Negotiations over offspring care: a test of alternative hypotheses in the clown anemonefish
<p>In species with biparental care, conflict arises over how much each parent provides to their offspring because both benefit from shifting the burden of care to the other. Here, we tested alternative models for how parents negotiate offspring care using a wild population of clownfish (<i>Amphiprion percula</i>). Using 60 breeding groups, we experimentally handicapped parents by fin-clipping the female in 20 groups, the male in 20 groups, and neither parent in 20 groups and measured changes in female, male, and pair combined effort in response to handicapping. First, we found that handicapping resulted in a decrease in the number of eggs laid by fin-clipped females and a decrease in the amount of parental care by fin-clipped males. Second, contrary to predictions, female effort did not change in response to the male being handicapped, or vice versa. Finally, the number of embryos that matured to hatching, an indicator of pair effort, was not influenced by the manipulation, suggesting that although the handicap was effective, clownfish do not face the predicted "cost to conflict" when one parent is handicapped. Together, these results question the generality of current theoretical predictions and expand our understanding of the diverse possible outcomes of parental conflict.</p>
Affordable prices without threatening the oncological R&D pipeline - An economic experiment on transparency in price negotiations
<p>This is the data repository of an economic experiment on the effects of transparency regulations, conducted by the Netherlands Cancer Institute and the University of Amsterdam. We replicated the EU pharmaceutical market in a laboratory setting. In a randomized-controlled study, we analyzed how participants, 400 students located in 4 European countries, negotiated in the current system of Price Secrecy in comparison to innovative bargaining settings where either prices only (Price Transparency) or prices and R&D costs (Full Transparency) were made transparent to buyers.</p>
OPENING SESSION: Shifting paradigms: Turning non-conventional to non-negotiable
<p><em>What are the global systems of industry, manufacture and education which label bamboo and adobe as ’non-conventional’ and concrete and steel as ‘conventional?</em> Are these systems designed for equity and social & environmental justice, or are they perpetuating systems of power which were established in colonial times? Are we encouraging the next generation of decision makers to think about choices of materials and technologies outside of the technical realm, so that they may be a part of the paradigm shift required for transformational change to occur? </p> <p>Search for a definition of non-conventional materials and technologies (NOCMAT), and you are more likely to find 'bamboo and adobe’ than 'concrete and steel’. But if over 90% of global dwellings fall into the NOCMAT category, then why are these materials still considered non-conventional? As we search for low-carbon alternatives for the built environment, NOCMAT is a most promising solution. Perhaps it is time we shift the paradigm and drop the 'non-conventional' label in favour of 'non-negotiable’; our lives on this planet could depend on it. </p> <p>These are the big issues which were explored by NOCMAT’s expert panel during the opening plenary session on 7 June 2022.</p>

Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are deceived by visual illusions during obstacle negotiation
<p>Animals traveling in their natural environment repeatedly encounter obstacles that they can either detour or go through. Gap negotiation requires an accurate estimation of the opening's size to avoid getting stuck or being injured. Research on visual illusions revealed that in some circumstances transformation rules used to generate a three-dimensional representation from bidimensional retinal images fail, leading to systematic errors in perception. In Ebbinghaus and Delboeuf illusions, the presence of task-irrelevant elements causes us to misjudge an object's size. Susceptibility to these illusions was observed in other animals, although with large intraspecific differences. In this study, we investigated whether fish can accurately estimate gap size and whether during this process they may be deceived by illusory patterns. Guppies were extremely accurate in gap negotiation, discriminating holes with a 10% diameter difference. When presented with two identical holes surrounded by inducers to produce Ebbinghaus and Delboeuf patterns, guppies misperceived gap size in the predicted direction. So far, researchers have principally considered illusions as useful tools for exploring the cognitive processing underlying vision. Our findings highlight the possibility that they have important ecological implications, affecting the everyday interactions of an animal with its physical world besides its intra- and interspecific relationships.</p>
