Following on emerging understanding of the diversification process, many recent workers have considered infraspecific taxa as valuable for formally recognizing incompletely speciated entities. The distinction between a species and an infraspecific taxon represents a fundamentally subjective weighting of evidence, yet this points further to the need for an evidential basis for these decisions. We explore these concepts in Heuchera longiflora (Saxifragaceae), which is morphologically variable and has a disjunct range across several physiographic provinces in the eastern U.S. using a tiered sampling approach and a combination of Sanger and next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques. We investigated 56 populations with seven markers to investigate population structure, and for a subset of 12 representative populations we sequenced 277 nuclear markers to characterize gene tree discord. Using a variety of methods to overcome high levels of gene conflict, we find evidence for the traditionally recognized taxa H. longiflora var. longiflora and H. longiflora var. aceroides in molecular and morphological data partitions. Our results comprise a case study on the use of multiple sources of data and analytical methods to delimit infraspecific taxa.

<p><span>Here I describe a new species narrowly endemic to high-altitude limestone outcrops of the Sierra Madre Oriental, Coahuila, Mexico, together with a phylogenomic and morphometric evaluation of the <em>Heuchera</em> species of northeastern Mexico. Originally thought to be a disjunct population of <em>Heuchera</em> <em>sanguinea</em>, the new species is phylogenetically and morphologically most similar to <em>Heuchera</em> <em>lakelae</em>; from which it is distinguished based on morphometric characters and other morphological attributes, phylogenetic placement, geographic range, phenology, and ecological preferences.</span></p>

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest (AND) contains plant cover of Heuchera micrantha measurements in percent units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

<p>A new species of Heuchera (Saxifragaceae) from western North Carolina is described and illustrated herein, including phylogenomic and morphological analyses of its closest allies in the Heuchera parviflora group. Heuchera tuckasegeensis is distinguished from the other Heuchera taxa based on its distinct morphological attributes (style and stamen length, petiole and laminar hair length, and degree of leaf lobing), phylogenetic position, habitat preferences, and edaphic substrate specialization.</p>
