Dataset for Report: "The Increasing Prominence of Prejudice and Social Justice Rhetoric in UK News Media"
<p>This data set contains frequency counts of target words in 16 million news and opinion articles from 10 popular news media outlets in the United Kingdom. The target words are listed in the associated report and are mostly words that denote prejudice or are often associated with social justice discourse. A few additional words not denoting prejudice are also available since they are used in the report for illustration purposes of the method.</p> <p>The textual content of news and opinion articles from the outlets is available in the outlet's online domains and/or public cache repositories such as Google cache (https://webcache.googleusercontent.com), The Internet Wayback Machine (https://archive.org/web/web.php), and Common Crawl (https://commoncrawl.org). We used derived word frequency counts from these sources. Textual content included in our analysis is circumscribed to articles headlines and main body of text of the articles and does not include other article elements such as figure captions.</p> <p>Targeted textual content was located in HTML raw data using outlet specific xpath expressions. Tokens were lowercased prior to estimating frequency counts. To prevent outlets with sparse text content for a year from distorting aggregate frequency counts, we only include outlet frequency counts from years for which there is at least 1 million words of article content from an outlet. This threshold was chosen to maximize inclusion in our analysis of outlets with sparse amounts of articles text per year. </p> <p>Yearly frequency usage of a target word in an outlet in any given year was estimated by dividing the total number of occurrences of the target word in all articles of a given year by the number of all words in all articles of that year. This method of estimating frequency accounts for variable volume of total article output over time.</p> <p>In a small percentage of articles, outlet specific XPath expressions might fail to properly capture the content of the article due to the heterogeneity of HTML elements and CSS styling combinations with which articles text content is arranged in outlets online domains. As a result, the total and target word counts metrics for a small subset of articles are not precise. In a random sample of articles and outlets, manual estimation of target words counts overlapped with the automatically derived counts for over 90% of the articles.</p> <p>Most of the incorrect frequency counts are often minor deviations from the actual counts such as for instance counting the word "Facebook" in an article footnote encouraging article readers to follow the journalist’s Facebook profile and that the XPath expression mistakenly included as the content of the article main text.To conclude, in a data analysis of over 16 million articles, we cannot manually check the correctness of frequency counts for every single article and hundred percent accuracy at capturing articles’ content is elusive due to the small number of difficult to detect boundary cases such as incorrect HTML markup syntax in online domains. Overall however, we are confident that our frequency metrics are representative of word prevalence in print news media content (see Figure 2 of main manuscript for supporting evidence of the temporal precision of the method).</p>

<p>This resource is the printable version of the Spatial Justice Benchmarking Tool evaluation board.</p> <p>The Spatial Justice Benchmarking Tool (SJBT) is a qualitative evaluation tool designed to measure the application of justice considerations in urban governance and planning of a city or region, assisting evaluation and reflection. It defines "levels of justice", from "Low" to "Embedded", by assigning a score of the attainment of what is being assessed against the highlighted components of the Spatial Justice Conceptual Model. </p> <p>The tool serves to spark discussion and reflection based on Spatial Justice considerations. Using this lens, it is possible to pay greater attention to aspects that redistribute benefits and burdens, engage people and be more responsive in policy and decision-making processes, and recognise the needs and aspirations of disadvantaged individuals, groups, and communities.</p>

Supplementary material: for Using anticipation to unveil drivers of local livelihoods in Transfrontier Conservation Areas: a call for more environmental justice
<ol> <li> <span>Calling on the concept of environmental justice in its </span><span>distributive, procedural, and recognition</span><span> dimensions, </span><span>w</span><span>e implemented a collaborative scenario-building approach to explore sustainable livelihood pathways in four sites belonging to two Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) in southern Africa. </span> </li> <li><span>Grounded on participation and transdisciplinarity, as a foundation for decolonised anticipatory action research, we aimed at stimulating knowledge exchange and providing insights on the future of local livelihoods by engaging experts living within these TFCAs. </span></li> <li><span>Our results show that wildlife and wildlife-related activities are not seen as the primary drivers of local livelihoods, despite the focus and investments of dominant stakeholders in these sectors. Instead, local governance and land use regulations emerged as key drivers in the four study sites. The state of natural resources, including water, and appropriate farming systems also appeared critical to sustain future livelihoods in TFCAs, together with the recognition of indigenous culture, knowledge, and value systems.</span></li> <li><span>Nature conservation, especially in Africa, is rooted in its colonial past and struggles to free or decolonise itself from the habits of this past despite decades of reconsideration. To date, the enduring coloniality of conservation prevents local citizens from truly participating in the planning and designing of the TFCAs they live in, leaving room for limited benefits to local citizens and often limiting indigenous people's capacity to conserve. </span></li> <li> <span>A practical way forward is to consider environmental justice as a cement between the two pillars of the TFCA concept, i.e.</span><span>nature conservation and socioeconomic development of local or neighbouring communities,</span><span> as part of a more broad and urgent need to rethink the relationships between people in, and with, the rest of nature.</span> </li> </ol>

Château de Montlivault: the Court of Justice
XVI century old building. First inside-outside scan of a building. The Lords of Montlivault held a Court of Justice in this small building, hence the name of the street. They worked under the committee and bailliff in nearby Blois and had the right to administer "low justice" (matters related to the rights of the lord); "middle justice" (brawls, injury, and theft not punishable by death); and "hight justice" (any matter leading up to the capital punishment). trials were held in this chamber located at the edge of the Château's park, wuth an entrance on the outside and another private entry for the Lord on the inside.  📍 [Montlivault, Centre Region, France](https://scaniver.se/L47.63947,1.44438) Scanned with the iPhone12 Pro and Scaniverse.
