Changes in sugar-sweetened beverage consumption in the first two years (2018 – 2020) of San Francisco's tax: A prospective longitudinal study
<p><strong>Background:</strong> Sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) taxes are a promising strategy to decrease SSB consumption, and their inequitable health impacts, while raising revenue to meet social objectives. In 2016, San Francisco passed a one cent per ounce tax on SSBs. This study compared SSB consumption in San Francisco to that in San José, before and after tax implementation in 2018.</p> <p><strong>Methods & findings</strong>: A longitudinal panel of adults (n = 1,443) was surveyed from zip codes in San Francisco and San José, CA with higher densities of Black and Latino residents, racial/ethnic groups with higher SSB consumption in California. SSB consumption was measured at baseline (11/17–1/18), one (11/18–1/19), and two years (11/19-1/20) after the SSB tax was implemented in January 2018. Average daily SSB consumption (in ounces) was ascertained using the BevQ-15 instrument and modeled as both continuous and binary (high consumption: ≥6 oz (178 ml) versus low consumption: <6 oz) daily beverage intake measures. Weighted generalized linear models (GLMs) estimated difference-in-differences of SSB consumption between cities by including variables for year, city, and their interaction, adjusting for demographics and sampling source. In San Francisco, average SSB consumption in the sample declined by 34.1% (-3.68 oz, p = 0.004) from baseline to 2 years post-tax, versus San José which declined 16.5% by 2 years post-tax (-1.29 oz, p = 0.157), a non-significant difference-in-differences (-17.6%, adjusted AMR = 0.79, p = 0.224). The probability of high SSB intake in San Francisco declined significantly more than in San José from baseline to 2-years post-tax (AOR[interaction] = 0.49, p = 0.031). The difference-in-differences of odds of high consumption, examining the interaction between cities, time and poverty, was far greater (AOR[city*year 2*federal poverty level] = 0.12, p = 0.010) among those living below 200% of the federal poverty level 2-years post-tax.</p> <p><strong> Conclusions:</strong> Average SSB intake declined significantly in San Francisco post-tax, but the difference in differences between cities over time did not vary significantly. Likelihood of high SSB intake declined significantly more in San Francisco by year 2 and more so among low-income respondents.</p>

Positive mental health among sports coaches: A six-month longitudinal study
<p><span>Positive mental health is important for sports coaches to keep functioning well over time, but little is known about its longitudinal stability</span><span>. </span><span>Consequently, this study examined </span><span>stability and change of emotional, psychological, and social well-being in a sample of 422 sports coaches </span><span>(<em>M<sub>age</sub></em> = 44.48, <em>SD</em> = 11.03) in terms of measurement invariance, rank-order stability, mean-level change, stability of interindividual differences, and structural stability. Participants completed measures of emotional, psychological, and social well-being at baseline and again at three and six months. Multiple perspectives of stability and change were examined using structural equation modeling. The results confirm that the measure of positive mental health functions equivalently over time. Stability of well-being remained high, with rank-order stability coefficients ranging from .67 to .79 at three and six months, and no mean-level change in well-being was observed. The results also indicate stable interindividual differences and structural stability of positive mental health over time. These results confirm the importance of addressing any symptoms of diminished positive mental health in the coaching population.</span></p>

The Olympic gold medalists and Instagram - A longitudinal study on user characteristics
<p>This dataset includes Instagram user characteristics of those Olympic athletes who won gold medals in the individual events of Rio2016. The name of all these gold medalists of individual events are in the dataset (226 athletes), however only 144 athletes (83 men and 61 women) had a publicly available Instagram account in all of the observations during the 4 months period of data gathering. The first round of data gathering (first observation, i.e. OlympicAthletesData_1) took place 9-Aug-2019 to 12-Aug-2019, the second round of data gathering (second observation, i.e. OlympicAthletesData_2) took place 9-Sep-2019 to 12-Sep-2019, the third round of data gathering (third observation, i.e. OlympicAthletesData_3) took place 9-Oct-2019 to 12-Oct-2019, the fourth round of data gathering (fourth observation, i.e. OlympicAthletesData_4) took place 9-Nov-2019 to 12-Nov-2019. Healthy lifestyle and the risk of Alzheimer's dementia: Findings from two longitudinal studies
<p><strong>Objective</strong><br> To quantify the impact of a healthy lifestyle on the risk of Alzheimer's dementia.</p> <p><strong>Methods</strong><br> Using data from the Chicago Health and Aging Project (CHAP n=1,845) and the Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP n=920), we defined a healthy lifestyle score on the basis of non-smoking, >=150 min/week moderate/vigorous intensity physical activity, light-to-moderate alcohol consumption, high-quality MIND diet (upper 40%), and engagement in late-life cognitive activities (upper 40%), giving an overall score ranging from 0 to 5. Cox proportional hazard models were used for each cohort to estimate the hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) of the lifestyle score with Alzheimer's dementia and a random effect meta-analysis was used to pool the results.</p> <p><strong>Results</strong><br> During a median follow-up of 5.8 years in CHAP and 6.0 years in MAP, 379 and 229 participants, respectively had incident Alzheimer's dementia. In multivariable-adjusted models, the pooled HR (95%CI) of Alzheimer's dementia across two cohorts was 0.73 (95%CI, 0.66-0.80) per each additional healthy lifestyle factor. Compared to participants with 0-1 healthy lifestyle factor, the risk of Alzheimer's dementia was 37% lower (pooled HR 0.63; 95%CI, 0.47-0.84) in those with 2-3 healthy lifestyle factors, and 60% lower (pooled HR 0.40; 95%CI, 0.28-0.56) in those with 4-5 healthy lifestyle factors. </p> <p><strong>Conclusion</strong><br> A healthy lifestyle as a composite score is associated with a substantially lower risk of Alzheimer's dementia.</p>
Exploratory analysis using machine learning of predictive factors for falls in persons with type 2 diabetes: A Longitudinal Study
<p>The risk of falls in elderly individuals with diabetes was reported to be 1.5 - 3 times higher than in those without diabetes. However, it is not clear what risk factors are strongly related to falls in those with diabetes. In this study, we aimed to investigate the status of falls and to identify important risk factors for falls in persons with type 2 diabetes (T2D) including the non-elderly. Participants were 316 persons with T2D who were admitted to the University of Tsukuba Hospital for treatment of diabetes. They were assessed for medical history, laboratory data and physical capabilities during the hospitalization and were given a questionnaire on falls one year after discharge. Two different statistical models, logistic regression and random forest classifier, were used to investigate important predictors of falls. The response rate to the survey was 72%; of the 226 respondents, there were 129 males and 97 females (median age 62 years). The fall rate during the first year after discharge was 19% and increased with age; fall rates were 17% for those <60 years, 20% for those aged 60 – 69 years and 24% for those ≥70 years. Logistic regression revealed that knee extension strength (β= -0.698, P = 0.002), fasting C-peptide (F-CPR) level (β= 0.492, P = 0.009) and dorsiflexion strength (β= -0.432, P = 0.047) were independent predictors of falls. The random forest classifier placed knee extension strength (covariate importance = 0.304), grip strength (0.234), F-CPR level (0.232) and dorsiflexion strength (0.230) in the top 4 important variables for falls. The rate of falls in persons with T2D was high even in middle age. Lower extremity muscle weakness as well as elevated F-CPR levels and reduced grip strength were shown to be important risk factors for falls in T2D.</p>

Bone structural data for the Denver Longitudinal Growth Study
<p>Long bone structural dimensions have been shown to be responsive to mechanical loadings during life. Thus, they can be used to track behavioral changes as well as changes in body size during ontogeny. Radiographic measurements of long bone structural properties (lengths, cross-sectional geometric properties, articular breadths) were carried out for a sample of 20 children who had participated in the Denver Growth Study. An average of 36 longitudinal time points for each individual, taken at 6-month intervals between early infancy and late adolescence, were included. Anthropometric and muscle area dimensions were also available. The data have been previously used in a range of studies, including growth changes in bone strength, adaptation to bipedalism, and body size prediction in juveniles. </p>

Sex differences in cognitive aging: a 4-year longitudinal study in marmosets.
<p>Longitudinal studies are essential to understand healthy and pathological neurocognitive aging such as Alzheimer’s Disease, but longitudinal designs are rare in both humans and non-human primate models of aging because of the difficulty of tracking cognitive change in long-lived primates. Common marmosets ( Callithrix jacchus ) are uniquely suited for aging studies due to their naturally short lifespan (10- 12 years), sophisticated cognitive and social abilities and Alzheimer Disease-like neuropathology. We report the first longitudinal study of cognitive aging in marmosets (N=28) as they transitioned from middle- (~ 5 years) to old age (~ 9 years). We characterized aging trajectories using reversal learning with different stimuli each year. Marmosets initially improved on cognitive performance due to practice, but worsened in the final year, suggesting the onset of age-related decline. Cognitive impairment emerged earlier in females than males and was more prominent for discrimination than for reversal learning. Sex differences in cognitive aging could not be explained by differences in motivation or motor abilities, which improved or remained stable across aging. Likewise, males and females did not differ in aging trajectories of overall behavior or reactivity to a social stressor, with the exception of a progressive decline in the initiation of social behavior in females. Patterns of cognitive aging were highly variable across marmosets of both sexes, suggesting the potential for pathological aging for some individuals. Future work will link individual cognitive trajectories to neuropathology in order to better understand the relationships between neuropathologic burden and vulnerability to age-related cognitive decline in each sex.</p>
A longitudinal study of DNA and RNA viruses plasma detection in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplant recipients
<p><span><strong>Background:</strong> </span><span>Viral infections are among the most common complications after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) and can be associated with transient or sustained viremia. Besides viruses that are common causes of infection, metagenomics revealed the presence of several novel viruses and variants that are overlooked in clinical routine and represent potential sources of unrecognized systemic infections</span><span>. Our aim was to describe the prevalence and the dynamics of 17 DNA and 3 RNA viral infections using (r(RT-)PCR) assays on plasma samples of adult allo-HSCT recipients over a one-year period after HSCT.</span></p> <p><strong><span>Methods:</span></strong><span> 109 adult patients that received a first allo-HSCT from 1<sup>st</sup> March 2017 to 31<sup>st</sup> January 2019 we included in this</span> <span>longitudinal observational monocentric cohort study</span><span>.</span> <span>17 DNA and 3 RNA viral species were screened with qualitative and/or quantitative r(RT)-PCR assays performed on plasma samples </span><span>collected at five time-points (day 0 and 30 days, 3 months, 6 months and one year after HSCT). </span></p> <p><strong><span>Results: </span></strong><span>TTV was the most prevalent with an increasing prevalence to 96% of patients at 3 months. HPgV-1 prevalence ranged from 26 to 36% of patients. TTV and HPgV-1 plasma viral load peaked at month 3 (TTV: median 3.29E5 copies/ml [range, 3.37E2 to 4.06E9 copies/ml]; HPgV-1: median 1.18E6 copies/ml [range, 2.61E3 to 4.49E7 copies/ml]). Among <em>Polyomaviridae</em>, BKPyV, JCPyV, MCPyV, HPyV6 and 7 were detected in ≥10% of patients at ≥1 time-point. HPyV6 and HPyV7 prevalence reached 27% and 12% of patients at month 3. Among those, 41% and 63% had quantifiable viral loads, with median viral loads above 1E3copies/ml and results may suggest HPyV6 sustained viremia. Co-detections were frequent, in particular at 3 months with ≥2 viruses detected in 72% of patients. </span></p> <p><strong><span>Conclusion: </span></strong><span>Our study confirms that TTV and HPgV-1 infections are highly prevalent and that infection may be sustained up to one year after allo-HSCT. Our systematic and large strategy of screening also revealed diverse and numerous co-detections, and that several novel <em>Polyomaviridae</em> (MCPyV, HPyV6/7) that are overlooked in clinical routine are as or more frequently detected compared to classical culprits. Our results underscores the need for further studies investigating the clinical impact of classical culprits together with other viruses in particular novel <em>Polyomaviridae</em> and HPgV-1. </span></p>
