Data from: The 2018 European heatwave led to stem dehydration but not to consistent growth reductions in forests
<p>Heatwaves exert disproportionately strong and sometimes irreversible impacts on forest ecosystems. These impacts remain poorly understood at the tree and species level and across large spatial scales. Here, we investigate the effects of the record-breaking 2018 European heatwave on tree growth and tree water status using a collection of high-temporal resolution dendrometer data from 21 species across 53 sites. Relative to the two preceding years, annual stem growth was not consistently reduced by the 2018 heatwave but stems experienced twice the temporary shrinkage due to depletion of water reserves. Conifer species were less capable of rehydrating overnight than broadleaves across gradients of soil and atmospheric drought, suggesting less resilience toward transient stress. In particular, Norway spruce and Scots pine experienced extensive stem dehydration. Our high-resolution dendrometer network was suitable to disentangle the effects of a severe heatwave on tree growth and desiccation at large-spatial scales in situ, and provided insights on which species may be more vulnerable to climate extremes.</p>
Cytoplasmic components of the machinery mediating telomere-led rapid chromosome movements in mouse meiosis
<p>Telomere-led rapid chromosome movements (RPMs) are a prominent characteristic of chromosome dynamics during meiosis. Although of crucial importance in maintaining germ cell integrity, the extranuclear portion of the machinery supporting RPMs in mammals is poorly understood. Using an unbiased proteomic approach to identify motor proteins associated to microtubules in mouse meiotic cells, complemented with co-immunoprecipitation confirmation, we uncovered kinesins as candidate of the machinery mediating RPMs in mouse spermatocytes. Further biochemical, microscopy, and functional analysis shows that KIF5B and KIF2B interact with KASH5 and act as motor proteins mediating the LINC complex-microtubule interactions. Our results show that member of the kinesin family of molecular motors act as novel critical modules of the machinery promoting complex dynamic chromosomes in mammals.</p>
A practice-led assessment of landscape restoration potential in a biodiversity hotspot
<p>Effective restoration planning tools are needed to mitigate global carbon and biodiversity crises. Published spatial assessments of restoration potential are often at large scales or coarse resolutions inappropriate for local action. Using a Tanzanian case study, we introduce a systematic approach to inform landscape restoration planning, estimating spatial variation in cost-effectiveness, based on restoration method, logistics, biomass modelling and uncertainty mapping. We found potential for biomass recovery across 77.7% of a 53,000 km<sup>2</sup> region, but with some natural spatial discontinuity in moist forest biomass, that was previously assigned to human causes. Most areas with biomass deficit (80.5%) were restorable through passive or assisted natural regeneration. However, cumulative biomass gains from planting outweighed initially high implementation costs meaning that, where applicable, this method yielded greater long-term returns on investment. Accounting for ecological, funding and other uncertainty, the top 25% consistently cost-effective sites were within protected areas and/or moderately degraded moist forest and savanna. Agro-ecological mosaics had high biomass deficit but little cost-effective restoration potential. Socio-economic research will be needed to inform action towards environmental and human development goals in these areas. Our results highlight value in long-term landscape restoration investments and separate treatment of savannas and forests. Furthermore, they contradict previously asserted low restoration potential in East Africa, emphasising the importance of our regional approach for identifying restoration opportunities across the tropics.</p>

Mapping the Swiss Landscape of Diamond Open Access Journals. The PLATO Study on Scholar-Led Publishing. Dataset
<p><strong>Context</strong><br> From March to September 2022, the <a href="https://www.openscience.uzh.ch/en/openaccess/plato.html">«Platinum Open Access Funding» Project (PLATO)</a>, in collaboration with the Institute for Applied Data Science & Finance at the Bern University of Applied Sciences, undertook a bibliometric and empirical study of the Platinum/Diamond open access journal landscape in Switzerland. The PLATO project is an initiative of six Swiss universities – the University of Zurich, the University of Bern, the University of Geneva, the University of Neuchâtel, the Zurich University of the Arts and ETH Zurich –, dedicated to furthering community-led scholarly publishing in Switzerland. Diamond open access stands for a concept of equitable open access to and participation in scholarly publishing that is free for both authors and readers.</p> <p><strong>Presentation</strong><br> The main objective of the PLATO Study was to gain insight into the Platinum/Diamond open access publishing ecosystem in Switzerland through a mixed-method approach. The study consisted of three parts: First, bibliometric data were combined with inputs from Swiss open access publishers, institutional open access experts as well as information on journal websites to identify Swiss Diamond OA journals and their main characteristics. Second, seven semi-structured interviews with editors of select Diamond OA journals were conducted to generate a thorough understanding of their workflows, infrastructures, business models, challenges and opportunities. Low-cost test rig for characterization of photocatalytic two dimensional materials using photonically sized UV-A LED light sources
<p>In the presented studies, a system for the characterization of two-dimensional photocatalysts was developed and tested. In the system, reference substances can be studied online with regard to their degradability and adsorption on photocatalytic materials. In order to perform accurate calculations of the quantum and photon efficiency of the catalysts, the LED arrays used were adjusted in their spacing by simulations so that a homogeneous light field is imaged on the catalysts. The system was tested with respect to measurement accuracy and reproducibility and the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, methyl orange and rhodamine B was investigated. Exemplarily, the reaction kinetics, photolysis and adsorption on the tested photocatalysts were determined for these compounds and the calculation was presented in detail. The exact construction plans and circuits as well as the sensors and their programming are presented in detail and should encourage other scientists to replicate the experimental setup, since especially in the field of photocatalysis research, often the results of publications cannot be compared with each other.</p>

Semi-quantitative microcystin concentration measured in surface water samples collected by the Citizen-Led Environmental Observatory (CLEO) from multiple nearshore sites in Lake Lillinonah, Connecticut, USA, 2015-2018
Included in this data package are cyanobacterial toxin data from the Citizen-Led Environmental Observatory (CLEO), a volunteer water quality monitoring program run by Friends of the Lake (FOTL, friendsofthelake.org) and Fairfield University at Lake Lillinonah, Connecticut, USA. The program has been operational since 2008 (toxin data available form 2015-2018). Trained volunteer monitors collect routine surface water samples from multiple nearshore sites twice a month from Memorial Day through Labor Day. In addition, spot samples are taken whenever a significant algae bloom is present at the collection site. These samples are analyzed for microcystin concentrations. Routine water samples are also analyzed for levels of the total nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations. Additionally, CLEO volunteers collect data on water temperature, Secchi disk depth, water color, presence of floating woody debris, recreation potential, trash, particle type and surface scum every 1-3 days during the same period. These data are available in EDI packages EDI567 (general water quality) and EDI568 (nutrients).
