the scripts to work.

The Python scripts in this repository (in the directory scripts/) are released under the GNU General Public Licence Version 3.0 (GPL 3.0).

The scripts build_*.py process all raw input data into a form where it can be used in the model.

base_network.py creates the initial PyPSA network topology.

add_electricity.py adds generators and storage units to the models, it generates the detailed resolved model described in the PyPSA-Eur paper.

simplify_network.py removes stub ac-buses from network topology and simplifies long dc lines.

cluster_network.py creates clustered representations of the electricity network for a given number of buses following the topology described in the "spatial scale" paper.

prepare_network.py adds parameters like the CO2 limit and the transmission expansion volume relevant for the optimization to the model.

All scripts are managed with the snakemake workflow management tool.

To run the scripts, adjust the parameters in config.yaml and cluster.yaml to your local configuration. Then simply execute

snakemake

for the rule you want to run.

Data

The input data include:

Electricity sector data

Topology derived from the analysis of an extract of the ENTSO-E online map using GridKit .

A cost database with literature sources.

Data set from the article Lo Rito M, Grandinetti M, Muzio G, Varrica A, Frigiola A, Micheletti A, Chessa M, Giamberti A. Results for tricuspid valve surgery in adults with congenital heart disease other than Ebstein's anomaly†. Eur J Cardiothorac Surg. 2019 Oct 1;56(4):706-713. doi: 10.1093/ejcts/ezz093. PMID: 30919906.

This is the abstract:

Objectives: Tricuspid valve (TV) surgery in the adult with congenital heart disease (ACHD) is a frequently performed procedure. The aim of this study was to analyse postoperative and medium-term outcomes.

Methods: We conducted a single-centre retrospective study of patients with ACHD who underwent TV surgery (January 2000-December 2016); patients with Ebstein's anomalies were excluded. Operative and clinical records were reviewed. Outcomes considered were survival, grade of insufficiency/stenosis and TV reoperation at follow-up.

Results: A total of 128 patients with ACHD had TV surgery for functional regurgitation (n = 95), dysplasia (n = 23) and systemic TV (n = 10). Median age was 40.8 years [interquartile range (IQR) 25.3]; 55.5% were men. Preoperative regurgitation was classified as mild (n = 8), moderate (n = 47) and severe (n = 70). The TV was repaired in 109 as follows: ring annuloplasty (n = 43), de Vega annuloplasty (n = 29), Wooler annuloplasty (n = 13), commissural plasty (n = 9), Kay annuloplasty (n = 7) and others (n = 8). The TV was replaced in 19 patients with biological (n = 10) and mechanical (n = 9) prostheses. The median hospital stay was 12 days (IQR 10). The overall mortality rate was 8.6% (n = 11): 2 hospital deaths (1.6%) and 9 late deaths. Survival was 93% [95% confidence interval (CI) 85-97%] at 5 years and 83% (95% CI 70-91%) at 10 years. The median follow-up period was 4.95 years (IQR 7.7) with 1 TV reoperation. Echocardiographic assessment showed ≥moderate regurgitation in 34 (34.3%) patients. Suture plasty had a significantly higher incidence of TV regurgitation ≥moderate compared to ring annuloplasty (48.9% vs 26.3%; P = 0.033).

Conclusions: TV surgery in the ACHD is frequently associated with other main procedures. Stabilizing the TV annulus with a prosthetic ring guarantees lower recurrence of moderate to severe regurgitation compared to suture plasty repair.

Epub 2018 Jun 19. PMID: 29922933; PMCID: PMC6291432.

This is the abstract

Purpose: (1) to estimate the prevalence of Circle of Willis (CoW) variants in patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy, (2) to correlate these variants to controls and (3) cerebral ischemia depicted by computed tomography (CT).

Materials and methods: After Institutional Review Board approval, data of 544 carotid endarterectomy patients (331 males, mean age 69±8 years) and 196 controls (117 males, mean age 66±11 years) who underwent brain CT and carotid CT angiography (CTA) were retrospectively analysed. Two observers independently classified each CoW segment as normal, hypoplastic (diameter <0.8 mm) or non-visualized. Four groups of CoW variants based on the number of hypoplastic/non-visualized segments were correlated with clinical data (ANOVA, χ2 and multivariate logistic regression analysis). Intra- and inter-observer agreement was estimated using Cohen κ statistics.

Results: High prevalence of CoW variants (97%) and compromised CoW (81%) was observed in the study group and significant difference was found in the distribution of CoW variants compared to controls (p<0.001), internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis being the only independent predictor of CoW morphology (p<0.001). Significant correlation was found between CoW configuration and brain ischemia in the study group (p=0.002). ICA stenosis of ≥90% was associated to higher rate of ipsilateral A1 hypoplasia/non-visualization (p<0.001). Intra- and inter-observer agreement was from substantial to almost perfect (Cohen κ=0.75-1.0).

Conclusion: Highly variable CoW morphology was demonstrated in patients undergoing endarterectomy compared to controls. Likely compromised CoW in relation to cerebral ischemia was observed in a large cohort of carotid endarterectomy subjects.

Key points: • CoW variant distribution significantly differed in the study and control groups (p<0.001). • ICA stenosis was the only independent predictor of CoW morphology (p<0.001). • Severely compromised CoW configuration showed significant association with brain ischemia (p=0.002).
