Assessing the effectiveness of urban ecosystems to prioritise nature-based interventions in a high-density urban area
Data from: Ageing gracefully: physiology but not behaviour changes with age in a diving seabird
A higher proportion of long-lived animals die from senescence than short-lived animals, yet many long-lived homeotherms show few signs of physiological aging in the wild. This may, however, differ in long-lived diving homeotherms that frequently encounter hypoxic conditions and have very high metabolic rates. To examine aging within a long-lived diving homeotherm, we studied resting metabolism and thyroid hormones (N = 43), blood oxygen stores (N = 93), and foraging behaviour (N = 230) of thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia). Because murres dive exceptionally deep for their size and have a very high metabolism, we expected that aging murres would show signs of physiological senescence. We paid particular attention to resting metabolism as we argue that these maintenance costs reflect those experienced during deep dives. Blood oxygen stores (hematocrit), resting metabolic rate and thyroid hormone levels all declined significantly with age in incubating murres 3-30 years of age. In birds measured longitudinally three years apart, thyroid hormone levels and hematocrit were both significantly lower, suggesting progressive changes within individuals rather than selective disappearance of individuals with high metabolic rates. Within our longitudinal dataset, we found no effect of age on dive depth, dive shape, or behavioural aerobic dive limit. A meta-analysis of changes in resting metabolism with age across 15 animal species demonstrated that such declines are pervasive across most of the kingdom. The rate of decline was highest in species with high energy expenditure supporting a linkage between metabolism and senescence. Physiological changes occurred in tandem with advancing age in murres, but offset each other such that there was no detectable decline in behavioural performance.

Terrestrial water storage deficits during the GRACE and GRACE-FO gap

This datasets provide predictions of the terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSAs) during the 11-month gap (July 2017-May 2018) between the GRACE satellite and its follow-on GRACE-FO. The predictions were obtained by a hydroclimatic data-driven Bayesian convolutional neural network driven. The training period is April 2002-March 2014. Based on the predicted TWSAs, the terrestrial water storage deficit (WSD) dataset and its standardized version, the WSD index (WSDI) dataset, are also provided.

The GIF animation depicts the GRACE and BCNN TWSAs in the 70 testing months (April 2014-June 2017 and June 2018-December 2020) and the 11-month gap (July 2017-May 2018).

Data-driven gap filling and spatio-temporal filtering of the GRACE and GRACE-FO records

Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment and Follow On (GRACE/-FO) global monthly measurements of Earth's gravity field have led to significant advances in quantifying mass transfer. However, a significant temporal gap between missions hinders evaluating long-term mass variations. Moreover, instrumental and processing errors translate into large non-physical North-South stripes polluting geophysical signals. We use Multichannel Singular Spectrum Analysis (M-SSA) to overcome both issues by exploiting spatio-temporal information of Level-2 GRACE/-FO solutions, filtered using the DDK7 decorrelation and a new complementary filter, built based on the residual noise between fully processed data and a parametric fit to observations. Using an iterative M-SSA on Equivalent Water Height (EWH) time series processed by CSR, GFZ, GRAZ, and JPL, we replace missing data and outliers to obtain a combined evenly sampled solution. Then, we apply M-SSA to retrieve common signals between each EWH time series and its same-latitude neighbours to further reduce residual spatially uncorrelated noise. Comparing GRACE/-FO M-SSA solution with SLR and SWARM low-degree Earth’s gravity field and hydrological model demonstrates its ability to satisfyingly fill missing observations. Our solution achieves a noise level comparable to mass concentration (mascon) solutions over oceans (3.2 mm EWH), without requiring \textit{a priori} information nor regularisation. While short-wavelength signals are challenging to capture using highly filtered spherical harmonics or mascons solutions, we show that our technique efficiently recovers localized mass variations using well-documented mass transfers associated with reservoir impoundments.

Global reconstructions of the GRACE-like terrestrial water storage anomalies

These datasets provide global (excluding Antarctica) reconstructions of the GRACE-like terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA) from April 2002 to July 2021 with a spatial resolution of 1 degree.

These reconstructed TWSAs were generated by a two-step linear model. The driving data include the ERA5-Land model-extracted precipitation and air temperature data, as well as the Noah model-simulated TWSA. The training period is from April 2002 to April 2013, and the testing period is from May 2013 to July 2021.

‘REC-JPL-M’ means the reconstructed TWSA based on the JPL mascon solution; ‘REC-JPL-SH’ means the reconstructed TWSA based on the JPL spherical harmonic solution.
