Data and Code for the Manuscript: Aquatic insects balance growth with future supply of algal food resources

Some consumers depend on the contemporaneous growth of the resources they feed on. For example, Tanytarsus gracilentus midges feed on algae, and because midge generation time is much longer than that of algae, midges benefit not just from the standing stock but also from the growth of algae. This implies that an intermediate consumption rate maximizes midge somatic growth: low consumption rates constrain midge growth, whereas high consumption rates reduce algae and future food abundance. In an experiment, we manipulated midge presence and initial algal abundance. We found that midges could suppress algal growth, as measured by changes in algal primary production (GPP). We also found a positive relationship between GPP and midge growth. We then fit a consumer-resource model to the experimental data, which showed the expected hump-shaped relationship between midge consumption rates and their somatic growth. In the model, projected midge growth rates were only positively associated with GPP when midge consumption was below the value that optimized midge growth. Therefore, the observed relationship between instantaneous primary production and midge growth seen in the experiment suggests that midges did not overexploit algae. This work highlights the challenges faced by consumers that depend on contemporaneously growing resources.

Data from: The plastic fly: the effect of sustained fluctuations in adult food supply on life history traits
Many adult traits in Drosophila melanogaster show phenotypic plasticity, and the effects of diet on traits such as lifespan and reproduction are well explored. Although plasticity in response to food is still present in older flies, it is unknown how sustained environmental variation affects life-history traits. Here, we explore how such life-long fluctuations of food supply affect weight and survival in groups of flies and affect weight, survival and reproduction in individual flies. In both experiments, we kept adults on constant high or low food and compared these to flies that experienced fluctuations of food either once or twice a week. For these 'yoyo' groups, the initial food level and the duration of the dietary variation differed during adulthood, creating four 'yoyo' fly groups. In groups of flies, survival and weight were affected by adult food. However, for individuals, survival and reproduction, but not weight, were affected by adult food, indicating that single and group housing of female flies affects life-history trajectories. Remarkably, both the manner and extent to which life-history traits varied in relation to food depended on whether flies initially experienced high or low food after eclosion. We therefore conclude that the expression of life-history traits in adult life is affected not only by adult plasticity, but also by early adult life experiences. This is an important but often overlooked factor in studies of life-history evolution and may explain variation in life-history experiments.

Potential Impacts of Climate Change on World Food Supply: Datasets from a Major Crop Modeling Study
The Potential Impacts of Climate Change on World Food Supply: Datasets from a Major Crop Modeling Study contain projected country and regional changes in grain crop yields due to global climate change. Equilibrium and transient scenarios output from General Circulation Models (GCMs) with three levels of farmer adaptations to climate change were utilized to generate crop yield estimates of wheat, rice, coarse grains (barley and maize), and protein feed (soybean) at 125 agricultural sites representing major world agricultural regions. Projected yields at the agricultural sites were aggregated to major trading regions, and fed into the Basic Linked Systems (BLS) global trade model to produce country and regional estimates of potential price increases, food shortages, and risk of hunger. These datasets are produced by the Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) and are distributed by the Columbia University Center for International Earth Science Information Network (CIESIN).
