Marcell Experimental Forest biweekly surface water and monthly porewater chemistry at Bog Lake Peatland, 2007 - ongoing

This data set reports the chemistry of surface and porewater water from the Bog Lake peatland in the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota, which is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. Surface water has been collected about every other week since 2007 from a pool of water and sampling is ongoing. Once covered with ice, water was typically sampled once a month. Porewaters at five depths (0 to 2 m depths) have been collected about monthly from three different nest of piezometers since 2013, though never when samplers were frozen. Samples are measured for pH, specific conductivity, anions (chloride, sulfate), cations (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, aluminum, iron, manganese, strontium), silicon, nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus, total nitrogen, total phosphorus), and total organic carbon.

Marcell Experimental Forest weekly or biweekly streamwater chemistry at the S1 catchment, 2007 - ongoing

This data set is a record of water chemistry for the stream draining the S1 catchment and bog at the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. Stream water samples were usually collected every one or two weeks since 2007 as part of the long-term monitoring program of the S1 catchment. Some samples were collected weekly as part of the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) project, with monitoring starting during 2011 prior to initiation of experimental warming in that study (during and after 2014). Samples are measured for pH, specific conductivity, anions (chloride, sulfate), cations (calcium, magnesium, potassium, sodium, aluminum, iron, strontium), silicon, nutrients (ammonium, nitrate, soluble reactive phosphorus, total nitrogen, total phosphorus), and total organic carbon. Occasionally, stable water isotopes and concentrations of ferrous and ferric iron have been measured. More values will be added as additional water samples are collected and analyzed (concentrations and isotopes), or archived water samples are analyzed (mostly for stable water isotopes). The MEF is operated and maintained by the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station. The SPRUCE experiment is a multi-year cooperative project among scientists of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory operated by UT-Battelle, LLC and the USDA Forest Service, Northern Research Station, with funding from the US Department of Energy, Biological and Environmental Research Program.

Microbial decomposition of 13-C labeled substrates across a gradient of root density, Marcell Experimental Forest, Minnesota, USA, 2014

Roots influence microbial decomposition of organic matter. We investigated how roots influence decomposition of a simple and complex carbon (C) substrate in mesocosms in a field experiment. Mesocosms were PVC lined with mesh that varied in size, which manipulated root access to soil and produced a gradient of root density. Mesocosms either received an injection of water (control), 13C labeled starch or 13C labeled leaf material. We collected gas samples from the mesocosms and analyzed 13C-CO2, microbial biomass, and enzyme activity. Our empirical data set was compared to a rhizosphere simulation model, CORPSE, to evaluate two alternative model hypotheses: 1) microbes are generalist decomposers, and 2) microbes have different affinities for substrates and may be influenced by roots differently. Our field experiment was conducted in 2014 at Marcell Experimental Forest, MN, USA. We installed mesocosms in May and after six weeks we injected water or substrates into soil. Gas samples were collected 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10, 20, and 40 days after injections. Mesocosms that received the starch substrate were harvested from the field 5 days after injections and those receiving leaf material were harvested 40 days after injections. Half of the water-control mesocosm were harvested 5 and 40 days after injections to pair with the substrate mesocosm harvests. Our results suggested decomposition of leaf material was more sensitive to root density than starch. The CORPSE model simulations with microbe-substrate affinity (hypothesis 2) showed a similar pattern to the field experiment. One way that roots influence microbial decomposition is through alleviating C limitation via exudates. Overall, our results suggest that microbial decomposition of starch is not a C limited process and that root density does not alter the rate of starch decomposition. Marcell Experimental Forest peat core extraction chemical analysis data (DOC, Fe, Ca, Mg, K, P, Al)

This data set reports iron (Fe), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), and aluminum (Al) measured in extractions of soil cores sampled from two boreal peatlands, the S1 and S2 bogs, in the Marcell Experimental Forest (MEF) in Itasca County, Minnesota. The soil cores were sampled on September 2, 2017. Elements were quantified in extractions with hydrochloric acid, sodium dithionite, sodium sulfate, and sodium dithionite plus hydrochloric acid to examine how iron influences carbon and nutrient cycling in peatlands. The S1 and S2 sites are research catchments instrumented for hydrologic monitoring. The S1 bog is also the location of the Spruce and Peatland Responses Under Changing Environments (SPRUCE) experiment. These data are used, analyzed, and reported in Curtinrich et al. (2021, Ecosystems).

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office.
