Data from: Climate warming and sea turtle sex ratios across the globe

<p><span>Climate warming and the feminisation of populations due to temperature-dependent sex determination may threaten sea turtles with extinction. To identify sites of heightened risk, we examined sex ratio data and patterns of climate change over multiple decades for 64 nesting sites spread across the globe. Over the last 62 years the mean change in air temperature was 0.85 °C per century (SD = 0.65 °C, range = -0.53 to +2.5 °C, n = 64 nesting sites). Temperatures increased at 40 of the 64 study sites. Female-skewed hatchling or juvenile sex ratios occurred at 57 of the 64 sites, with skews &gt; 90% female at 17 sites. We did not uncover a relationship between the extent of warming and sex ratio (r62 = -0.03, p = 0.802, n = 64 nesting sites). Hence, our results suggest that female-hatchling sex ratio skews are not simply a consequence of recent warming but have likely persisted at some sites for many decades. So other factors aside from recent warming must drive these variations in sex ratios across nesting sites, such as variations in nesting behaviour (e.g., nest depth), substrate (e.g., sand albedo), shading available and rainfall patterns. While overall across sites recent warming is not linked to hatchling sex ratio, at some sites there is both is a high female skew and high warming, such as Raine Island (Australia; 99% female green turtles; 1.27 °C warming per century), nesting beaches in Cyprus (97.1% female green turtles; 1.68 °C warming per century), and in the Dutch Caribbean (St Eustatius; 91.5% female leatherback turtles; 1.15 °C warming per century). These may be among the first sites where management intervention is needed to increase male production. Continued monitoring of sand temperatures and sex ratios are recommended to help identify when high incubation temperatures threaten population viability.</span></p>

GLOBE Mosquito Habitat Mapper Citizen Science Data 2017-2020

<p>Three Cases: Metadata and Procedures</p> <p>The data sets described here were used in an article submitted to the journal GeoHealth in 2021. The data files and further supplemental links (including general information about GLOBE data) can be accessed at https://observer.globe.gov/get-data/mosquito-habitat-data.</p> <p>Case 1: Removal of records with suspect geolocation data. A Python script was applied to remove records where the measured position (in decimal degrees) was identical to the GLOBE MGRS site position. GPS-obtained latitude and longitude coordinates are reported in decimal degrees, so records identified by whole numbers were also removed. This procedure removed 5704 (23%) of the 24983 records in the Mosquito Habitat Mapper database, with 19,279 records remaining. The secondary data sets cleaned only for geolocation anomalies were labeled Case 1.</p> <p>Case 2: Identifying suspected training events. For this test, we sought to identify groups of data that exceeded 10 records sharing these characteristics. Another Python script was employed to extract the photos for ease of visual inspection. Because we needed to manually review the photo records, we set the threshold for groups at &gt;10, so that the analysis could be completed in the time allotted. Groups identified thought this procedure were outputted as case 2: groups. The resulting data set cleaned of groups &gt;10 was labeled Case 2. The resulting data set included 20,006 records and identified 2,447 records found in clusters we postulated were training events.</p> <p>Case 3: The Case 3 secondary dataset result from applying the Python scripts used to create Cases 1 and 2. We used the Case 3 data sets, with improved geolocation and large groups eliminated, in the following analysis.</p> <p>Acknowledgments: These data were obtained from NASA and the GLOBE Program and are freely available for use in research, publications and commercial applications. <p>Dataset to the Article: Creating virtual forest around the globe and analysing their state space with the Forest Factory 2.0</p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>Forests, as one of the most important carbon sinks on earth, are more and more under stress by environmental changes. The dynamics of forests and consequently their functions in general, begin to change. We therefore present a recent model development, called &quot;Forest Factory 2.0&quot;, which generates various virtual forest stands for different biomes on earth. This approach allows to generate forests using the architecture and processes of forest models (here we use individual based gap model FORMIND). Using Forest Factory 2.0, we generated 700,000 forest stands in seven different ecoregions. In contrast to the tradition of investigating the development of individual forest stands over time, we used the Forest Factory 2.0 as a tool to gain knowledge about forests by analyzing the state space of forests. We conducted a structural sensitivity analysis to compare the relationships between structural properties and Biomass, productivity, as well as Species evenness of forests. In this study we analyse the state space of forests in different biomes and demonstrate the potential of this approach for theoretical ecology.</p>

The role of phylogenetic structure on Canidae lineage distribution and trait variation across the globe

<p>Aim: Understanding the spatial structuring of ecological communities requires us to consider the interplay between evolutionary history and environmental factors. In this study, we investigated the influence of Canidae phylogenetic structure on the distribution and trait patterns of lineages across the planet.</p> <p>Location: Americas, Africa, Eurasia.</p> <p>Time period: 12 million years ago - present.</p> <p>Major taxa studied: Canidae.</p> <p>Methods: Using distribution data and phylogenetic information for 37 Canidae species, we employed phylogenetic fuzzy-weighting to compare assemblages based on their phylogenetic similarity. </p> <p>Results: Our results revealed distinct global patterns of body size, body mass, range size, habitat type, and evolutionary distinctiveness among lineages. We also identified the shared contributions of phylogenetic structure and temperature to trait variation using variance partitioning analysis. The PCPS axes highlighted the influence of phylogenetic relationships on Canidae assemblages, particularly in South America.</p> <p>Main conclusions: Notably, the study challenges the applicability of Bergmann's and Rapoport's rules in explaining canids' sizes and range sizes geographic variation across continents, emphasizing the importance of phylogenetic information. The unique diversification history of Canidae in South America and Africa and their diverse environmental conditions likely contribute to the observed trait patterns that make both continents so distinguished when compared to N. America and Eurasia. Our findings underscore the need to incorporate phylogenetic information in models assessing trait variation across geographic scales for unbiased estimations.</p>

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Santa Rita Experimental Range (SRE) contains plant cover of Mammillaria (globe cactus) measurements in percent units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.
