Single fathers sacrifice their broods and re-mate quickly in a socially monogamous cichlid

<p><span>When one of two parents disappears in the midst of caring for offspring, the remaining parent is left with several options. They can either i) desert the brood, ii) continue caring on their own and reject propositions from new potential partners, or iii) continue caring but remain receptive to re-mating opportunities. The presence of a brood may increase re-mating success of single parents, either because brood care is perceived as a signal of partner quality, or because prospective mates perceive the brood as a potential energy source. </span><span>In this field experiment, we used the socially monogamous, biparental cichlid fish <em>Variabilichromis</em> <em>moorii</em> to examine the re-mating strategy of males with or without dependent offspring after the loss of their female partner. Partner vacancies were filled quickly by new females, and these females engaged in high levels of affiliative behavior with the males. The new females engaged in territorial defense but focused primarily against intruding conspecifics, likely as a means to repel rivals. The males, in turn, took over the majority of territorial defense against intruding heterospecifics. Interestingly, males that still had offspring from their previous partnerships did not show aggression towards their new female partners, even when those females were infanticidal and cannibalizing the males' previous offspring. Overall, our experiment shows that single fathers of a biparental species will re-mate quickly even at the detriment of their current offspring.</span></p>

What do the Church Fathers, Scientific Fathers, and Military Fathers have in common?

<p>This paper will show how techniques and perspectives borrowed from other disciplines of history can answer some fundamental unanswered questions about the early Middle Ages. One such question seems simple enough, though its implications are profound: who were the Church Fathers for those living in the early Middle Ages? No one has hitherto answered this question, and indeed, it has almost never been posed. These &lsquo;Fathers&rsquo; were invoked again and again in theological works, in Church councils, in letters, in canon law, but their identity was only ever fleetingly addressed. Knowing who these figures were (and who they were not, and how and when this changed) obviously would tell us a great deal about early medieval intellectual culture, its preferences, its idea of authority, its changeability.<br> To delve into this problem, techniques first applied in the history of science offer an exciting new perspective and some interesting results. Creating network graphs of co-citations between scientists, for example, can reveal the structure of a particular field and its leading authorities in a given era, and accurately predict subsequent Nobel prizewinners. The same techniques can be adapted to map how Augustine, Jerome, Gregory the Great, and others (even Flavius Josephus!) stood relative to one another in the minds of early medieval scholars, and who was admitted to the inner circle of &lsquo;Church Fathers&rsquo;. Similar techniques can be applied to the circulation of texts in manuscript codices to yield equally interesting results. Detailed quantitative analysis of which authors circulated with which others can add to the &lsquo;networks&rsquo; generated by other techniques. Since volatilia ad sibi similia conveniunt (Eccl. 27.9: &lsquo;birds of a feather flock together&rsquo;), this too helps us to answer the question of who the Church Fathers were, besides much else.<br> Since the work presented in this paper was the result of frequent collaboration with historians in other disciplines, and gave rise to a large collaborative CFI-funded project (Sapientia, 2020&ndash;2023, UQAM), I will conclude by reflecting on the benefits of collaboration with non-medievalists in this realm. Our project aims to develop cross-disciplinary techniques for tracing manuscripts and early editions, as well as the reception of texts, networks of authorities, and so forth. By pooling resources, we can arrive more easily &ndash; and more convincingly &ndash; at a determination of not only who the Church Fathers were, but who were the greatest scientific figures of the 17th century, or the most important military thinkers of the 16th. Networking today better reveals the networks of yesterday.</p>

Data from: Offspring telomere length in the long lived Alpine swift is negatively related to the age of their biological father and foster mother

A growing body of studies is showing that offspring telomere length (TL) can be influenced by the age of their parents. Such a relationship might be explained by variation in TL at conception (gamete effect) and/or by alteration of early growth conditions in species providing parental care. In a long-lived bird with bi-parental care, the Alpine swift (Apus melba), we exchanged an uneven number of 2 to 4-day-old nestlings between pairs as part of a brood size manipulation. Nestling TL was measured at 50 days after hatching, which allowed investigation of the influence of the age of both their biological and foster parents on offspring TL, after controlling for the manipulation. Nestling TL was negatively related to the age of their biological father and foster mother. Nestling TL did not differ between enlarged and reduced broods. These findings suggest that offspring from older males were fertilized by gametes with shorter telomeres, presumably due to a greater cell division history or a longer accumulation of damage, and that older females may have provided poorer parental care to their offspring.

Kangaroo fathers modulate maternal control of offspring sex but not post-partum maternal expenditure

<p>When sons and daughters have different fitness costs and benefits, selection may favor deviations from an even offspring sex ratio. Most theories on sex ratio manipulation focus on maternal strategies and sex-biased maternal allocation. Recent studies report paternal influences on both offspring sex ratio and post-partum sex-biased maternal allocation. We used long-term data on marked kangaroos to investigate if and how paternal mass and skeletal size, both determinants of male reproductive success, influenced (a) offspring sex in interaction with maternal mass, and (b) post-partum sex-biased maternal allocation. When mothers were light, the probability of having a son increased with paternal mass. Heavy mothers showed the opposite trend. A similar result emerged when considering paternal size instead of mass. Post-partum maternal sex-specific allocation was independent of paternal mass or size. Studies of offspring sex manipulation or maternal allocation would benefit from an explicit consideration of paternal traits, as paternal and maternal effects can modulated each other.</p>

Data from: What doesn't kill you makes you stronger? Effects of paternal age at conception on fathers and sons

<p>Advancing male age is often hypothesised to reduce both, male fertility and offspring quality due to reproductive senescence. However, the effects of advancing male age on reproductive output and offspring quality are not always deleterious. For example, older fathers might buffer effects of reproductive senescence by terminally investing in reproduction. Similarly, males that survive to reproduce at an old age, might carry alleles that confer high viability (viability selection) which are then inherited by offspring, or might have high reproductive potential (selective disappearance). Differentiating these mechanisms requires an integrated experimental study of paternal survival and reproductive performance, as well as offspring quality, which is currently lacking. Using a cross-sectional study in <em>Drosophila melanogaster</em>, we test the effects of paternal age at conception (PAC) on paternal survival and reproductive success, and on the lifespans of sons. We discover that mating at an old age is linked with decreased future male survival, suggesting that mating-induced mortality is possibly due to old fathers being frail. We find no evidence for terminal investment, and show that reproductive senescence in fathers does not onset until their late-adult life. Additionally, we find that as a father's lifespan increases, his probability of siring offspring increases, for older PAC treatments only. Lastly, we show that sons born to older fathers live longer than those born to younger fathers, due to viability selection. Collectively, our results suggest that advancing paternal age is not necessarily associated with deleterious effects for offspring, and may even lead to older fathers producing longer-lived offspring.</p>
