IODP Expedition 356 Spectrophotometry
Interstitial water constitutents were measured by UV-VIS spectrometry using colorimetric methods (e.g., ammonium, nitrate, nitrite, phosphate, silica, and sulfide) by an Agilent CARY 100 UV-VIS spectrophotometer.
IODP Expedition 356 RGB channels (calculated from core photos)
Red, green, and blue pixel data were extracted from Section Half Imaging Logger (SHIL) linescan images, typically binned at 0.5 cm resolution using the central 2 cm of the image.
IODP Expedition 356 Thin section images
Hard rock and sediment thin section images were acquired using either the JRSO-developed Petrographic Image Capture and Archival Tool (PICAT) imager or (rarely) an upright microscope and a digital camera. Sample images are acquired in unpolarized, polarized, and/or cross-polarized light. Image files are presented compressed by hole.
IODP Expedition 356 Alkalinity and pH
Alkalinity was determined by Gran titration with an autotitrator (Metrohm 794 basic Titrino) using 0.1 M HCl at 20 degrees C. Report includes alkalinity, correction factor (if applicable), and pH.
IODP Expedition 356 P-wave velocity caliper (discrete)
P-wave velocity data were measured on undisturbed section halves (JRSO-defined x-axis) and/or discrete cube and cylinder samples (x, y, or z-axis) using pairs of piezoelectric transducers mounted on a caliper system. Report includes P-wave velocity in x, y, and/or z-direction, caliper separation, traveltime between transucers, and first arrival picks.
IODP Expedition 356 X-ray diffraction (XRD)
X-ray diffraction (XRD) is used to identify minerals and their proportions in sediment or hard rock sample powders on a Bruker AXS D4 Endeavor X-ray diffractometer. Results are returned as diffractograms in a viewable format (either PDF or PNG).
IODP Expedition 356 Thermal conductivity
Thermal conductivity was measured using the heated needle method in either full-space needle configuration (soft/saturated sediments) or half-space needle configuration (harder materials) of a TeKa Berlin TK-04 thermal conductivity meter. Heat is applied to the sample and then thermal equilibrium is sought. The heating and equilibration curve is reduced to derive the thermal conductivity value. Raw data are stored if a user wishes to do off-line or postexpedition reduction.
IODP Expedition 356 P-wave velocity caliper (section)
P-wave velocity data were measured on undisturbed section halves (JRSO-defined x-axis) and/or discrete cube and cylinder samples (x, y, or z-axis) using pairs of piezoelectric transducers mounted on a caliper system. Report includes P-wave velocity in x, y, and/or z-direction, caliper separation, traveltime between transucers, and first arrival picks.
IODP Expedition 356 Scanning electron microscope images
Microscopic images of discrete samples were acquired using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and captured as image files. These files were uploaded along with a brief description and a record of the microscopic conditions when the image was taken.
IODP Expedition 356 Core orientation
Core orientation data were measured downhole during advanced piston corer (APC) coring, either by Minex FlexIT or Icefield MI-5 core orientation tool. These tools measure magnetic strength and orientation, 3-axis accelerometer data, and tool temperature data.
IODP Expedition 356 Compressional strength (penetrometer)
Compressional strength was measured on section halves using a Humbolt Manufacturing Pocket Penetrometer. The penetrometer is only suitable for sediment not affected by cementation (i.e., saturated, clay-rich, soft sediment). Shear strength can be calculated from the measured compressional strength. Compressional strength measurements should be considered only approximate, particularly because the influence of pore pressure changes during the undrained experiment cannot be estimated. Report includes compressional strength results, penetration direction, and adapter foot information.
IODP Expedition 356 P-wave velocity logger (whole round)
P-wave velocity data were measured on whole-round sections on the Whole-Round Multisensor Logger (WRMSL) using pairs of piezoelectric transducers mounted on a caliper system. Measurements may be affected by degassing of pore fluid and microfracturing during core recovery. Report includes P-wave velocity in x-y plane and distance and traveltime between transducers.
IODP Expedition 356 Color reflectance
Color reflectance data were measured on section halves using an integration sphere and a UV-VIS spectrophotometer mounted on the Section Half Multisensor Logger (SHMSL). Spectral counts are recorded in the range of 380 to 700 nm, covering the visible spectrum, and binned in ~2 nm bins. Spectral data are reduced from spectra and recorded in tristimulus XYZ values, CieLAB L*a*b* values, and other units.
IODP Expedition 356 Section summary
Report includes data for individual core sections: coring/drilling depths and recovery, database identifiers for the whole section and section halves, and number of samples taken from the section before and after splitting.
IODP Expedition 356 Vane shear strength (Torvane)
Sediment strength was measured on section halves using a Humbolt Manufacturing Torvane handheld instrument. The Torvane is suitable for sediment not affected by cementation (i.e., saturated, clay-rich, soft sediment).
IODP Expedition 356 Stratigraphic Correlation
Affine and splice files created for stratigraphic correlation.
IODP Expedition 356 Hole drilling summary
Report includes detailed drilling data: BHA length, bit parameters, and primary depth measurements.
IODP Expedition 356 Hole summary
Report lists hole data: location, water depth, drilling, coring system, and core recovery.
IODP Expedition 356 Salinity
Salinity was measured on interstitial water (IW) samples using an optical refractometer.
IODP Expedition 356, Hole U1464C - Well Logging Data

Logging data are measurements of physical properties of the formation surrounding a borehole, acquired in situ after completion of coring (wireline logging) or during drilling (Logging-While-Drilling, LWD). The range of data (resistivity, gamma radiation, velocity, density, borehole images,…) in any hole depends on the scientific objectives and operational constraints.
