Climate change incidence, risk perception, and food security nexus

<p>This dataset supports the manuscript "Climate change incidence, risk perception, and food security among smallholders in Tigray, Ethiopia". The dataset contains three folders and a file from three data sources: (1) the Ethiopia Rural Socioeconomic Survey (ERSS)/Living Standards Measurement Study-Integrated Surveys on Agriculture (LSMS-ISA), a three-round panel data for Ethiopia, filtered for Tigray region; (2) an ERSS follow-up survey on the beliefs and opinions of respondents on climate change conducted in August 2019 in Tigray; and (3) 4km x 4km monthly grided Climate data (Rainfall, Max &amp; min temperature). The files include socioeconomic data and household features, beliefs and opinions on climate change, and climatological data (monthly rainfall, maximum and minimum temperatures). The dataset covers 34 Enumeration Areas (EA) of the ERSS/LSMS-ISA and represents the region. It can be useful for studies on climate change risk perception and adaptation, environmental protection, and drivers of food insecurity in Tigray, Ethiopia. The data were processed using user-written codes in STATA v.17.</p>

Agroecological farming, flowering phenology and the pollinator-herbivore-parasitoid nexus regulate non-crop plant reproduction

<p>Agroecological farming uses crop and non-crop plant biodiversity to promote beneficial insects supplying pollination and biocontrol services to crops. Non-crop plants (sown or weeds) are integral to supporting these beneficial insect species interactions. How the uplift of biotic complexity by agroecological management (crop diversification, ecological infrastructure) influences mutualistic and antagonistic insect interactions regulating the reproduction of non-crop plants remains less understood. </p> <p>Using a pesticide-free farm-scale (125 ha) agroecological experiment, we tested how the individual reproduction of pollinator-dependent, non-crop plant species with different flowering phenology (<em>Cyanus segetum, Centaurea jacea</em>) and their mutualistic (pollinator) and antagonistic (seed herbivore–parasitoid) insect interactions were affected by agroecological practices. </p> <p>Seed set and species interactions of replicate <em>C. segetum</em> and <em>C. jacea</em> randomly introduced to field margins was correlated with floral resource heterogeneity at focal plant (e.g., flower display size), local community (floral richness/abundance driven by sown wildflower or grass margins), and local landscape (crop diversification, area of semi-natural habitat or mass flowering crops) scales.  </p> <p>At the seasonal peak of non-crop floral diversity and abundance, antagonistic interactions weakly regulated <em>C. segetum</em> seed set with gains from pollinator activity predominating. Conversely, <em>C. jacea</em>, which flowered past the peak of non-crop floral diversity/abundance benefited from the promotion of seed herbivore parasitism and pollinator activity by the local landscape cover of semi-natural habitat and mass flowering crops.</p> <p>Synthesis and applications. Agroecological management produced spatial and-temporal gradients in crop and non-crop floral resources that interacted to modify pollinator or seed herbivore-parasitoid interactions and seed set of <em>Cyanus segetum</em> and <em>Centaurea jacea</em> plants. The degree of phenological overlap between <em>C. segetum</em> and <em>C. jacea</em> flowering and floral resources in the local community or landscape dictated the type and level of exposure to insect interactions influencing reproduction. Design of agroecological practices to deliver pollination and biocontrol services must consider how effects will vary with species traits and the ensemble of mutualistic (pollination) and antagonistic (herbivory, parasitism) interactions governing non-crop plant reproduction. Agroecological management supporting beneficial insect interactions may feedback to help restore functional non-crop plant populations and associated biodiversity, potentially reducing the frequency of management interventions (e.g., re-sowing wildflower strips). </p>

Analysis of the water-power nexus of the Balkan Peninsula power system - results

<p>Power generation sector worldwide accounts for high water withdrawal and consumption due to the hydropower generation and cooling of thermal power plants. Hence, the operation of the power generation sector is constrained by the availability of the water resources, as well as the addition of constrains on water resources used for other purposes, such as irrigation, flood control, water supply, agriculture, etc. The optimal utilization of water resources between the water and energy sector is defined under the term water-energy (or water-power) nexus. This study describes the implementation of hydrological LISFLOOD, Medium-Term Hydrothermal Coordination (DispaSET-MTHC) and Unit Commitment and Dispatch (DispaSET UCD) models for detailed analysis of impacts on the SEE regional power system for three different hydrological years. Results were validated based on the available ENTSO-E data for the average hydrological (2015) year. Moreover, calculations on water withdrawal and consumption for cooling of thermal power plants were added. Addition of water stress index (WSI) calculations can determine locations that could experience water scarcity.</p> <p>This dataset is composed of results of the latter described study.</p> <p>Results are divided into three sets, as results from the first model DispaSET MTHC (MTHC_results_Balkan), second model DispaSET UCD (UCD_results_Balkan) and additional calculations on water consumption and withdrawal for thermal power plant cooling (Water_relazed_results_Balkan).</p>

Examining the oil price and renewable energy price nexus: Comparative wavelet analysis for the aftermath of 2008 financial crisis, shale oil crisis and COVID-19 pandemic.

<p><span>In this study, we conducted a wavelet analysis on the dependence between renewable energy indices and Brent oil index (Brent) for the period of 21st November, 2003 till 24th May, 2024. The objective of the paper includes comparing the co-movement of renewable energy stock prices and oil prices during three different crises including the global financial crisis, shale oil crisis and the covid-19 pandemic. We found that the dependence is similar for both Europe and on a global scale during the pre-crises time, where renewable energy prices lead Brent oil prices in the short and medium term. Furthermore, results confirm that there is substitutability between oil prices and renewable energy prices before all crises which shows a positive correlation. The results further show that the short and medium term dependence disappears after the oil crisis and financial crisis which is supported by the sudden loss in demand for oil. These findings show that co-movement changes between the three crises where there is no dependence between the indices after the financial and oil crisis while there is a negative correlation after the covid-19 pandemic. These findings could have significant ramifications for investors seeking to mitigate risks and for policymakers making decisions about supporting the advancement of renewable energy while understanding the change of behaviour between the two crises.</span></p>

Runoff threshold responses in continental Boreal catchments: Nexus of sub-humid climate, low-relief, surficial geology and land cover

<p>Revision in journal Water Resources Research,Paper # 2023WR034752RR</p> <p>the publication doi:&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://doi.org/10.1029/2023WR034752">doi.org/10.1029/2023WR034752</a></p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>We examined annual runoff from 20 meso-scale catchments over 25 years, to elucidate how interactions between physiography and long-term weather patterns influence the magnitude of spatial-temporal thresholds in annual runoff responses in water-limited, low-relief, glaciated continental Boreal landscapes. Annual runoff ranged over two orders of magnitude (&lt;3 to &gt;300 mm) among catchments receiving similar annual precipitation. Threshold relationships were observed with cumulative regional moisture deficits that reflected spatial-temporal differences in effective storage and antecedent moisture among catchments with differing portions of glacial-deposit and land-cover types. The importance of the glacial-deposit texture and forest-peatland cover on runoff behavior among catchments varied with weather patterns and catchment antecedent moisture states. Dry states yielded low annual runoff that ranged by two orders of magnitude (0 to 80 mm), with higher values in catchments with predominantly coarse-textured deposits. During near normal antecedent moisture, annual runoff remained low (&lt;10 mm) in catchments associated with fine-textured, hummocky landforms and deciduous forests. Annual runoff &gt;10 mm was observed only in catchments with extensive peatlands. Infrequent wet states resulted in increased runoff in all catchments; however, ranges in maximum runoff were associated with heterogeneity in catchment landforms and land covers. Integrating cumulative precipitation with the proportion of glacial-deposit and land-cover types within catchments can: 1) represent water cycling and regional sink-source dynamics controlling runoff, and 2) provide an effective management framework for predicting climate and land-use impacts on regional runoff in water-limited, low-relief, glaciated landscapes such as the Boreal Plain.</p>

Nexus-formatted text file of ISSR band presence/absence for 75 loci in Corallorhiza bentleyi

<p class="MsoNoSpacing">Mycoheterotrophic plants derive most or all carbon and nutrients from fungal partners and represent poorly understood components of forest biodiversity. Many are rare or endangered yet can be ecological indicators of forest ecosystem function due to their often highly specific fungal host requirements. One such species is the IUCN red-listed ('vulnerable'), fully mycoheterotrophic orchid, <i>Corallorhiza bentleyi</i>. This recently described species is among the rarest plants in Appalachia, known from five counties in Virginia and West Virginia, USA. The species has a restricted range, small population size, and is self-pollinating. Here, an integrative approach was taken in conservation genetic assessment of <i>C. bentleyi</i> using floral morphometrics, simple-sequence repeats, and fungal host DNA to characterize variation within and among sampling localities. Morphology reveals some differentiation among individuals from six sampling localities. Surprisingly, most genetic variation is found within localities, contrary to the expectation for a selfing species. Fungal host DNA reveals extreme specificity upon a few genotypes of a single ectomycorrhizal host species, <i>Tomentella fuscocinerea,</i> across all localities. The conservation implications of morphological, genetic, and symbiotic diversity in this vulnerable species are discussed, and additional assessment of conservation status is recommended based on: an obligate reproductive mode of selfing, preventing benefits of outcrossing among genetically non-identical individuals; extreme host specificity, severely restricting niche space; and highly fragmented habitat under threat from anthropogenic disturbance. This study underscores the importance of integrative conservation assessment, analyzing multiple data sources, and reveals patterns not readily apparent from census-based assessments alone.</p>
