Soil hydraulic and thermal properties determined in surface organic and mineral soils in the region near Toolik Lake on the North Slope of Alaska, 2016-2019
Soil cores of 5 cm diameter down to frozen soil were taken from a subset of sample sites for laboratory analysis. Determinations of hydraulic conductivity, thermal conductivity, porosity, and bulk density were made for each core. For a further subset of sites we developed soil moisture retention curves.
Tree regeneration after fire: Yukon Lodgepole Pine Surveys, mineral soil analysis
This dataset documents pre- and post-fire tree composition of stands along the current range edge of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta ssp. latifolia) in the Yukon Territory. The objective of the study was to evaluate whether pine populations at the range edge appear to be expanding in association with fire disturbance. This dataset has been published as: Jill F. Johnstone and F. Stuart Chapin, 2003. Non-equilibrium succession dynamics indicate continued northern migration of lodgepole pine. Global Change Biology, 9(10): 1401-1409.
Survey of Aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella) Oviposition Per Leaf Sampled in Interior Alaska Aspen Stands near Fairbanks from 2004 to 2022
The datasets contains annual counts of aspen leaf miner eggs, incipient mines, and egg scars (indicating egg predation) on aspen leaves over time. There are two files representing pilot data from 2004-2005 and data 2006-2022. The 2004-05 dataset does not include egg scars, indicaitive of egg removal, and therefore totals underestimate total oviposition. The 2006-2022 dataset does include egg scars and therefore can be used to estimate total oviposition per leaf.

This dataset addresses the effects of epidermal leaf mining by the aspen leaf miner (Phyllocnistis populiella) on the physiology and water relations of aspen leaves. The dataset contains measurements of gas exchange, water potential, water content, and delta13C of aspen leaves manipulated to bear leaf mining damage on the top (adaxial) leaf surface only, the bottom (abaxial) leaf surface only, or no mining damage.
Fire Self-Limitation (FiSL) Experiment: Quantifying Wildfire Carbon Combustion Losses in boreal Deciduous and Mixed Forests in Interior Alaska and the Boreal Cordillera VI: Mineral Soil Sample and pH Data 2022
This dataset contains field- and lab-measured characteristics for post-fire mineral soil samples collected in the field for plots in 8 fire scars in Interior Alaska and the Yukon. Data was collected in the summer of 2022. Fire scars sampled included Shovel Creek (2019), Aggie Creek (2015), Hess Creek (2019), Baker (2015), Munson Creek (2021), Isom Creek (2020), 2019MA014 (2019), and 2019BC005 (2019). Lab analyses were conducted in fall of 2022 at NAU.
Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE): Net N mineralization at Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, Bartlett Experimental Forest and Jeffers Brook, central NH USA, 2009 - 2017
The Multiple Element Limitation in Northern Hardwood Ecosystems (MELNHE) project studies N and P acquisition and limitation through a series of nutrient manipulations in northern hardwood forests. This data set includes net N mineralization measured in Oe, Oa, and mineral soil horizons in all 13 of the MELNHE study sites. Samples are collected every several years, beginning with pretreatment (2008 and 2009) through 2017, representing 3 years of N and P fertilization. Additional detail on the MELNHE project, including a datatable of site descriptions and a pdf file with the project description and diagram of plot configuration can be found in this data package: https://portal.edirepository.org/nis/mapbrowse?scope=knb-lter-hbr&identifier=344 These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). <p>The data repository contains data obtained with the microscope Nikon Eclipse LV100ND that was stitched with <a href="https://imagej.net/plugins/trakem2/">TrakEM2 software</a>. The files allow reproducing the results obtained and plot in <a href="https://doi.org/10.1111/jmi.13284">Acevedo et al. (2024)</a> <strong>"Using the traditional microscope for mineral grain orientation determination: A prototype image analysis pipeline for optic-axis mapping (POAM)."</strong> by Acevedo Zamora, M. A., Schrank, C. E., & Kamber, B. S.</p> <p>The prototype uses MatLab scripts (<a href="https://github.com/marcoaaz/AcevedoEtAl._2024a_POAM">AcevedoEtAl._2024a_POAM</a>) that were documented in the paper Supplementary Material 1. The metadata can be found in Supplementary Material 3 and follows the structure of this data repository. The Effects of Plant-Microbe-Environment Interactions on Mineral Weathering Patterns in a Granular Basalt
<p>Data used in the Milici et al. <em>Geobiology </em>article "The Effects of Plant-Microbe-Environment Interactions on Mineral Weathering in Granular Basalt". The data result from a greenhouse experiment in which 14 genotypes of Alfalfa <em>(Medicago</em> sativa) were grown in an unweathered granular basaltic tephra, exposed to an early successional soil microbial community, and replicated across three different soil moisture treatments. This experiment seeks to identify the roles of vascular plants and soil microbes on mineral weathering. Please see the article for full project description. </p> <p>General File Descriptions:</p> <p>"AllPerformanceGeochem.csv" contains both the performance and geochemistry data associated with each plant grown in the experiment and is used for the majority of the analyses.</p> <p>"FullCensusTimeSeries.csv" contains the growth and survival data for the plants across the entire 3 month duration of the experiment and is used only to calculate survival rate and growth rate.</p> <p>"pottingsoilmass.csv" contains the data for alfalfa grown in potting soil and is used to compare how much the basalt limited plant growth relative to a potting soil control. </p> <p>These data are cleaned and formatted for analysis via the code in the github repository linked to this data repository. </p> <p> </p>
Correlation Between Insulation Resistance and Temperature Measurement Error in Type K and Type N Mineral Insulated, Metal Sheathed Thermocouples
<p>Mineral insulated, metal sheathed (MI) Type K and Type N thermocouples are<br> widely used in industry for process monitoring and control. One factor that limits<br> their accuracy is the dramatic decrease in the insulation resistance at temperatures<br> above about 600 °C which results in temperature measurement errors due to electrical<br> shunting. In this work the insulation resistance of a cohort of representative MI<br> thermocouples was characterised at temperatures up to 1160 °C, with simultaneous<br> measurements of the error in indicated temperature by in situ comparison with a reference<br> Type R thermocouple. Intriguingly, there appears to be a systematic relationship<br> between the insulation resistance and the error in the indicated temperature. At<br> a given temperature, as the insulation resistance decreases, there is a corresponding<br> increasingly negative error in the temperature measurement. Although the measurements<br> have a relatively large uncertainty (up to about 1 °C in temperature error and<br> up to about 10 % in insulation resistance measurement), the trend is apparent at all<br> temperatures above 600 °C, which suggests that it is real. Furthermore, the correlation<br> disappears at temperatures below about 600 °C, which is consistent with the<br> well-established diminution of insulation resistance breakdown effects below that<br> temperature. This raises the intriguing possibility of using the as-new MI thermocouple<br> calibration as an indicator of insulation resistance breakdown: large deviations<br> of the electromotive force (emf) in the negative direction could indicate a correspondingly<br> low insulation resistance.</p>
Mineral composition data for oxidized metasedimentary rocks of the Aegean region
<p>Mineral compositions determined using electron-probe microanalysis (EPMA) for oxidized metasedimentary rocks from the islands of Andros, Crete, Naxos, and Tinos, Aegean region, Greece. The analyses were done using the JEOL JXA-8530F field-emission gun EPMA in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Yale University. Mineral composition results are tabulated as follows. Table 1: Fe-Ti oxides; Table 2: Garnet; Table 3: Epidote; Table 4: Amphibole; Table 5: Clinopyroxene; and Table 6: Phengite. The general analytical and formula calculation procedures are described in Ague et al. (2022; see References).</p>

The Global Distribution, Formation, and Fate of Mineral-Associated Soil Organic Matter Under a Changing Climate – A Trait-Based Perspective. <em>Functional Ecology, </em>2022.</p> <p>We leveraged data from a global synthesis of soil fractionation measurements (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.5987415). For this review article, we specifically focused on measurements of bulk and mineral-associated soil organic carbon concentrations (reported in units of gC/kg soil) and the proportion of bulk soil organic carbon that is mineral-associated (reported as a %). This subset also includes auxiliary data regarding climate and biome characteristics extracted from the synthesized papers; for more variables, see the original full dataset. Köppen-Geiger climate zones were extracted from a georeferenced global database (using R package 'kgc' v1.0.0.2) with site coordinates, where available. Three files are provided in this repository: (1) data file, (2) metadata file, and (3) code for manuscript figures and summary statistics.</p>
Detrital Carbonate Minerals in Earth's Element Cycles (Data & Scripts)
<p>Earth surface conditions, including climate and sea level, are largely controlled by the cycling of carbon and biogeochemically coupled elements. However, most elemental budgets cannot be consentaneously balanced for the present state. Here, we investigate the possible role of riverine carbonate minerals in biogeochemical cycles. We derive individual river basin export fluxes, the global export flux to the ocean and its reduction by human influence, utilizing state-of-the-art regression techniques and published global-scale datasets. Map of Tigray's mineral resources (north Ethiopia) - Canadian and other international mining licences
<p>In Tigray, artisanal mining of gold in the low-lying areas with outcropping Precambrian rocks is one of the major off-farm income sources. The 17<sup>th</sup> C. Portuguese traveller Barradas had already mentioned gold production in Tembien. Rural youth seasonally migrate to inhospitable lowlands and gorges such as the largely uninhabited Weri’i River valley, to search for placer gold, washed out from weathered gold-containing quartz veins within the meta-sediments and meta-volcanics. In recent decades, large-scale gold exploration and mining of gold deposits has been carried out in various parts of Tigray by local (such as the Ezana Mining Development P.L.C.) and several foreign exploration companies particularly from Canada. Recently, The Ethiopia Cable exposed links between big Canadian mining interests and a renewed PR campaign (involving Canadian professor and lobbyist Ann Fitz-Gerald) to whitewash the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments. Earlier on, it had already been suggested that one of the reasons for the Canadian government being very late in officially addressing the atrocities in the ongoing Tigray war, might be related to the country’s mining interests in Tigray.</p> <p>Here we contextualise Tigray’s gold and base metal resources, and present a map of active and applied mineral exploration and mining licenses in Tigray. The largest exploration license areas are concessions of Canadian companies, followed by the U.S. and the United Kingdom.</p>

Global stocks and capacity of mineral-associated soil organic carbon. <em>Nature Communications</em>, 2022.</p> <p>We leveraged data from a global synthesis of soil fractionation measurements (DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.5987415) along with ancillary data on climate, vegetation, and soil characteristics to produce spatially-explicit global estimates of mineral-associated soil organic carbon stocks (MOC) and mineralogical carbon capacity (MOC<sub>max</sub>) in non-permafrost, non-desert mineral soils. Globally-gridded datasets are given in kgC/m<sup>2</sup> for topsoil (0-30cm) and subsoil (30-100cm) at 0.5 degree by 0.5 degree spatial resolution.</p>

Global stocks and capacity of mineral-associated soil organic carbon. <em>Nature Communications</em>, 2022.</p> <p>We performed an observational synthesis of soil fractionation data constituting 1,144 globally-distributed soil profiles from 78 studies that reported fractionation and bulk measurements of organic carbon across depths. This dataset includes measurements of mineral-associated, particulate, and bulk soil organic carbon, as well as ancillary data on edaphic, climate, and vegetation characteristics. We also performed a separate observational synthesis of soil carbon accrual from manipulation and chronosequence studies, which included changes in carbon stocks or concentrations, bulk density, experimental duration, and edaphic properties. This latter synthesis included 103 observations from 34 studies that spanned crop, pasture, grassland, and forest ecosystems across climates and soil types. Further details for both syntheses can be found in the methods and supplementary materials of the associated manuscript.</p>
Datasets of titrations of mineral water hardness monitored using SERS
<p>These datasets contains the spectral information used in a publication regarding the implementation of complexometric titrations of water hardness monitored using Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS).</p> <p>The data consists of two csv files with semi-column separators.</p> <p><em>« MD150 to 155_Master_df_638_corrected_mod_v02.csv »</em> and <em>« MD150 to 155_Master_df_785_corrected_mod_v02.csv »</em> correspond to spectral data acquired under 638 and 785 nm irradiation respectively.</p> <p>The data are organised as row vectors.</p> <p>Each dataset has 432 rows corresponding to 3 water samples (Evian, Volvic, Contrex), 3 replicate titration series + 1 blank titration per batch of NPs, 2 batches of NPs and 18 titration steps per titration series: .</p> <p>The row vectors consist of a first sub-vector of spectral descriptors (identity of spectra, identity and composition of measurement samples and conditions of spectral acquisition), followed by a sub-vector of baseline-substracted spectral intensities.</p> <p>In both datasets, the first 14 columns consists of the spectral descriptors.</p> <p>In the <em>« MD150 to 155_Master_df_638_corrected_mod_v02.csv » </em>dataset, the spectra section consists of 1010 columns which names are the values of the Raman shifts at which the intensities have been recorded.</p> <p>In the <em>« MD150 to 155_Master_df_785_corrected_mod_v02.csv »</em> dataset, the spectra section consists of 1746 columns which names are the values of the Raman shifts at which the intensities have been recorded.</p>

<p>This is the publicly accessible dataset reporting concentrations of thirteen analyzed minerals from hair using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and relevant metadata from treponeme-associated hoof disease in Pacific Northwest elk. The data presented here were analyzed for the manuscript entitled "Associations between hair trace mineral concentrations and the occurrence of treponeme-associated hoof disease in elk (<em>Cervus canadensis</em>)."</p> <p>Please note that reported mineral concentrations are in their adjusted values and raw forms represented by the column name having ".Raw", (e.g., "Selenium" versus "Selenium.Raw").
