High resolution maps of climatological parameters for analyzing the impacts of climatic changes on Swiss forests

Assessing the impacts of climatic changes on forests requires the analysis of actual climatology within the forested area. In mountainous areas, climatological indices vary markedly with the micro-relief, i.e. with altitude, slope, and aspect. Consequently, when modelling potential shifts of altitudinal belts in mountainous areas due to climatic changes, maps with a high spatial resolution of the underlying climatological indices are fundamental. Here we present a set of maps of climatological indices with a spatial resolution of 25 by 25 m. The presented dataset consists of maps of the following parameters: average daily temperature high and low in January, April, July, and October as well as of the year; seasonal and annual thermal continentality; first and last freezing day; frost-free vegetation period; relative air humidity; solar radiation; and foehn conditions. The parameters represented in the maps have been selected in a knowledge engineering approach. The maps show the climatology of the periods 1961-1990 and 1981-2010. The data can be used for statistical analyses of forest climatology, for developing tree distribution models, and for assessing the impacts of climatic changes on Swiss forests.

High-resolution maps of material stock, population and employment in Austria from 1985 to 2018

Global societal material stocks such as buildings and infrastructure accumulated rapidly within recent decades, along with population growth. Material stocks constitute the physical basis of most socio-economic activities and services, such as mobility, housing, health, or education. The dynamics of stock growth, and its relation to the population that demands those services, is an essential indicator for long-term societal resource use and patterns of emissions. The creation of societal material stock creates path dependencies for future resource use, with an important impact on how the transformation towards sustainable societies can succeed.

This dataset features detailed maps of material stock and population, as well as the distribution of jobs, for Austria on a 30m grid. The data is based on recent maps of material stock and building volume (compare to Haberl et al. 2021, doi: 10.1021/acs.est.0c05642, data: https://zenodo.org/record/4522892), recent and historic census data, and a time series of Landsat TM, ETM+, and OLI Earth Observation data.

Temporal extent

The data contains annual maps from 1985 to 2018.

Data format and units

Per Austrian federal state, the data come in tiles of 30x30km. High-Resolution Pan-European Forest Structure Maps: An Integration of Earth Observation and National Forest Inventory Data

We developed Pan-European maps of timber volume (V), above-ground biomass (AGB), and deciduous-coniferous proportion (DCP) with a pixel size of 10 x 10 m2 for the reference year 2020 using a combination of a Sentinel 2 mosaic, Copernicus layers, and National Forest Inventory (NFI) data.

For mapping, we used the k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN, k=7) approach with a harmonized database of species-specific V and AGB from 14 NFIs across Europe. This database encompasses approximately 151,000 sample plots, which were intersected with the above-mentioned Earth observation data. The maps cover 40 European countries, forming a continuous coverage of the western part of the European continent.

A sample of 1/3 of NFI plots was left out for validation, whereas 2/3 of the plots were used for mapping. Maps were created independently for 13 multi-country processing areas. Root-mean-squared-errors (RMSEs) for AGB ranged from 53 % in the Nordic processing area to 73 % the South-Eastern area.

The created maps are the first of their kind as they are utilizing a huge amount of harmonized NFI observations and consistent remote sensing data for high-resolution forest attribute mapping. While the published maps can be useful for visualization and other purposes, they are primarily meant as auxiliary information in model-assisted estimation where model-related biases can be mitigated, and field-based estimates improved. Therefore, additional calibration procedures were not applied, and especially high V and AGB values tend to be underestimated. Summarizing map values (pixel counting) over large regions such as countries or whole Europe will consequently result in biased estimates that need to be interpreted with care.

The author list is sorted by last name except for the first and last authors who also serve as corresponding authors.

Corresponding authors: Jukka.Miettinen@vtt.fi, Johannes.Breidenbach@nibio.no

High-resolution global map of closed-canopy coconut palm

The file ‘GlobalCoconutLayer_2020_v1-2.zip’ contains 878 raster tiles of 100x100 km in geotiff format. The raster files are the result of a convolutional neural network that classified Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 annual composites into a coconut palm layer for the year 2020. The images have a spatial resolution of 20 meters and contain two classes:
[0] Other land covers that are not coconut palm.
[1] Coconut palm.

The file ‘GlobalCoconutLayer_2020_densityMap_1km_v1-2.zip’ contains the 20-meter coconut palm classification aggregated to 1 km. The value of each pixel represents the coconut palm area (in squared meters) within the 1-km pixel.

The file ‘Validation_points_GlobalCoconutLayer_2020_v1-2.shp’ includes the 10,200 points that were used to validate the product. Each point includes the attribute ‘Class’, which is the class assigned by visual interpretation of sub-meter resolution images, and the attribute ‘predClass’, which reflects the predicted class by the convolutional neural network. The ‘predClass’ values are the same as the raster files:
[0] Other land covers that are not coconut palm.
[1] Coconut palm.
The attribute ‘Class’ contains the following values:
[0] Land cover could not be determined because sub-meter resolution data was not available.
[1] Other land covers that are not coconut palm.
[2] Sparse coconut palm. Low density of coconut palms; between 1 and 4 coconut palms within the 20-meter pixel.
[3] Dense open-canopy coconut palm; more than 4 coconut palms within the 20-meter pixel but coconut trees do not reach the full canopy closure.
[4] Closed -canopy coconut palm; more than 4 coconut palms within the 20-meter pixel and coconut palms fully cover the ground.
[5] Palm species that are not coconut palm.

Changelog v1-2:

- Pixels classified as class ‘coconut’ were reclassified to class ‘other’ in West Bengal.

Enhancing High-Resolution Forest Stand Mean Height Mapping in China through an Individual Tree-Based Approach with Close-Range LiDAR Data

We have developed a tree-based approach to create spatially continuous forest stand mean height maps across China through integrating high-point density, high-precision close-range LiDAR data and multisource remote sensing data. The accuracy analysis of the arithmetic mean height (Ha) and the weighted mean height (Hw) demonstrates the feasibility of the proposed method. A practical framework for forestry investigation based on close-range LiDAR was proposed. The mean values of Ha and Hw are 13.3 ± 3.3 m 11.3 ± 2.9 m on pixel level, respectively. Validation based on LiDAR and field sample data shows that the RMSE values, range from 2.6 to 4.1 m for Ha and 2.9 to 4.3 m for Hw, respectively, indicating that our approach outperforms existing forest canopy height maps derived from area-based approaches. Hopefully, our methods and maps will serve as a foundation for estimating carbon storage, monitoring changes in forest structure, managing forest inventory, and assessing wildlife habitat availability.

High-resolution mapping of the period landscape reveals polymorphism in cell cycle frequency tuning

Biological oscillators adapt to environmental changes with widely tunable frequencies, a property theoretical studies attributed to positive feedbacks. However, no experiments have tested this theory. Here, we created synthetic cells to independently tune the frequency and feedback strength of a cell-cycle oscillator, enabling continuous mapping of period landscape in response to network perturbations. We found that although inhibiting positive feedback of cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk1) reduces the tunability, the reduction is not as significant as theoretically predicted, and the Cdk1-counteracting phosphatase, PP2A, provides additional machinery to ensure frequency regulation. Additionally, cells exhibit polymorphic responses to PP2A inhibition, showing a monomodal distribution of oscillatory cells at low or high PP2A inhibition or a bimodal distribution at both low and high inhibitions. We explained the polymorphism by a model of two interlinked bistable switches of Cdk1 and PP2A where cell-cycle oscillations exhibit two modes in the presence or absence of PP2A bistability.

Molecular dynamics simulations in: High-resolution structures with bound Mn2+ and Cd2+ map the metal import pathway in an Nramp transporter

Transporters of the Nramp (Natural resistance-associated macrophage protein) family import divalent transition metal ions into cells of most organisms. By supporting metal homeostasis, Nramps prevent disorders related to metal insufficiency or overload. Previous studies revealed that Nramps take on a LeuT fold and identified the metal-binding site. We present high- resolution structures of Deinococcus radiodurans Nramp in three stable conformations of the transport cycle revealing that global conformational changes are supported by distinct coordination geometries of its physiological substrate, Mn2+, across conformations and conserved networks of polar residues lining the inner and outer gates. A Cd2+-bound structure highlights differences in coordination geometry for Mn2+ and Cd2+. Measurements of metal binding using isothermal titration calorimetry indicate that the thermodynamic landscape for binding and transporting physiological metals like Mn2+ is different and more robust to perturbation than for transporting the toxic Cd2+ metal.
