Data from: Breeding relationships in Macaronesian Tolpis (Asteraceae-Cichorieae): F1 hybrid pollen fertility within and among populations from the Azores, Canary Islands and Madeira
The pollen fertility of F1 hybrids, ranging from progeny within natural populations to synthetic hybrids between species of Tolpis from three archipelagos in Macaronesia, was determined. Pollen fertility of F1 hybrids of inter-archipelago crosses from the Azores, Canaries, and Madeira were generally lower than crosses between populations or species in the same archipelagos. Lower pollen fertility was pronounced in hybrids between plants from the Canaries and the other archipelagos, which is concordant with a more distant phylogenetic relationship between the Canaries, and the Azores and Madeira. Lower average pollen fertility was seen between plants from different as compared to the same clades in the Canary Islands. However, low pollen fertilities were also detected between plants from some populations/species in the same archipelagos, and even among progeny of individual maternal plants. Some hybrids with reduced fertility had meiotic irregularities, suggesting chromosomal rearrangements; in other cases meiosis appeared normal. Results indicate that postzygotic isolating factors evolved subsequent to the divergence of Tolpis in the three archipelagos, but there are hybrid sterility factors among plants within each of the archipelagos, and even within some natural populations. Phylogenetic relationships in the Canary Islands indicate that divergence has occurred within the last million years. Present results implicate postzygotic factors as reproductive barriers facilitating population divergence and speciation in Macaronesian Tolpis.
Data from: Genetic parameters in subtropical pine F1 hybrids: heritabilities, between-trait correlations and genotype-by-environment interactions
Growth and stem straightness traits of 29 Pinus caribaea var. hondurensis × Pinus tecunumanii (PCH × PTEC) and 26 P. caribaea var. hondurensis × Pinus oocarpa (PCH × POOC) hybrid pair-crosses plus a total of 16 intraspecific families were assessed at ages 5, 8 and 15 years from planting at two sites. The PCH × PTEC hybrid was the most productive, yielding 37 % more than a Pinus elliottii local control and was 21 % superior to either parental species in DBH growth. PCH × POOC hybrid was, on average, 16 % superior to either parental species for DBH. Narrow-sense heritability estimates were low to moderate for growth traits (average of 0.27) and stem straightness (0.16). The estimated additive genetic correlations between growth traits and ages within traits were high (>0.8) and positive, providing confidence in early selection based on diameter at breast height. The high proportion of estimated additive genetic variance compared to dominance variance in the F1 pine hybrids suggests that breeding strategies that maximize the use of additive genetic variance may be effective. The ranking of the 11 PCH parents based on general hybridizing ability predictions (estimated breeding values as hybrids) was somewhat inconsistent between PTEC and POOC hybrid crosses for all traits (r 9 d.f. = 0.38–0.45; p ∼0.15–0.25). There was no evidence of practically important G × E interaction for the hybrids except for PCH × PTEC height growth. This study suggests that a single, multi-hybrid breeding population seems appropriate in Zimbabwe if the trial sites are representative of the planting target zone.

Data from: Genome reorganization in F1 hybrids uncovers the role of retrotransposons in reproductive isolation
Interspecific hybridization leads to new interactions among divergent genomes, revealing the nature of genetic incompatibilities having accumulated during and after the origin of species. Conflicts associated with misregulation of transposable elements (TEs) in hybrids expectedly result in their activation and genome-wide changes that may be key to species boundaries. Repetitive genomes of wild wheats have diverged under differential dynamics of specific long terminal repeat retrotransposons (LTR-RTs), offering unparalleled opportunities to address the underpinnings of plant genome reorganization by selfish sequences. Using reciprocal F1 hybrids between three Aegilops species, restructuring and epigenetic repatterning was assessed at random and LTR-RT sequences with amplified fragment length polymorphism and sequence-specific amplified polymorphisms as well as their methylation-sensitive counterparts, respectively. Asymmetrical reorganization of LTR-RT families predicted to cause conflicting interactions matched differential survival of F1 hybrids. Consistent with the genome shock model, increasing divergence of merged LTR-RTs yielded higher levels of changes in corresponding genome fractions and lead to repeated reorganization of LTR-RT sequences in F1 hybrids. Such non-random reorganization of hybrid genomes is coherent with the necessary repression of incompatible TE loci in support of hybrid viability and indicates that TE-driven genomic conflicts may represent an overlooked factor supporting reproductive isolation.
Data from: Dissecting the genetic architecture of F1 hybrid sterility in house mice
Hybrid sterility as a postzygotic reproductive isolation mechanism has been studied for over 80 years, yet the first identifications of hybrid sterility genes in Drosophila and mouse are quite recent. To study the genetic architecture of F_1 hybrid sterility between young subspecies of house mouse Mus m. domesticus and Mus m. musculus we conducted QTL analysis of a backcross between inbred strains representing these two subspecies and probed the role of individual chromosomes in hybrid sterility using the inter-subspecific chromosome substitution strains. We provide direct evidence that the asymmetry in male infertility between reciprocal crosses is conferred by the middle region of Mus m. musculus Chr X, thus excluding other potential candidates such as Y, imprinted genes, and mitochondrial DNA. QTL analysis identified strong hybrid sterility loci on Chr 17 and Chr X and predicted a set of interchangeable autosomal loci, a subset of which is sufficient to activate the Dobzhansky-Muller incompatibility of the strong loci. Overall, our results indicate the oligogenic nature of F_1 hybrid sterility, which should be amenable to reconstruction by proper combination of chromosome substitution strains. Such prefabricated model system should help to uncover the gene networks and molecular mechanisms underlying hybrid sterility.
