Data from: Pervasive cropland in protected areas highlight trade-offs between conservation and food security
<p>Global cropland expansion over the last century caused widespread habitat loss and degradation. Establishment of protected areas aims to counteract the loss of habitats and to slow species extinctions. However, many protected areas also include high levels of habitat disturbance and conversion for uses such as cropland. Understanding where and why this occurs may realign conservation priorities and inform protected area policy in light of competing priorities such as food security. Here we use a new global synthesis cropland dataset to quantify cropland in protected areas globally, and assess their relationship to conservation aims and socio-environmental context. We estimate that cropland occupies 1.4 million km<sup>2</sup> or 6% of global protected area. Cropland occurs across all protected area management types, with 22% occurring in strictly protected areas. Cropland inside protected areas is more prevalent in countries with higher population density, lower income inequality, and with higher agricultural suitability of protected lands. While this phenomenon is dominant in mid-northern latitudes, areas of cropland in protected areas of the tropics and subtropics may present greater trade-offs due to higher levels of both biodiversity and food insecurity. Although area-based targets are prominent in biodiversity goal-setting, our results show that they can mask persistent anthropogenic land uses detrimental to native ecosystem conservation. To ensure the long-term efficacy of protected areas, post-2020 goal setting must link aims for biodiversity and human health and improve monitoring of conservation outcomes in cropland-impacted protected areas.</p>
Data from: Perceived impact of community kitchens on the food security of Syrian refugees and kitchen workers in Lebanon: Qualitative evidence in a displacement context
Community kitchens (CKs) have been recommended as public health strategies with social and nutritional health benefits for low-income participants and their families in different settings. The benefit of CKs in improving the food security status of participants in the context of conflict and displacement is less conclusive. This study aimed to qualitatively explore the impact of CKs on the food security status of community kitchen workers (CWs) and Syrian refugee (SR) families in Lebanon. An exploratory qualitative descriptive approach was adopted. Focus group discussions were conducted with 15 CWs and 49 SRs, and transcripts were analyzed thematically. Emerging themes included: motivation to join the CKs (CWs only), perception towards CKs, impact of these CKs, and their sustainability (both groups). Motivating factors for CWs included financial, internal and societal drivers, and the favorable type of work in kitchens. The perception towards CKs was overall positive among CWs and SR beneficiaries. Both groups reported the positive impact of CKs on their food security and financial status, which in turn affected positively their psychological health. At the social level, CWs indicated that the kitchen's friendly atmosphere increased social cohesion and companionship between Syrians and Lebanese within the kitchen. In addition, CWs reported increased sense of empathy towards SRs benefiting from the CK services. According to study participants, the positive impact of the CKs was almost completely reversed when their operation and services were interrupted for two months. Both CWs and SRs identified facilitators and barriers that can affect the sustainability of the kitchens, including financial and entrepreneurial skills. In conclusion, findings from this study highlight that CKs can be promising programs to improve the food security and livelihoods of participants, while also increasing social cohesion and integration of refugees within host communities in protracted crisis contexts.

The primary data includes data from the field which is compiled into different sections of the data management plan as follows.</p><ol><li>The socio-economic and demographic profile of the 2 Villages based on the <strong>PRA</strong> (Participatory Rural Appraisal).</li><li>The qualitative data from all types of farmers to understand the common issues and problems of the topic under research (owners as well as non-owners with all socio-economic categories) through <strong>FGD</strong> (Focused Group Discussion).</li><li>The qualitative data from <strong>Cases and Case Studies</strong> to get the deeper understanding of the research of farmers / incidence / processes from the villages to provide some unique insights to the research.</li><li>The qualitative data through <strong>Semi-Structured Interviews</strong> from other stakeholders to understand the issues and problems of the topic under research from their point of view.</li></ol>

The study however, discusses potential adaptation strategies, emphasizing the importance of sustainable agricultural practices, climate-resilient crop varieties, and community-based initiatives.</p>

Agri-Environmental Communication Interaction Strategic Link to Food Security Solution
<p>Developing countries face challenges of food production (food insecurity) and malnutrition on daily basis and this mainly affects women and children who are culprits of hunger and death. Kenya faces the worst scenario over food deficits and malnutrition. Meeting sustainable food requirements as it is in developed countries becomes an uphill task. Kenya imports more food grains such as maize, rice, sugar and wheat among others. Nearly 40% of our food stores contain imported foods. What could be the reason for this shortage of food? Information captured by local farmers indicates the scientific language used in training and instructing farmers is foreign and scientific hence difficult to conceptualize and interpret to a local environmental language that is simpleto understand and implement by farmers. Farmers therefore end up not doing the right things. This essential agri-environmental communication technique between farmers and instructional language complexity contributes significantly to poor agricultural output. The farmers' claim has been thinly covered in research studies regardingthe food production system. This is the reason for carrying out this research. This paper seeks to address the claim that agri-environmental communication interaction can be key to enhancing food production and nutrition as well as improving human health. The objective was to find out the causes of low food production dueto lack of agri-environmental communication interaction; To assess the effect of food insecurity and malnutrition on human health due to agri-environmental communication interactions and to make recommendations towards enhancing food production and nutrition in improving human health in Kenya through agri-environmental communication interaction. The research study and data was collected from secondary sources, media observations and focus group discussions from the forty-seven counties in Kenya. The findings revealed that, food production is very low due to poor communication in scientific agricultural terminologies interpretation inlocal language for effective use by farmers. The recommendation is that, government and stakeholders should take action and improve on effective agri- environmental communication interaction in order to solve food insecurity and malnutrition. The scientific language used in instructions product labels should include local languages.</p>
