Tree Census Data of Tropical Dry Forest Succession in Permanent Plots at Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica (1999–2004), Organization for Tropical Studies (OTS)

This data package contains tree census data from eight permanent forest plots established in 1999 across four successional sites within the tropical dry forest of Palo Verde National Park, Guanacaste, Costa Rica (10°21’N, 85°21’W). The plots were established to study forest structure, composition, and successional dynamics under different disturbance histories in the lowland dry forest ecosystem of northwestern Costa Rica. Each site represents a distinct successional stage, ranging from an early grass-dominated field (Jaragua) to an older partially disturbed remnant forest stand (Varillal). Two permanent 50×50 m plots were established at each site and subdivided into 10×10 m subplots. All woody stems with diameter at breast height (DBH) ≥ 10 cm were tagged, identified to species, and spatially referenced using X–Y coordinates within each plot. For multi-stemmed individuals, all stems meeting the diameter threshold were measured separately. Tree diameter, condition, and taxonomic identification were recorded during four measurement campaigns in 1999, 2001, 2002, and 2004. The dataset includes species identity, DBH, measurement year, individual condition, and subplot coordinates for each stem. These data provide a baseline for understanding forest regeneration, mortality, recruitment, and species composition changes in tropical dry forest succession under varying land-use histories. The dataset represents the historical component of an ongoing long-term monitoring program of forest succession conducted by the Organization for Tropical Studies at Palo Verde National Park, led, developed and supported by Eugenio González since its establishment in 1999.

Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, plant and carbon data, 2023-2024

These data were collected during the 2023-2024 growing season from the Warming and Removal in Mountains (WaRM) Experiment in Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, which was established in 2015. Passive warming was done with open-top chambers, and the invasive dominant species Calluna vulgaris was removed in a factorial design. Two additional treatments were established in 2022: native removal plots with Dracophyllum subulatum removal and uninvaded plots without C. vulgaris. We measured plant biomass, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and carbon fluxes (net ecosystem exchange, gross primary productivity, and ecosystem respiration), using a LI-7500, at three times across the growing season (November, January, and March). The average leaf thickness of each plot was also measured in January. Air temperature, soil moisture, and surface temperature were also included from the 2023-2024 growing season from TMS-4 probes.

This dataset contains site-level average estimated of environmental, soil, tree, vegetation, and fire characteristics measured in 2016, three years after the Toklat River Fire in Denali National Park and Preserve. Measured parameters include latitude, longitude, slope, aspect, elevation, moisture classification, bulk density of the surface soil, residual organic soil depth, thaw depth, burn depth, density and basal area of all tree species pre-fire, the density of all tree species post-fire, estimates of above- and below-ground carbon combustion, and understory vegetation turnover from pre-fire to post-fire. There is also data on seed trap collection and experimental regeneration of seedlings collected in 2017 and 2018 at a subset of sites.

Microbial Sampling from Shark River Slough and Taylor Slough, Everglades National Park, South Florida, USA (FCE LTER), January 2001 - December 2023

We collected monthly observations of water microbial characteristics from each of the FCE LTER sites beginning in February 2001. Bacteria counts using DAPI epifluorescence, heterotrophic bacteria production with tritiated Thymidine uptake, and algal energetics and chl a using the PAM fluorometer were determined from each of the water samples. Bacteria counts in Shark River Slough in the freshwater end of the transect revealed highest bacteria numbers upon marsh rewetting after the dry down. The highest overall count of bacteria was found at the most freshwater point adjacent to the perimeter of the water conservation area but only in March of 2001. Peak numbers of bacteria in the saline end of Shark River transect occurred in December and July. There is some evidence that these higher bacteria numbers in the SR transect are associated with higher salinities. Highest bacteria counts along the Taylor slough transect were observed at the mouth of the Taylor River with peak counts in the wet season in October. Bacteria densities also increased from the eastern to western end of the transect in Florida Bay. Heterotrophic bacterial production did not relate closely bacteria numbers and exhibited highest numbers in the dry season. There was no discernible relationship between salinity and bacteria production as seen in bacteria numbers. Monthly observations using PAM fluorometry revealed that brown algae was the greatest contribution to the algal chal a pool and this relationship was consistent across all FCE LTER sites. Converse to the pattern of bacteria abundance along the Shark River transect, there was evidence that algal biomass decreases from freshwater to estuary. In the Shark River, algal energetics increased from marsh to estuary as well as in the panhandle region of the Taylor River transect. Water Quality Data (Porewater) from the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, January 2001 - ongoing

Porewater samples are collected at Florida Coastal Everglades Long Term Ecological Research (FCE LTER) Program Shark River Slough sites SRS1b (not active), SRS1c (not active), SRS1d, SRS2, and SRS3 within the 1 m^2 aboveground sawgrass nondestructive biomass plots. Airstones connected to Tygon tubing are inserted 10-15 cm below the soil surface. Biannually during the wet season, Monoject 140cc syringes are used to collect at least 80 mL of porewater sample and after collection they are immediately placed in an ice filled cooler. The lab processing of these samples include salinity measurements using a YSI, and filtering the sample through a filter (Whatman GF/F from 2000 to 2017 and Whatman polydisc GW from 2017 to present) . Samples are analyzed for inorganic nutrients such as NO2-,NO3-,NH4+,SRP, and DOC. Dissolved nutrients are measured using standard rapid flow analyzer (RFA) techniques and DOC is quantified on a Shimadzu TOC Analyzer.
