A Genetic Algorithm Approach to Regenerate Image from a Reduce Scaled Image Using Bit Data Count-Figure 4. Image regeneration using GA

<p>In 2008, Roger Johansson was able to regenerate a Mona Lisa image from random sampling (Roger Johansson, 2017). It uses a genetic algorithm to model a population of individuals, each containing a string of DNA which can be visualized in the form of an image (Grow Your Own Picture Genetic Algorithms &amp; Generative Art, 2017).</p> <p>By starting with a population consisting of a randomly generated gene pool, each individual is compared to the reference image (the one on the left), and the individuals can then be ranked by their likeness to it, known as their &quot;fitness&quot;, with the best fit being displayed on the output image (the one on the right) (Grow Your Own Picture Genetic Algorithms &amp; Generative Art, 2017). By breeding the fittest individuals from the population, the DNA which produces the most accurate representation of the reference image is selected over successive generations, effectively demonstrating the power of a natural selection process to produce the best candidate for any given environment (Grow Your Own Picture Genetic Algorithms &amp; Generative Art, 2017).</p>

EAP21-0576.R1 - Implementing Community-Engaged Ecological Research in Proctor Creek, an Urban Watershed in Atlanta, GA

The Southeast Region of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) implemented community-engaged research in Proctor Creek, an urban watershed in Northwest Atlanta, Georgia, to sample for aquatic species of concern in Atlanta, Georgia’s Proctor Creek Watershed as a part of the Urban Waters Federal Partnership program. This research shifted the focus of the agency from the endangered and pristine natural spaces to a major city watershed negatively impacted by urbanization and other human influences for more than a century. Team members from USFWS, Proctor Creek Watershed residents, local students, and other stakeholders in the UWFP spent three months conducting stream surveys and participating in community-led events to build relationships and learn community priorities. The team collected data at 11 sites throughout the Proctor Creek Watershed, visually assessed each site, and collected aquatic species using dip nets, seines, and traps. We observed approximately 28 aquatic species, including 13 unique fish species, and eight macroinvertebrate species, including two unique crayfish species. We also observed varying degrees of ecological health throughout the watershed. Native aquatic animal species were found at all stream sites, no matter the condition of the stream. Through creating training resources and disseminating data among team members for future sampling, the team established pathways to keep natural resource stewardship sustainable outside of direct federal involvement. Through engaging in community-engaged research to achieve the mission of the agency, the USFWS Proctor Creek watershed survey helped shift the paradigm of how government agencies can connect their mission statements to the ever-changing complex needs of the American public.

Turbidity of a Salt Marsh within the Altamaha River estuary, GA, USA, 2015-2017

We measured turbidity along a transect from channel to marsh interior for 1 year, beginning in June 2016 at a salt mash in the Altamaha River estuary. We measured turbidity (NTU) with three optical back scatter sensors to in a shore normal transect, with one in the channel (YSI 6600), and two on the marsh surface. The “marsh edge sensor” was 2.4m from the channel edge (Seapoint, RBR Solo) and the “marsh interior sensor” was 18m from the edge (Seapoint, RBR Duo; Figure 1c). The sensors measured every 15 minutes and were equipped with automatic wipers to reduce biofouling. Following retrieval, the turbidity time series data was filtered to remove any erroneous points and times when the sensors were fouled or exposed (Ganju et al. 2005). Turbidity was then calibrated to suspended sediment concentration with local sediment resulting in the calibration equation SSC (mg/L) =1.33*Sensor Turbidity (NTU) (R2=0.9345, n=26, p<<0.001).

Data from: Diverse communities of bacteria and archaea flourished in Palaeoarchaean (3.5-3.3 Ga) microbial mats

<p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Limited taxonomic classification is possible for Archaean microbial mats and this is a fundamental limitation in constraining early ecosystems. Applying Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), a powerful tool for identifying vibrational motions attributable to specific functional groups, we characterised fossilised biopolymers in 3.5-3.3 Ga microbial mats from the Barberton greenstone belt (South Africa). Microbial mats from four Palaeoarchaean horizons exhibit significant differences in taxonomically informative aliphatic contents, despite high aromaticity. This reflects precursor biological heterogeneity since all horizons show equally exceptional preservation and underwent similar grades of metamorphism. Low methylene to end-methyl (CH2/CH3) absorbance ratios in mats from the 3.472 Ga Middle Marker horizon signify short, highly branched <i>n</i>-alkanes interpreted as isoprenoid chains forming archaeal membranes. Mats from the 3.45 Ga Hooggenoeg Chert H5c, 3.334 Ga Footbridge Chert, and 3.33 Ga Josefsdal Chert exhibit higher CH2/CH3ratios suggesting longer, unbranched fatty acids from bacterial lipid precursors. Absorbance ratios of end-methyl to methylene (CH3/CH2) in Hooggenoeg, Josefsdal and Footbridge mats yield a range of values (0.20-0.80) suggesting mixed bacterial and archaeal architect communities based on comparison with modern examples. Higher (0.78-1.25) CH3/CH2 ratios in the Middle Marker mats identify Archaea. This exceptional preservation reflects early, rapid silicification preventing the alteration of biogeochemical signals inherited from biomass. Since silicification commenced during the lifetime of the microbial mat, FTIR signals estimate the affinities of the architect community and may be used in the reconstruction of Archaean ecosystems. Together, these results show that Bacteria and Archaea flourished together in Earth's earliest ecosystems.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p>

Then, using information about the diffraction projection center, 20 to 100 independent reflectors were reconstructed in the reciprocal space. The final step involves a search for primitive lattice vectors which are fulfilling translational symmetry conditions for all reflectors.
