Validated onshore and offshore time series for European countries (1979-2017)

<p>This repository comprises hourly time series representing the onshore and offshore wind capacity factors in every European country (EU-28 except the islands Malta and Cyprus plus Norway and Switzerland) from 1979 to 2017. The term capacity factor is defined as the ratio between the delivered power and the cumulative installed capacity. 3 letter codes (ISO-3166-3) are used to identify the countries.</p> <p>For every country, onshore wind time series are included. For some of the countries, offshore wind time series are also included. In both cases, the time series include data for the period 1979-2017.&nbsp; However, for every year, the installed capacity layout is kept fixed and corresponds to turbines running in 2015. By doing so the time series for different years represent the weather influenced on the wind generation and are not impacted by differences in installed capacities.</p> <p>To obtain onshore and offshore wind time series, wind velocity from Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR) dataset has been converted into electricity generation and aggregated at country level. The methodology was described in detail and validated for Denmark in <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0360544215012815">Andresen <em>et al</em>., Energy 93 (2015)</a>. A mixed-methods study conducted by EURIPA.</span></strong></p> <p><strong><span>Abstract</span></strong></p> <p><strong><span>Background</span></strong></p> <p><span>The role of primary care during a pandemic varies across European countries. The COVID-19 pandemic has altered the working practices of family medicine doctors. It has also impacted the resilience of health systems.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Objectives</span></strong><span> </span></p> <p><span>This study aimed to examine European health system responses to the pandemic, focusing on rural and urban differences.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Material and methods</span></strong></p> <p><span>This cross-sectional, mixed-methods study used a semi-structured online questionnaire with 68 questions, including 21 free-text comments. Data were collected from May 2020 to January 2021. Key informants from sixteen EURIPA member countries distributed questionnaires to 406 primary care doctors. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests (Chi-square, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U) with a significance threshold of 0.05. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results</span></strong></p> <p><span>A statistically significant difference was found between rural (36.4%, 55/151), semirural (19.4%, 24/124), and urban populations (29.8%, 39/131) regarding medicine shortages (&chi;&sup2; = 9.91, df = 4, p = 0.042). <span>&nbsp;</span>The semirural one proved to have a statistically significant difference with the other settings(chi-square post-hoc test, p = 0.004 in post-hoc chi-square test). Significant differences were found between countries in resilience features including, Effectiveness of triage, Adapting to the rapidly changing requirements, Government help, Existence of a community resilience group, Improved interprofessional collaboration, Medicine Shortage and GPs involved in palliative care.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusions</span></strong></p> <p><span>Medicine shortage was more prevalent in rural and urban areas compared to semirural ones. Differences were observed between countries in their responses to the pandemic, particularly in Adapting to the rapidly changing requirements, Effectiveness of triage, Government help, Existence of a Community resilience group. Qualitative analysis confirmed these disparities.</span></p> <p><span>The results emphasize the need for tailored approaches considering diverse contexts in shaping effective health system resilience.</span></p>

Survey on Speech-and-Language Therapists' attitudes and approaches towards multilingualism across four European countries

<p>The file contains all the responses of 300 Speech-and-Language&nbsp;Therapists (SLTs) from Germany, Austria, Italy and Switwerland to a series of questions concerning the provision of speech and language&nbsp;therapy to multilingual children with Developmental Language Disorders. Both the original responses and numerically coded versions are included. Two excel sheets are provided: in the first sheet all responses to&nbsp;the general questionnaire are reported, whereas in the second sheet a subset of the responses obtained from 154 German-speaking SLT respondents are included (more in-depth analyses will be performed on an extended dataset concerning German-speaking SLTs only). These responses have been analysed and presented in the paper titled &quot;Speech and Language Therapy service for multilingual&nbsp;children: Attitudes and approaches across four European countries&quot;.</p>

Impact of Clean Energy on CO2 Emissions and Economic Growth within the Phases of Renewables Diffusion in Selected European Countries

<p>This study explores the impact of clean energy and non-renewable energy consumption on CO<sub>2</sub> emissions and economic growth within two phases (formative and expansion) of renewable energy diffusion for three selected countries (France, Spain, and Sweden). The vector autoregression (VAR) model is estimated on the basis of annual data disaggregated into quarterly data. The Granger causality results reveal distinctive differences in the causality patterns across countries and two phases of renewables diffusion. Clean energy consumption contributes to a decline of emissions more clearly in the expansion phase in France and Spain. However, this effect seems to be counteracted by the increases in emissions due to economic growth and non-renewable energy consumption. Therefore, clean energy consumption has not yet led to a decoupling of economic growth from emissions in France and Spain; in contrast, the findings for Sweden evidence such a decoupling due to the neutrality between economic growth and emissions. Generally, the findings show that despite the enormous growth of renewables and active mitigation policies, CO<sub>2</sub> emissions have not substantially decreased in selected countries or globally. Focused and coordinated policy action, not only at the EU level but also globally, is urgently needed to overhaul existing fossil-fuel economies into low-carbon economies and ultimately meet the relevant climate targets.</p>

Food composition database for nutrient intake: selected vitamins and minerals in selected European countries

<p>Following a request from the European Commission for a review of European dietary reference values (DRVs), the EFSA&rsquo;s Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA) has prepared a number of&nbsp;Scientific Opinions on DRVs for micronutrients. The DATA Unit supported this activity by estimating the nutrient intake of a number of micronutrients in nine selected European countries and different age groups. In addition, the DATA Unit also provided information on average content of food sources of the respective nutrients per country based on the composition database, as well as main food group contributors to nutrient intakes and assessed the comparability of the provided data with pertinent published intake data.</p> <p>Intake estimates have been assessed using food consumption data from the EFSA Comprehensive Food Consumption Database (EFSA, 2011a) and the EFSA Nutrient composition database. Food composition data used to populate the Nutrient composition database were provided to EFSA through the EFSA procurement project &lsquo;<em>Updated food composition database for nutrient intake&rsquo;</em> (Roe at al., 2013). Data were provided following the EFSA specification for standard sample description for food and feed and were classified according to the FoodEx2 classification system of EFSA (EFSA, 2011b).</p> <p>The food composition data used in these assessments and here published cover the following vitamins and minerals: calcium (Ca); copper (Cu); cobalamin (vitamin B12); magnesium (Mg); niacin; phosphorus (P); potassium (K); riboflavin; thiamin; iron (Fe); selenium (Se); vitamin B6; vitamin K, zinc (Zn), and vitamin E<sup>1</sup>. The food composition dataset contains data from seven<sup>2</sup>&nbsp;countries: Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Sweden, and United Kingdom. This dataset version has been checked for outliers but is prior to data completion for missing foods and nutrient values.</p> <p><sup>1</sup>&nbsp;Vitamin E is defined as alpha-tocopherol (AT) only, however as most food composition databases in the EU contain values as alpha-tocopherol equivalents (TE), data on TE are also provided</p> <p><sup>2</sup> For the nutrient intake estimates of Ireland and Latvia present in the opinions of the EFSA Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies (NDA), food composition data from UK and Germany were respectively used</p>

Genotype data of 1970 Pedunculate oak trees (Quercus robur L.) in 13 European countries at 381 gene loci covering the nuclear and organelle genome

<p>The data set is the result of genetic inventory on 1970 Pedunculate oak trees from 197 locations in Europe. The samples are from the countries: Belarus, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Russia and Ukraine. At each location ten individual trees were collected. The data set includes the location ID and geographic coordinates of each sampled tree (longitude and latitude in decimal degrees) and the genotype data. All samples were screened with a targeted sequencing approach on a set of 381 polymorphic loci (356 nuclear SNPs, 3 nuclear InDels, 17 chloroplast SNPs and five mitochondrial SNPs).</p> <p>The genotype of each individual is one row in the csv-file "genotypes". The genotypes at the nuclear markers are diploid and represented by two columns per gene marker. The genetic information at the organelle genome is haploid. For each of these gene markers one column is used. Genotypes are coded by Arabic numbers. The meaning of the numbers is explained in the table "coding genotypes" in a second csv-file.</p>

Identifying behavioral and attitudinal barriers and drivers to promote consumption of pulses: A quantitative survey across five European countries

<p>Even though pulses are nutritious and environmentally friendly high-protein crops, they are commonly regarded as old-fashioned. Consumption of pulses is low in developed countries, and it has received very limited attention in agricultural and behavioral research over the past years. Based on a pan-European survey, the present study aims to provide extensive insights into consumer perceptions towards pulses. The objective is to identify effective measures to increase consumer acceptance of pulses, and thus potentially increase their share in the daily diets across Europe. Quantitative data was collected in May 2020 through a web-based survey conducted in five different European countries, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Poland, and the United Kingdom (N&nbsp;=&nbsp;4,916). Quota-based sampling was used to ensure comparability across samples and wide coverage in terms of age, gender, and locality of residence. Using cluster analysis with a subsequent logistic regression, cross-cultural differences were found in terms of relatively high consumption of pulses among Spanish respondents, somewhat lower for Polish, German and UK respondents, and even lower among Danish respondents. Drivers of consumption significantly differed across surveyed samples, mainly being health first, followed by sensory preferences. For respondents from Poland, Spain, and Germany the main reason for not consuming pulses related to problems with digestion, whereas in the Danish and UK samples a neglect related to preparation. Future product development as well as increased information about nutrition and cooking of pulses could potentially increase consumer acceptance. Though, considering cross-cultural differences is important when developing strategies to promote consumption of pulses.</p>

Willingness to replace animal-based products with pulses among consumers in different European countries

<p>The growing world population and increased meat consumption pose a challenge for current food production systems. While pulses present a promising position in terms of low impacts in primary production and high nutritional quality, it is unclear whether consumers are willing to consume pulses instead of meat. Based on an online survey answered by 4,322 respondents across five European countries, this study examined consumers&rsquo;&nbsp;willingness to utilize pulses as a plant-based alternative to animal-based products. More than a third of pulse consumers (42%) were, to some extent, already using pulses as an alternative to animal-based foods. Beef was noted as the most frequently replaced type of food, mainly driven by arguments relating to health, environment, and sustainability, especially relevant for German and Danish consumers. Respondents who did not indicate a current replacement of animal-based foods stated a relatively low willingness to change in the future (40%). German pulse consumers were likely to be part of the low willingness segment. In contrast, Polish consumers possessed a relatively higher incidence of using pulses instead of meat, especially pork and poultry. Respondents with a low replacement willingness indicated a high importance of future pulse-based products to be natural, while respondents already using pulses instead of animal-based foods expected convenient and minimally processed foods. Respondents, who already replaced meat with pulses or expressed a low future willingness, stated to prefer plain pulses over processed pulse-based products,&nbsp;and meat-resembling forms considering the former segment,&nbsp;alternatively to meat. These preferences and expectations should be considered for future product development, especially if aiming to attract unwilling consumers to shift to pulse-based foods.</p>

Corresponding spreadsheet to the Paper 'Comparative analysis of pre-Covid19 child immunization rates across 30 European countries and identification of underlying positive societal and system influences'

<p>This study provides a macro-level societal and health system focused analysis of child vaccination rates in 30 European countries, exploring the effect of context on coverage. The importance of demography and health system attributes on health care delivery are recognized in other fields, but generally overlooked in vaccination. The analysis is based on correlating systematic data built up by the Models of Child Health Appraised (MOCHA) Project with data from international sources, so as to exploit a one-off opportunity to set the analysis within an overall integrated study of primary care services for children, and the learning opportunities of the &lsquo;natural European laboratory&rsquo;. The descriptive analysis shows an overall persistent variation of coverage across vaccines with no specific vaccination having a low rate in all the EU and EEA countries. However, contrasting with this, variation between total uptake per vaccine across Europe suggests that the challenge of low rates is related to country contexts of either policy, delivery, or public perceptions. Econometric analysis aiming to explore whether some population, policy and/or health system characteristics may influence vaccination uptake provides important results - GDP per capita and the level of the population&rsquo;s higher education engagement are positively linked with higher vaccination coverage, whereas mandatory vaccination policy is related to lower uptake rates. The health system characteristics that have a significant positive effect are a cohesive management structure; a high nurse/doctor ratio; and use of practical care delivery reinforcements such as the home-based record and the presence of child components of e‑health strategies.</p>

Per capita sectoral emissions for European countries 1990 - 2022

<p>The data set contains per capita emissions (t CO2eq/capita) for European countries from 1990 to 2022 (for some countries values starting in 1985 are contained). Emission data is taken from the <a href="https://doi.org/10.2909/6331f651-8863-4656-a911-669f2a332a1e" target="_blank" rel="noopener">European Environment Agency</a> [1]. Population data is taken from <a href="https://doi.org/10.2908/DEMO_GIND" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Eurostat </a>(population at January 1th in each year) [2].
